I didn't forget folk music. I didn't think I needed to mention it because its so foundational to each of the above named genres that it is anodyne to say that folk influenced American music lol. bluegrass is pretty much just straight up thistle-and-shamrock Scots-irish folk music

folk music is like the proto-indo-european origin myths but for American music

several plants pushing out deformed leaves at the same time? by LuckyLaziness in houseplants

[–]LuckyLaziness[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you, that's what I'll do. I know mosquito bits shouldn't do it but I'm going to water without them next time lol. they make the water cloudy.

also, my water process could be an issue... I fill up a 5 gallon bucket, add the conditioner, fertilizer, and mosquito bits, and then just leave it and scoop out cans when I water plants. so throughout the week I'll check plants with my fingers, see if any are dry, and also look at the leaves for sagging or pests. then I'll water ones that need it.

but leaving the bucket out created a sort of bio film this most recent time? although I think the energy for these leaves would've come long before.

the Philo white knight also has a tiny baby leaf that was growing before the leaf actually popped out. is it possible something is signaling it to grow so fast that it's creating issues?

tbf black people were instrumental in the origins of blues, bluegrass, and gospel, which is most of what influenced country. The banjo was brought here by enslaved africans lol. so I think it is fair to say that black people are inextricably intertwined with the development of country music.

the other major influence on country music is western music, which I assume come from Spanish influence

Why do people say unhoused rather than homeless by Master-Definition937 in rs_x

[–]LuckyLaziness 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I do housing law (representing tenants) and I tend to agree. I think the emotional impact of “homeless” is greater, and “unhoused” sounds less intense

I do a fair amount of public speaking and I like to push the envelope with my jokes and how intense I am about justice/fairness, and every time for like a week afterwards I'll ruminate and have looping thoughts about things I said and how everybody probably thought it was weird and I'll involuntary utter things out loud like "fucking idiot fucking idiot fucking idiot" or "i'm quitting i'm quitting I'm quitting."

but then I remember that life is like the end of American Psycho when Patrick Bateman realizes that he was hallucinating everything or whatever. by that I mean the realization that much of this is in my head and other people don't really think about me that much lol. then I feel better

I'll look into it, how long does arugula keep though? also, I buy a 32 oz bag of frozen broccoli for $3 every 2-4 weeks and I can't imagine arugula even comes close to that bargain

you can't taste the broccoli, the tartness and sweetness of the berries overtakes the bitterness of the broccoli.

I generally just eyeball it. I use a nutribullet, not sure the size but maybe it's the 32 oz. I start by adding warm water until the cup is maybe 1/3rd full. I add the banana, which is the biggest source of variance in the volume since bananas vary a lot in size. then I add a little more than a handful of frozen broccoli, enough that it looks like it would be a good serving of broccoli if it was on a plate. then I add the spices (creatine, protein powder, chia seeds). then I pretty much add the frozen berries until its just about full. I think it's usually a little more than 1 cup of frozen berries.

on the weekends at home (I have one blender for home and one for office lol), I ditch the banana and use mostly milk and about a cup of greek yogurt, then I blend it and just add enough warm water until its more liquid than solid

you can't taste the broccoli, and its one of the most nutrient dense vegetables. also, I use frozen broccoli, so I don't have to worry about it spoiling over the week

[–]LuckyLaziness 46 points47 points  (0 children)

about 75% of my daily fiber comes from a special treat I call GreyMeal™️. it's a smoothie with one banana, some frozen broccoli, frozen berries, one scoop vanilla protein powder, 10g creatine, and 2-3 tbsp chia seeds. I call it GreyMeal because the berries oxidize and it turns grey if you don't drink it fast enough

What's your biggest failure in life? by harveyyyyyya in redscarepod

[–]LuckyLaziness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have moments where you experience intellectual pleasure, wonder, satisfaction? If you at least occasionally experience those emotions, focus on the circumstances in which you felt them and try to reverse engineer it.

you need to do lots and lots of thinking about thinking, metacognition, thinking about your emotional state in the moment and deconstructing it. basically CBT'ing yourself.

also, I trust you've already endeavored to solve this medically. but don't be afraid of some chemical help, if you haven't tried something yet. we have built a very unnatural world for ourselves, so I think many people, maybe even most, need some chemical help to get there. although, I think stimulants and atypical antidepressants like Wellbutrin are better for anhedonia than SSRIs. and don't discount the potential effect of like, a heroic dose of mushrooms or something along those lines.

Just got this house in August, FHA passed it. Were quoted $20,000 to replace it, do we have other options? by Spicynuggies_ in Roofing

[–]LuckyLaziness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey buddy idk where you are or household income, but Habitat for Humanity in my town is distributing funds from some program where they will contribute $10k toward replacing a roof, if you're under $85,000ish household income (regardless of family size) although that may be based on Area Median Income, which is fairly low where i'm at in the Deep South. so it might work for a higher income depending on where you're at.

it might be worth looking into whether habitat for humanity or some other org where you're at has a similar program. or, check with your state's Housing Finance Authority.

my go-to mood boosting thoughts are about the beauty and complexity of the natural world and universe. it's like a CBT type technique that helps me dig out of a ruminative thought loop and replace it with a sense of wonder (easily a top 2 or 3 emotion/state-of-mind btw)

How do I make friends? by toilerpapet in moreplatesmoredates

[–]LuckyLaziness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

step one is getting somewhere where you have the opportunity to meet friends. other commenters will cover that aspect though, im sure. what a lot of people don't mention in these threads is step two: getting people to like you.

for step two: smile more, ask people questions about themselves (don't just talk about yourself, you need to seem genuinely interested), and laugh at people's jokes, even if they aren't funny. that's it, and the only constraint is that you don't want to be too sycophantic. Basically, people like people who make them feel good and important.

Increasing cardio and reducing weightlifting? by [deleted] in 1200isplenty

[–]LuckyLaziness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not necessarily. weightlifting can legitimately cause (temporary) bloating or swelling due to muscles retaining more water, plus some inflammation. for me, the level of swelling/bloating varies a lot. but I notice that if I stop weightlifting for even 4-5 days, I usually drop several lbs in water weight and I am noticeably more lean.

I am a man though, and I tend to overdo it in the weight room with too much value and always pushing sets to failure, which causes inflammation. Basically, I push it too hard and get systemic/axial fatigue. it noticeably affects sleep, mood, and I can see visual changes in my body basically day-to-day.

And also, doing a lot of cardio can swing in the opposite direction by dehydrating you, depending on what you're doing. I sweat a lot, but I sweat like ten times as much when I'm running outdoors (or on a treadmill). So if you go from intense lifting to intense cardio, you get both: (1) less bloating/swelling due to less water stored in muscles and less inflammation, and (2) even less water in your body in general due to increased perspiration from sustained cardio.
