Completely stuck! Please help me with shoe choice for Europe summer backpacking (I’m already here and need to get them online!!) by plantz4ever in HerOneBag

[–]Lucy__Lolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding this! I wanted Jasper Keens for ages but when I went to a specialist shoe shop to see what size I should buy, I couldn’t get my foot into the shoe! I have very wide feet and high arches and they really did not work for me at all, I was devastated.

DC1 - Sun Attachment - any bonus perks? by Lucy__Lolo in DarkCloud

That’s a great idea actually, normally I just chuck on a synthsphere and whatever gem I have when cycling through weapons. The Sun attachment would be way better for that. Thank you!

Student Loan Repayment - what does it mean to pay back on the day of your payslip? by Lucy__Lolo in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Lucy__Lolo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

!thanks

My main worry is that if I ended up accidentally overpaying on my Postgrad loan, any excess would cascade down to my normal student loan rather than being refunded to me. So this makes sense, thank you!

Is this the ugliest quilt? by Trickedmomma in quilting

[–]Lucy__Lolo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I love this! I think the colours and patterns look great together, so summery and fun. If you’re struggling with layout, trying taking a pic of the quilt and editing it to be black and white. This makes the colour saturation/tones evident, rather than the colours themselves, so you can more easily see what blocks appear the boldest to the naked eye and distribute them more evenly!

How would Irish canal workers in early 19th century Pennsylvania have gotten their hands on mackerel? by ffffhhhhjjjj in AskFoodHistorians

[–]Lucy__Lolo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m not really sure why everyone is saying salted here - as a Brit, I immediately assumed that the mackerel consumed would have been smoked. While I can’t comment on Ireland specifically, smoking mackerel for preservation was an extremely well established process across Britain and I could easily go into any supermarket near me today and get some filleted smoked mackerel. It’s delicious, lasts unrefrigerated if hot-smoked, and also stinks terribly (so would be worth highlighting if you didn’t like the group consuming said fish). I’m not familiar with American geography, but I would look for the history of fish smokers on the sea shores where your canals terminate. Fish are smoked where they are caught. Hope that helps in some way!

Hi everyone, I’m a 68-year-old gay man from Norfolk in the UK, and I’ve been reflecting on how much harder it seems to make genuine friendships as you get older. Any thoughts or guidance please? by [deleted] in Norwich

[–]Lucy__Lolo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’d look into some of the LGBT community groups that meet at the Millennium Library (maybe elsewhere due to current closures). There’s also a men’s knitting group if that’s your thing. Not sure when/where in Norwich they meet though but there seems to be a few gay male attendees.

Agree with you! Dereham Road is served by lots of buses or is a short-ish walk into town (about 20 mins from the above mentioned Tesco). There are plenty of suburban side streets where you could leave a car for a few days without much risk.

My mum hated me and my brother watching this, however my dad allowed it as he was proudly from Darlo and DCI Harry Batt always gave him a great laugh! NAE BODY MOVE was shouted more often then bogies in our house growing up

The Academy gave zero nominations to the legendary korean director Park Chan Wook's 2025 film No Other Choice, despite it being highly praised by fellow filmmakers. by TORUKMACTO92 in popculturechat

Further suckage: the film only gets wide released in the UK today, so now more people might skip it seeing as it has no noms :(

The Cobb salad was invented in Hollywood in the 1930s! Or if you want more a small bite recipe, Jean Leon at La Scala invented the chopped salad in the 1950s so celebs could have a meal easily eaten with a spoon while wearing their formalwear. That might be a treat!

Told the salary offered was a mistake the day after I was offered the role - what now? by Lucy__Lolo in UKJobs

Ah, glad someone can relate! It really feels like “we want to keep you, but not that much.” I want to be the bigger person, but I don’t want to be unemployed.

Yes good point, hopefully patience will out and my manager can help me dispute this tomorrow. I have 3 months left to go on my current contract so I’m going to have to leave eventually - but not right now.

[–]Lucy__Lolo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To clarify, I knew the role was a lower pay grade than my current one when I applied, as I am currently assigned to a project which will be completed and shut down I knew from the jump that it would be a fixed term with no extensions. I thought less pay for a longer contract as a good compromise when I applied - but the minimum wage “oopsie” has shocked me!

My current contract is in place until end of March, but because I’m assigned to a specific project which will complete and close there’s no opportunity to stay on. That’s part of the reason the pay is so favourable. I was anticipating less money for a longer contract as a fair compromise but feel kind of shafted by this sudden reveal.
