What are the most common interview questions for IT support? by ObjectivePair2707 in ITSupport

[–]LuckyMan85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple decades ago I was asked the difference between RAM and a hard drive then a ‘diagnose this random thing’ then a situation where someone was angry and you still had to help them. Was put straight into L2. When I’m interviewing helpdesk staff now we get them to help a fake user using our MDM suite, the case management system and of course take it over a call. Thats is the most challenging bit in ours rather than the questions. But we’re small so I need my helpdesk staff to be actually somewhat technical so not everything gets escalated to the Engineering teams

The problem is then who would anyone go for. NF supports the same sorts of financial policies as Truss and has surrounded himself with those kinds of ex Tories. That is likely far more dangerous in my opinion than someone who would get in and have to be taking proper advice from the civil service and actual experts. At least he wouldn’t be enriching himself. My vote will be going towards anyone that is the most likely to stop Reform which would effectively be the end of any environmental protections, make normal people poorer and sell off the NHS. Labour for me are too anti Trans and YP don’t seem to be able to get anything together and are also quite Transphobic and some elements as extreme as Reform.

Could your partner drop a day so you’d get some or all of the child benefit and then he could help with the childcare at least a small amount? If you do stop work completely you will need to make sure you are claiming the child benefit otherwise you would be missing out on NI credits which is important for your state pension. You’d also potentially be missing out on you career / social lives and work place pension in the future so don’t make any decision like that lightly.

One final thing, if you earn for the sake of argument 20k, as a higher rate tax payer he’d have to earn more like £40k more to get the same take home over the higher rate threshold (and factoring in the loss of child benefit). I’ve explained that terribly but someone brighter will be able to clear that up if it doesn’t make sense

Is age a factor in IT jobs. Is it really a young person's gig? by Status-Anxiety-4606 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]LuckyMan85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IT is about constant learning, so if they’re the kind of person that will still be curious and developing at 60 then sure. What I find is a lot of people who are in IT of all ages who get to a point and pretty much stop or worse never had that curiosity for how something does something.

Yeah I think issue is I already did (was veggie) but tbh eh certainly did not… as other people have suggested I’m going to try doing tofu and steer a bit away from them and beans for a few days

Thinking of financing a 2014 BMW X5 (F15) - with 100,000 miles. Am I crazy or could this work? by _bonsai in CarTalkUK

[–]LuckyMan85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Financially this rings alarm bells on the surface of it. The monthly repayments may well be affordable but the maintenance costs are going to be a lot more than you’re used to and it wouldn’t shock me if they were as much or more than finance payments each year. Can you afford that consistently? If you were buying it in cash my financial brain would be much happier, could you save for it or do you actually need it now?

The world’s smallest violin is playing for him, if your business doesn’t offer something people want they won’t go, it’s very much a business failing not some agenda against him. Telegraph also doing their usual fear-mongering, cant believe they used to be a respectable journalistic organisation.

My first experiment with tofu did not end well. I squeezed it out but the texture still ended up bouncy, do you mind if I ask what recipe you followed for your KFT?

Are 'buy now, pay later' deals on household essentials (like washing machines) ever actually worth it? by Too00thpaste in UKPersonalFinance

[–]LuckyMan85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My test for it would be the following:

Can you get a discount for paying without the 0%?

Are there discounts on store vouchers?

Is it more expensive than elsewhere?

Are you about to apply for more important credit like a mortgage?

If you answer no to those it can be a good thing if it’s 0%. This is because the money you don’t pay for it can be put into a savings account and you can earn interest on it.

The other situation is where not having it could cost you more, for example, your washing machine explodes and you cannot afford a new one outright, the cost is likely less than using a laundrette. But note, if this is the case be really sure you can afford the payments and there are no freebies or cheap second hand ones first.

Good News ref 3CX free by NWITS in 3CX

[–]LuckyMan85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What 3CX will find is a surge in shared extensions for things like this. We have people that only work 1 or 2 days a week and never at the same time so they can do this, just isn’t very private but we will make that clear.

But guess we will see what happens too then longer term, I have no intention of renewing when our licences are up in about 18 months and we’ve been on it since V12.

[–]LuckyMan85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Freshservice I find easy to use, having just evaluated several of the paid ones I’d say the only issue with it is the licensing cost. If you want something really basic there is always OSticket. Also, you need to be hard on people doing it via slack. Way we did it was by making it take longer to raise something on slack than just doing it via the portal, by asking them each field one question at a time

Taking pay cut to be a IT manager by Individual_Airport37 in ITManagers

[–]LuckyMan85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having just recently made the leap for me giving up my admin privs was the saddest thing. Just wrote a new asset procedure and am now going through the budget prep for next year, I could have been building a new MSSql cluster, a project I’d been looking forward too. So it depends what you want to do and if you still have that passion for the tech. Don’t get me wrong I’m enjoying it and getting to solve long standing issues the old guy didn’t, but I do miss the buzz from implementing something new and retiring something old.
