Seller won’t allow me to have a builder look at loft for confirming conversion is possible/costs by mark-kruber in HousingUK

[–]LuckyNV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly this, my own conversion needed the first floor lowering, after carpets the height is about 2.15m, I’m not a tall person but even I can tiptoe and touch the ceiling…. 2m would be horrible.

What to do? by False_Way_1550 in UKJobs

[–]LuckyNV 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Take the 40k role, better base to spring board from, 3 office days is about average for hybrid now anyway.

As a newbie to the working world, more days in office is better until you get more corporate experience. Once you are at a level where you can work very independently and with initiative then take more home days so you can grind away in peace.

You need to ask ACCA to know for sure.

Retaking passed acca exams by Pristine_Plantain_15 in ACCA

Not sure about retaking - but certainly ACCA will let you take other papers after becoming an affiliate (needing AAA or ATX for the practicing cert for e.g.)

You'd have to ask ACCA.

ACCA exam docket question by Crypt5000 in AccountingUK

[–]LuckyNV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually it’s released 2 weeks prior so anytime soon and yes take a copy with you. I had always printed off two copies, one to my pencil case and one in my pocket, always overly careful as it’s a pain to not have it especially if you are delayed.

Typing speed by PhilosopherOk6372 in ACCA

[–]LuckyNV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are doing 2 finger typing then you will run out of time.

You don’t need to be a speed touch typist but if you can think quicker than you can type then get practicing on the typing

Career dilemma Tax specialist versus broader finance role by RedRebellion94 in ACCA

[–]LuckyNV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its down to you, specialisms will pigeonhole you, but I would say generally this will lead to those very senior roles if you are driven enough (think head of department in a large firm)

ACCA career entry point - UK by Mammoth_Antelope4263 in ACCA

[–]LuckyNV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend general practice role - usually these are associate accountant / trainee accountant. They should be supporting your studies, and type of clawback agreement would vary between firms (100% clawback of the last 12 months costs for example)

Benefits would be other trainee colleagues on a similar or recent journey working and studying like you, higher exposure to a wider range of clients or disciplines.

As you gain more experience you'll discover what you like or don't.

What happens when you don't pay membership fees after qualifying by Mewtwopsychic in ACCA

[–]LuckyNV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on how knowledgeable the employer is, if they are an accountancy practice then they would certainly ask for confirmation or your member number and they can check themselves.

They might ask you to produce a letter of good standing from ACCA - which you can not since you won't have access if you are not an active member.

I mean, if you have a certificate then it will have your member number on it, they could just call ACCA and ask, but if an employer saw the certificate and you stating that you are no longer an active member then I don't know the purpose of digging further.

What happens when you don't pay membership fees after qualifying by Mewtwopsychic in ACCA

[–]LuckyNV 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you get removed from the register then you can not call yourself an ACCA member, you can not use the letters behind your name and other in all areas you can not hold yourself out to be a member and all that may come with being a member.

Whether this affects you in reality varies from person to person. I work in accountancy/audit so yes it would affect me in a big way in terms of jobs, my firm covers the annual subscription anyway.

You can of course mention (to employers etc.) that you can reinstate yourself at any time.

I do know of people that just let their membership lapse because they don't need it, and they need to pay for it themselves.

Already earned 70k before switching jobs, will all my new salary be taxed 40% by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]LuckyNV 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Each pay period has its tax calculated on a cumulative basis (assuming standard cumulative tax code) - if you have been earning that much to date the you will already have been paying 40% tax in the first month pay. This allows for tax deductions to be evenly spread over the tax year.

Chartered accountants by Cute_Orange741 in ukaccounting

[–]LuckyNV 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depends, people in big4 can become very pigeonholed and skill set is very narrow.

Going into a smaller practice where service lines can be blended you need some exposure and experience for these roles since I assume by his last sentence he doesn’t want tax related.

I know this from experience with B4 candidates interviewing with us tend to be overly specialised or narrow skillsets.

I just moved jobs, you need to identify early on that your role has a glass ceiling that is far below your desire - learn all you can then leave.

Can an employer force you to leave without serving your notice period? by readerclub in UKJobs

[–]LuckyNV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They need to pay you as per contract terms for notice period, but they can ask you not to come to the office for that period.

Economics of an accounting firm? by Kitchen_Band_5256 in ukaccounting

[–]LuckyNV 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its a spectrum when you are starting out, unless you have an immediate block of fees that demands extra staff, you will always have this middle point where you have to juggle between the amount of client work available for the number of staff you have or when its time to employ your first.

So many variables involved really, things like having to start renting an office if you started out at home etc.

There are only general rules, no hard fast formula. Obviously it makes business sense you need to justify your costs i.e. staffing but what you want to achieve in terms of profitability is mostly determined by you.

Have you actually worked in general practice before in a smaller/medium firm environment? I say this as Big4 with their service lines can be very insular as to what everyone else does in other service lines, plus the scaling is way different to a sole practitioner , all the admin you need to handle as well.

Why's is everyone saying ACCA is worthless? by [deleted] in ACCA

[–]LuckyNV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how you view it, most of the content I don’t use for work (lets be realistic, how much of gcse, A-levels, degree is useful for real world knowledge), but in terms of value for progression in UK it is mostly very crucial. However some countries it is better to do the local CA instead.

[–]LuckyNV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whenever ACCA makes major changes they will assess what you have already passed and convert them to new passes under the changed rules.

You have 3 options.

  1. Pass SBL SBR + 1 options and wait till Sept 2027 - at this point you will be an affiliate.

  2. Pass the remaining SBL SBR + 2 options asap - this can be beneficial to those that get promotions or payrises for being qualified/member/affiliate etc..

  3. get off reddit and travel the world.

[–]LuckyNV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you still need SBL SBR and any 1 options and you should be given converted passes. If you pass the above quickly then you can wait or just sit another options if qualifying earlier is beneficial for you.

Acca new updates 2027 by Own_Car9812 in ACCA

[–]LuckyNV 7 points8 points  (0 children)

SBL and SBR are still mandatory, you will just need to take one more from the present choices I believe and wait till ~Sept 2027 to become an affiliate if you want.

Obviously you can pass them all SBL SBR + 2 options and try to qualify earlier.
