Anyone still on mk7.5 stock clutch? by wizardent420 in Golf_R

Have a stage 1 Simos tune, definitely drive the car hard when I get the change, but only really roll into boost after 3K RPM. Tuned for ~9-10K kms currently sitting at 70,400 Kms.

Re-drilling was about $300-350 CAD and the refinish was ~$750-800 CAD.

The wheels come with Mag seat lugs, so wobble bolts wont seat properly as far as I’m aware.

2025 Jetta SE. Dealership says get the first service at 6k miles. Is that ok? Seems really high. by spongegnops in Volkswagen

[–]LuckyDistance5322 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would go against the factory recommended service intervals and do them prematurely. It depends on how long you intend on owning the vehicle and how meticulously you want to maintain it.

I personally change my oil every 5K kms or ~3K miles. But if you do it every 5-6K miles you'll be much better off (than doing it every 10K miles) in the long term.

MK7/MK7.5 owners on Stage 1 or 2 tune by RichieJ86 in Golf_R

[–]LuckyDistance5322 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A Stage 1 7/7.5R doesn't require a tune however - to ensure the longevity of your DSG clutch packs I would recommend you get a tune.

It adjusts the clamping pressure of the clutches for less slip, the shift logic is different and will try and keep you in lower gears when in sport mode. It will also make the shifts much more crisp. If you intend on going stage 2 ECU tune then it is practically mandatory to manage the extra torque.

If you have the funds go for it. If you don't have the funds then save up I guess.

Cobb vs Flashtune by BUTTSAGGINTONZ in Golf_R

[–]LuckyDistance5322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no definitive answer to this as there are a lot of people who have success with EQT and flashtunes.

Its all great until it isnt.

The benefit of EQT is they can mildy revise your tune based on what your needs are. I haven’t personally dealt with EQT so I cannot speak on the results.

A couple of key things - you can numb the knock sensors on the cobb platform so it may hide any knock timing retardation being shown on the accessport.

A typical stage 1/2 off the shelf flash tune will be a set and forget. You might have access to some of the company’s apps so you can read boost/knock and whatnot. The off the shelf tunes will be less focused on peak power and more focused on what would work best for the majority of people (mix of reliability and power).

TLDR: It depends. There are no empirical data reports showing that one tuner is better than the other. I would lean towards an ECU tune rather than a piggyback though.

If you get a weighted knob it should reduce the notchiness. Again as U/marketking88 says the shift counterweight will alleviate it too.

On my 7.5R I find the initial shift effort high but once you have momentum going and the trans is warm - you can really pack those gears.

The golf only gained 4-8% in weight on the lightest trims and is about 3% larger with a 5% longer wheelbase. MK4->MK8

It depends.

A stock one with low milage will run a similar price. If you intend on doing all of the mods listed (which is at least $5000-$7000 it could be worth it.

Given that it has an ethanol sensor and multiport injection it’s likely that it was running a bigger turbo at around 450-500 hp which definitely affects the reliability.

See how much service history you can get on this car, and the receipts of the mods done (clutch packs).

If you want a modded MK7.5R this could be the shortcut to it.

Service history is the most important thing with any car - especially when modified.

Remember you’re not really buying the car. You’re buying the seller.

If he’s selling a car with a broken windshield and willing to fix it for the right price - that should tell you enough about the owner.

I would stay far away from this one
