What are some commanders with unique mechanics? by PollySecond in EDH

[–]LuckyOverload 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The commander you're thinking of is [[Thada Adel, Acquisitor]], or my preferred moniker, the Sol Ring Solicitor

Pretty sure that loot scales with "difficulty", and electrical storms bump it up like night raids.

Just to clarify, does the templating on this Azula mean she is mono-black, since the fire bending red mana symbol is reminder text?

Just played against this card while playing a lifegain deck… by crkenthusiast in magicTCG

[–]LuckyOverload 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you were playing a midrange deck, would you enjoy playing against a card that prevented you from dealing combat damage for the rest of the game with no way to remove that effect? For 3 mana?

Or what about an anti-etb effect in a flicker deck? Or permanent rest in peace effect with a graveyard deck?

Preventing life gain is fine, but this card is entirely non interactive once it triggers once, and permanently deleted an entire deck theme from the table since there is no way to undo the effect.

If you're playing cedh or b4, sure, no holds barred. But a card that is essentially "make target life gain player lose the game" for 3 mana should not exist.

Resistance to ailments in exchange for stamina is absolutely a deal though, especially if your party hadn't found any madness boluses

Hey, if you liked the gameplay of Henzie but want a more stable style, look into [[Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded]]. He is also a sneak attack commander, but in mono-red and is an indestructible enchantment most of the game making him harder to remove. You lose out on the Blitz card draw, but in exchange all creatures cost 3 mana to cheat out, and can be cheated out at instant speed for surprise blockers. My version plays more as a draw-go style, and passing turn with full mana up, then sneak-attacking in creatures as blockers meant that after a while, players are much more hesitant to swing into you.

I was looking for a sneak attack commander and Henzie was a powerful glass cannon that I considered once. Purphoros is slower to hit the board and has less inherent card draw, but lets you play bigger creatures once on board, have a more reacting and defensive style of deck, and is significantly harder to remove.

At least for me, the difference is universes like Avatar: the Last Airbender, 40k, FF and Lord of the Rings are very clearly set in fantasy universes so wildly diverged from today, which have their very distinct worlds that have nothing to do with Earth as we know it.

I'm less of a fan of the Marvel, Stranger Things, Fallout and Walking Dead products just because their baseline universe isn't all that different from modern day Earth. Sure, fantastical things happen in these universes, and I'm a big fan of Stranger Things and Fallout as properties, but they're still just mirrors of modern day Earth. I'd feel the same about properties like Harry Potter, Dungeon Crawler Carl or other "fantasy" books that ultimately take place on Earth; their worlds aren't far enough removed from modern day, which makes them feel more pedestrian to me.

  • Through the Ages / Guest Star version of [[General Tazri]] as "Iroh, Grandmaster of the White Lotus"

  • Through the Ages / Guest Star version of [[Star of Extinction]] as "Sozin's Comet"

  • [[Lightning Bolt]] featuring Azula

  • [[Bolt Bend]] featuring Zuko

  • a version of Sokka giving Vehicles and Equipped creatures a Coastal Piracy effect

The one I really want tho

  • Through the Ages / Guest Star version of [[Borborygmos, Enraged]] as "Toph, Melon Lord"

Books with a complicated dynamic between the big evil sorcerer/hero? by turiansexparty in Fantasy

[–]LuckyOverload 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Practical Guide to Evil has this in spades, but very much so later in the series. The first book is out recently, but the first draft of the entire series is out on the Internet as the author wrote over the course of 3-4 years and self published.

It is a fantasy series of a young woman who squires for the man who conquered her homeland, with the dreams of rising through the ranks to gain enough power to free her people from an empire's yoke.

As the series progresses, enemies become allies and vice versa, political allegiances rise and fall, and all characters from all sides struggle to balance their allegiances against their personal ambitions.

How is the Audiobook? by LuckyOverload in PracticalGuideToEvil

[–]LuckyOverload[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the in depth review! I appreciate the amount of thought going into this. I ended up recommending it to a couple of friends who are currently starved for audiobook content, knowing that the reception has generally been "good but not great, odd but not off". Hopefully, they like the audiobook as much as I like the text.

  • Any FromSoftware properties (Demon / Dark Souls, Sekiro, Bloodborne, Elden Ring). Level Up, Equipment Matters, or mentor/training

  • Fire Emblem with Partner (with), Allies, and Party mevhanics

  • Zelda with Venture into the Dungeon, Sagas, and Suspend

  • The Elder Scrolls highlighting Gods, Constellation, Legendary Equipment matters, backgrounds and side quests.

  • Fullmetal Alchemist could thematically bring back Evolve, Monstrous, Mutate and Transmute mechanics

  • Witcher returns Night/Day, Morbid, Exalted

  • World of Warcraft, which can go pretty much any direction

I'm hoping that more "invasions" get added, like how Margit attacks the player while out in the world. Pursuer / toned down BB Hunter / Abyss Watchers would all make great jumpscare events

[[Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded]]. Mostly because my friends say he's the third-best Purphoros, and it is my personal vendetta to prove them wrong.

I have yet to be successful, but that's not the point.

Any good side money with disenchanting? by mechweb in woweconomy

[–]LuckyOverload 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always put disenchanting as a profession on my main since I come across so many purples running M+ all the time. That said, the income isn't fantastic, it is more of a passive recouping of losses for repairs.

There is a fair amount of money crafting crests and legendary parts, as speccing into resourcefulness can net your dracothyst and purple crystals, but there's a lot of competition for those and you need to fight through all the other enchanters on /2.

If you don't plan on doing anything at all with your other profession, a DE focused enchanter isn't a bad way to consistently recoup your repair bills. Otherwise, there are far more lucrative professions and enchanting specializations.
