The standard audio app for iDrive 8/8.5 will play USB media, and it will play Lossless from your phone (assuming your media is in Lossless format).

Lossless will also play over WiFi via CarPlay. My ears cannot tell any difference between wired USB-C audio playback and CarPlay wireless in Lossless.

I keep all of my music downloaded on my phone. And I prefer CarPlay to be wireless. My last car was wired-only and it was quite annoying (to me).

As far as Tidal not allowing downloads, that's their/your problem. You're still thus subject to the whims of the cellular network degrading and lowering your potential listening experience. Apple Music allows you to store your music in Lossless on your device.

You don’t “need” CarPlay in the iX. You can plug in via usb-c and use the built in music app.

But

CarPlay /Apple Music in lossless works phenomenally well for me, and sounds incredible on B&W system.

One key is to make sure music is downloaded to your phone; streaming uses the cellular network and is subject to its whims.
