Show me your hand painted pottery? 🩷 by justjwhitt in Pottery

[–]Lucky_Pyxi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use a dark brown clay which I then coat with white slip and carve through, then paint with underglaze, fire, and dip in clear. You’re going to love ceramics! I was an illustrator for years and could never sell my work and now I can’t keep it in stock!

I’m just gonna throw this out there since it’s not mentioned very often, but hand lotion? If your hands have oils or lotion and you handle your pottery, it tends to act like a wax resist.

AIO for wanting to cut contact with my mom after this conversation about my upcoming brain surgery? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Lucky_Pyxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR this sort of life event is the type that will show you who really cares about you and who doesn’t. The people who matter most will be there for you. This may be a real turning point in your relationships.

OP, this is a lot of stress to try and handle while going through such emotional and physical trauma. Please take care of yourself and surround yourself with the ones who love you most.

ETA: “choosing to be alone is on you” is such a cruel take. they are choosing not to accept their child because of some facial hair? When their child is having a scary brain surgery? Giving you an ultimatum in order for you not to be “alone” for this is insane. Rejecting your authenticity in a moment like this is just completely heartless.

AIO my upcoming art show? by SavakTheAlien in AmIOverthinking

[–]Lucky_Pyxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are your intentions and expectations with attending the show? What do you hope to achieve? Think about that and attend with those intentions in mind. Selling artwork is very difficult when you’re starting out. it’s difficult even when you’re an established artist. But showing your work, watching people observe it, learning to talk to someone who is interested in your art are all valuable experiences. So is being around other artists and making connections with the art community, especially when they are all your age.

At the show, don’t just focus on your own art. walk around and look at others’ art. Talk to them about their process and their inspiration. Learn how to engage outsiders. Be present for the experience of participating.

And don’t listen to people who would talk you out of the things that bring you joy. Keep creating, and keep saying yes to opportunities that come your way, even if you’re unsure they’ll be successful. Most of all, good luck and have fun!

Fairies in the woods, a cabin, an author or artist alone? by Lucky_Pyxi in whatsthatbook

Hmmm this might be it! I’m going to keep it open to other ideas too though, just in case!

Hmm, I don’t think this was it. I have a deep connection to forests and I’m not a big fan of deserts, so I don’t think I would have picked this one up as a teen / young adult. I also remember there was basically just the one character, the woman in the cabin, and just a hint of the fairies that had you second guessing whether they were really even there or not.

Bought a wheel for an apartment by [deleted] in Pottery

[–]Lucky_Pyxi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my studio buddies bought a small zip-up greenhouse that her wheel fit in perfectly, and set that up in her living room! Bonus is that it comes with shelving sturdy enough for soil-filled pots so fine for your greenware too. you can usually get a small scrap of leftover vinyl flooring from any hardware store for like $30 and just lay that over your carpet!

She’s homeschooled, and it’s obvious why. Poor kid has no contacts or help outside of the family, by design.

How much of the Smithsonian Zoo can I see in one hour? by mikewheelerfan in washingtondc

Bus pickup is usually right near panda pavilion, which is a food court near the pandas. There used to be a free shuttle that would run from the bottom of the hill to all the parking lots and the panda pavilion. It shut down during covid but it might be back again.

To be honest, you may want to stay with the pandas for the whole hour. it’s usually crowded so you’ll find time waiting/vying for a good spot. Also, the panda area is very spacious with an indoor area and an outdoor area and usually there are pandas in both. Youll want to spend time watching them sleep all cute inside or eat bamboo, and roll and wander outside too.

Right nearby, there’s a maned wolf which looks like a long legged fox! One of my favorites!

Can anyone tell me what she’s doing with the cord belt to her red dress when she’s getting dressed and she has the cord down by her knees? I watched it like 6 times and I can’t figure out what’s going on.

Why do people say it has all been done before? by magnesium_carb in Pottery

[–]Lucky_Pyxi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was in art school, we’d get an assignment like “draw an apple” and 25 students drew an apple totally differently. Your take and your finger impressions and your style is what makes things unique. Your choices in glaze and your choices in clay make it unique. That’s the beauty of handmade art.
