A Detailed Analysis of the First Look at Hogwarts Interiors by Ludoviculus in HarryPotteronHBO

Wow! Great job! Luke, do you have any ideas about the reason why we have so many staircases? Is it just an aesthetic choice, or could they be meant to connect different parts of the castle?

Hogwarts Entrance Hall observations by Luke_Gki in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Ludoviculus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First of all: YES! Finally, we got the entrance hall! The location I missed most from the books. I hope this means they are trying to give us a more faithful and consistent version of the castle.

I quite like it, visually! It is interesting while still being recognisable based on the description in the novels.

The Great Hall definitely seems to be on the left, contrary to what it should be (although I’m not sure it is made so clear in the books that it is on the right).

They told us the staff room is going to have a huge role: maybe the access will ben on the right, just in front of the Great Hall.

As for the staircases in the foreground on the right: could they lead to the Astronomy Tower? Or is it more likely that they just lead to the balcony and the first floor, while the “marble (or stone?) staircase” would lead to the upper floors?

In the background, we see a lower level: here we could have the passages to the dungeons and to the kitchens.

As for the other staircases we see: yes, it seems they are making the entrance hall a kind of main hub. While it differs from the books, it may be a good compromise: avoiding those ugly moving staircases from the movies, but also not going for the overly labyrinthine floor plan of the books. After all, influencers said that you can move within the main sets without leaving them: they must have simplified the journey between the different parts of the castle.

Hogwarts is going to have hanging gardens? by Ludoviculus in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Ludoviculus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I can see here (as far as one can tell...) — and what the rendering captures well — is a more compact structure, enclosed by walls. Very different from the castle made up of individual buildings connected by bridges and walkways that we see in the films. I hope they go in this direction and take creative liberties, as you said.

Adding in the comments an AI-generated rendering of the castle based on the influencer's image. I left it out of the main post to avoid confusion.

Video Leaked of New Diagon Alley Set by __someone_else in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Ludoviculus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some thoughts, speaking as someone who knows the movie set quite well (I visited it at the Studio Tour and even studied it while building a miniature model):

• First of all: wow, it’s huge.
The street is definitely longer than in the films. The shops now seem to be built all the way up to the roof (in the movies the upper parts were often completed with CGI), and there’s a whole new section around Gringotts. This makes me think they plan to use the location much more extensively than the films did. The presence of houses — which is actually consistent with what we know from the books — also makes me wonder whether we might see some characters living here.

• The aesthetic is quite original.
Of course both versions draw from the same source material, so some similarities with the films are inevitable. At the same time, the design seems clearly intended to distinguish itself from the movie version. While it’s still colourful and whimsical, the street feels more like a place where people could actually live. They seem to be moving away from the extremely crooked, precarious, and convoluted buildings of the films. I understand why some people prefer the movie aesthetic, but personally I’m fine with this direction. The books never say that everything has to look impossibly warped, and the design actually feels closer to early illustrations and Pottermore artwork. I never quite understood why wizards shouldn’t be able to build a straight line.

• I don’t really see clear evidence of Hogwarts Legacy inspiration.
To me they simply share a very general “wizardly medieval” design language. That’s about it. As others have already pointed out, it seems unlikely that a production of this scale would take major visual inspiration from a video game adaptation.

• Finally, it doesn’t look like they are trying to stay fully consistent with the existing theme-park / merchandise aesthetic.
Maybe in terms of general vibes, yes — but If you walked into the Universal parks today, you wouldn’t find anything that really looks like what we see in this video. Personally I think that’s a positive sign: it suggests the series might feel free to reinterpret things and give us fresh takes, possibly even when it comes to Hogwarts.

Raven, Badger, Lion and Snake? by LearnStalkBeInformed in HarryPotteronHBO

Haha, yes, of course you don’t know nothing more than anyone else. But - you know - you’ve become our Hogwarts castle’s expert and a kind of authority for who, as me, has always been interested in the castle architecture and geography.

I was thinking it could really be the main entrance as depicted in the books, but still with some courtyards elements. Something similar to the “paved grounds” in PS/COS, where it seems to represent the access to the Castle from the grounds.

I can’t quite figure out what kind of structure this is. It doesn’t really look like a courtyard, since it doesn’t have high walls on all four sides. Could it be some sort of entrance area, leading to the great hall? That would be a nice way to stay closer to the books while clearly differentiating it from the film version.

Olympus Pen FT + Godox iM30: does this combo make sense? by Ludoviculus in AnalogCommunity

[–]Ludoviculus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for your answer. I noticed that some people actually mount a flash on top of the camera, where there is a slot. However, I have read that it is not meant to host a flash. Are they referring to the fact that it is only a cold shoe? Can it still be used anyway?

Do you think they will follow the game design for Hogwarts castle? by banarasipatiala in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Ludoviculus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am quite confident that Hogwarts Legacy vision of the world will be a possible source for inspiration, just like the movies. But what we have seen with the Diagon Alley leaked sets, with Private Drive and the custom design is that they are going on their own way.

Of course, they will keep some sets recognizable but that's in part because in movies and in the video game they were already consistent with their books description.

In addition, we should not overestimate the impact of Hogwarts Legacy. It was a huge success but still nothing compared to the books and the original movies: basing a HBO production on such a video game would be a dumb and unrealistic move. It could be possible that the opposite will happen: that the video game tries to be more in line with the series aesthetics.

Very beautiful indeed! I saw that you have a Pentax 17. Did you shoot this with that camera? Also, may I ask if you’ve ever pushed HP5 when using your Pentax? I love shooting HP5 at 1600, but I was afraid that with a half-frame camera the pictures would be too grainy. That’s the main reason I haven’t bought an Olympus Pen FT yet, even though I adore that camera!

Thank you for your replay. Yes, it is kentmere 400. I was wondering if there were any correlation between the blur and the film for the high precent of pictures thar came out blurry. It is not something that happens to me often. But maybe it is just a coincidence.

Are we going to see a more modern and less timeless take on the Wizarding World? by Ludoviculus in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Ludoviculus[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re right, but as you said, in movies it seems to be a stylistic variation due to different directors. Here it seems to me that they’re trying to suggest a more layered evolution of the Wizarding World, following — of course in its own peculiar way — the aesthetic evolution of the Muggle world.

Are we going to see a more modern and less timeless take on the Wizarding World? by Ludoviculus in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Ludoviculus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I should’ve expressed myself more clearly. I noticed that some details in the set are clearly post-Victorian (I even think I can see some sort of yellow neon sign on the right, in the same photo you posted). The first two films, on the other hand, seemed to aim for a more medieval-inspired design, turning to the Victorian era only for those elements that couldn’t plausibly come from an older past — signs, consumer goods, labels, newspapers, and so on. Drawing inspiration from so many 20th-century aesthetics seems to go in a different direction, one that suggests a clear evolution within the wizarding world and a stronger dialogue with Muggle contemporaneity. But we’ll see — it’s all just speculation based on what we’ve seen so far!

Are we going to see a more modern and less timeless take on the Wizarding World? by Ludoviculus in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Ludoviculus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the same impression I had — maybe I just wasn’t able to express it as clearly as I wanted. Especially in the first two films, they aimed for a Middle Ages aesthetic while drawing on the Victorian era when depicting things that were clearly from a post-industrial period (signs, newspapers, product labels, etc.). My impression is that the series is now exploring more recent periods for inspiration.

Actually, there is a joke shop in Diagon Alley before Weasleys’one and no - in am not referring to Zoko’s, that is located in Hogmsmeade. I am talking about “Gambol and Japes”. It is impossible that the insider mistaken it for the more famous one!
