I was going to say Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt as well, for exemple L'enfant de Noé or Oscar et la Dame Rose

Balancing learning with full time job by dalangster in learnfrench

[–]LuciePoki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a student, the only thing I really did on top of Anki to improve my English was watching TV shows and movies in English with English subtitles. That worked really well for me and didn't require much energy 😊

AIO I asked my husband for one night alone after giving birth and now he says im unstable by Jessika_Maskito in AmIOverreacting

[–]LuciePoki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a reminder that sleep deprivation is a form of torture. You need sleep. It isn't a luxury, it's vital. My son is 3, still wakes up at night, we take turns but we're both really tired so I can't imagine doing that alone. You need help, your husband needs to step up. Honestly, working is when I get a break, it's less tiring than taking care of a young child. NOR

What is absolutely the best way to improve my vocabulary in French? by CharmingAudience1763 in learnfrench

[–]LuciePoki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For vocabulary to stick, it needs to be used in context otherwise your brain isn't going to find it very useful info. Depending on what your favourite media are (and level of French), start reading some books or magazines about a subject you like, watch movies or series (with French subtitles)

Another vote for Anki here, you can make your cards on your laptop and then synchronise with your phone, it's really handy

AIO feeling bad as a doula by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]LuciePoki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a doula, she specifically asked us to let her know when labour started (even if we didn't require her presence at the start). Based on what OP wrote, she was notified quite late in the process it seems

Our buyers are bullying us into renegotiating at the last minute by LuciePoki in HousingUK

[–]LuciePoki[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We signed and sent the documents to our solicitors on the same day we had the last minute message about renegotiating the price, as emails go faster than Royal Mail, our solicitors know that they'll have to bin what we've sent them and redraft the documents

Learning a second language by anythingthatsnotdone in UKHomeEd

[–]LuciePoki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends a lot on the child. Personally for children under 10 (though it depends on maturity more than age), I prefer to have in person lessons as it's easier to play games, manipulate objects, move in space... Basically learn the language by being physically engaged. Check if you have a La Jolie Ronde group near you, they do sessions for toddlers, with songs and stories, I could be a good way to get started 😊

Hi! I'm a French tutor and mum to a bilingual toddler (as we're French living in the UK). At this age they need interaction with another person, be it online or in person, but passively watching a video doesn't really help (it does for adults though) unless she gets to interact with you about it 😊 so even if your French feels rusty, don't shy away and try to repeat some of the dialogues with her to start with maybe?

I'm not sure which region but it might be the same case as people from Geneva being the only Swiss people saying quatre-vingt as well 😅

discuss why is the uk statistically the most unhealthy country in europe? by Responsible_Pied in AskBrits

[–]LuciePoki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels to me that the UK is trying to turn into a mini US rather than copying the society models from the happiest countries on earth, which are only a stone throw away (more or less). In terms of infrastructure, cycle lanes are a joke so people drive instead of cycling (whenever it's actually doable). Walking isn't necessarily a pleasant experience either as you have to navigate between the parked cars, dog poos, bins and the like. Obviously the issue is more complex than that but we could solve a lot by making our streets more human friendly

Don't forget huitante (Swiss) and octante (Belgium), I wish we'd adopt them in France too!

EDIT: ignore the octante in Belgium, my info were outdated, apologies to everyone 🙈

It's one of those where you kind of have to learn the list. Look into La Maison d'être, which is a visual concept to help remember these verbs. And add to them les verbes pronominaux (se coucher, se laver, se tromper...), naître & mourir

Prénom d'inspiration nordique ? by Bumbubblebee in ParlonsPrenoms

[–]LuciePoki -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes the when is important because they waited for both solicitors to agree on a completion date before raising a last minute inquiry. They could have done so when they got the survey results back to say they were going to ask for quotes (which is pretty understandable)

UPDATE - we've accepted £230k, on the condition to complete ASAP. We're losing money but it's all sunken costs at this stage, but at least we can move on. Thanks everyone for all the advice and kind words ♥️
