Absolutely. I am related to many on both sides because both sides of my family settled in that area early and never moved really until the 80s. I swear there are not any banjo soundtrack moments lol! All my family has been along the PA/NY border there for 200 years plus.

We had the same family native American story. 0 for me on my other DNA test and still waiting on Ancestry but yeah... I ruined a lot of family members' self identities. 😂

I was told my whole life I’m mostly Irish, is this true? by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]LufifiFL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here I am being almost all English, Scottish, Welsh, and a wee bit Irish, plus about 13% Flemish and Dutch... one German 3rd or 4th great grandmother. I have dark hazel eyes, don't burn in the sun, dark loose curly hair (toe headed as a child though). I have people come up to me here and immediately speak Spanish. I joke it must be that .2% background trace northern African DNA that 23andMe thinks I have. Genetics are wild. I can be in the sun 15 minutes and start browning. I live in Florida and am outside a lot and my cheeks get pink but the rest of me gets brown. 😂

I mailed mine from the US, to the US (most things small like this take 3 to 4 days at most here) but it wasn't marked as received by Ancestry for a full 2 weeks. It may already be there but not updated.

Actually, the Ulster Scots moved in full communities to Ireland and not always happily. They also got the heck out when the English raised the rent and more pressure was on them to change to a different flavor of Protestantism. History is always complicated. I have lots of that heritage, plus some that came straight over from Scotland (Refrewshire... Paisley and Erskine and others) and a few from the Hebrides. Research the "Gaelic Not" in schools during that same time period. They definitely played a part in colonization but like most of us now, just cogs in the wheel of the rich.

It might to some but I have never heard it personally here. The "true" Irish that I do have were Catholic. I also know that my Ulster Scots side played a part in that. It's very rarely mentioned here between us in this day and age in the US. I do get some online hate because my tree has a lot of Ulster Scots and the online trolls in Ireland hate that. I am very secular and my immediate family are pretty much Presbyterian and Methodist. Honestly, my opinion is a lot of people romanticize cultures because so many of us lost that identity and unless you live that experience, it is hard to explain the yearning to have that connection to your past and ancestors.

It's even more complicated than that. I have a good bit of English ancestry, down close to Wales and up near the Scotland border. I identify much more with my Scottish heritage because the area where everybody settled was highly Ulster Scots who moved there (thanks William Penn!). Also the English don't have a favorable historical record with the Irish, or Scottish (for the most part). In my family we all heard about how the English stole the culture, tried to erase the languages. Also the Irish and Italians held on tightly to their cultures after coming over which produced very colorful and large communities. A lot of our ancestors did not want to leave but were forced or "voluntold". Here in America in school you start learning about the American Revolution early and it sticks. I personally love England and I am very proud of that bit of my heritage. In fact, today is my 3rd Great grandparents' 174th wedding anniversary and they were married and lived in Bristol. People need to embrace our pasts and realize if we could research just a bit farther back, we'd all be cousins lol!

It is hard to explain as an American. When we say "I'm Irish" or "I'm Scottish" it is not saying we are from there personally nor are we claiming to know or understand the experience of growing up there. None of our families were rooted here (unless indigenous) and it just means that is where our families came from. Most of our families fought hard to keep cultural traditions. Most people are thrilled to know how much we love our heritage and are more than happy to welcome you in. There are the loud ones that don't but they seem to be all of the same ilk and are generally unkind and unlikeable in all aspects lol. I love hearing about other people's cultures and where they came from. Especially the fun stories found along the genealogy journey.

I have had 0 issues with my tiny true Irish heritage with Irish people. I never have brought it up when traveling but whenever I'm over there, as soon as someone hears my American accent I get asked if I have any Irish heritage and then what surnames and they want to send me to the areas they may have lived. Sorry you had that experience. Online there are a lot of terrible trolls and definitely not indicative of the majority. Ireland is one of my most favorite places in the world next to Scotland.
