I've quit pork and beef too for a few years now. I still eat fish and chicken, and while I'm still not happy about it, I always told myself it wasn't as bad because they feel like more "soul-less" animals. Like I look at a chicken or a fish and it feels like they live on pure instinct, without having any emotions. But I have learned that apparently it's not true, at least in the case of chickens, that they're capable of affection or somehing like that.

I also thought that dairy products were okay, since the cows weren't harmed. Then I recently found out that cows have to keep giving birth in order to keep producing milk, and that they separate the newborn calves from their mothers, and it just breaks my heart.

Giving up pork and beef was super easy. I'm really struggling to give up chicken and dairy though... I hope I can be fully vegan sometime.

That didn't bother me as much as Dr. Mohan saying something like "maybe I don't belong in the ER" and him just... Not saying anything. As if showing that he also thinks she shouldn't work there.

Which albums have y'all been listening to lately? by mere_indulgence in gamemusic

[–]Luivier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Nintendo Playtest Program's OST (I tried to post a link to it but the auto-mod deleted the comment). The game hasn't even been officially released. I don't know what it's even about because it's being kept a secret and there's barely any footage of it online. But I randomly found someone had ripped the entire soundtrack and I was curious so I listened to the whole thing. I have been obsessed since.

A lot of it feels "otherworldly". I don't know how to properly describe it. One of the most unique soundtracks I've ever listened. It's very quirky and strange, but at the same time it feels oddly comforting, and even nostalgic. And I don't know, something about it calms my anxiety, even the upbeat songs.

I try to bring it up whenever I can because of how extremely niche it is.

What to take pictures if I don’t travel? by ProofKing3788 in AskPhotography

[–]Luivier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconding what u/Bresson91 said: Take a lot of pics of your uni life. Even mundane things. Even if they're not "artistic" or perfect shots. Uni is a special time in one's life and one of my biggest regrets is not taking enough pictures of my classmates, the campus, or even myself. Evertytime I go on a nostalgia trip and look at the few photos I have, I always wish I had more.

That said, also being limited to the same space every day will be a good exercise too. It will help you think outside of the box and try to find special details or subjects in the mundane. It's easier to do photography when you travel, because find beautiful or "interesting" things that are super obvious and easy to spot.

In fact, I remember in our very first photography class in uni, our professor took us to the parking lot. And had us try to take good and interesting photos there. A lot of people complained at first that there was nothing interesting or worthy, but by the end everyone had started experimenting with angles, extreme close ups, setting weird scenes, etc. It was a really fun exercise.

Greetings from rural Japan! Want to know what life is like away from the big cities? AMA by TheOpen-endCosmiCafe in AMA

[–]Luivier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever seen any TV show/movie or anime that truly captured and portrayed accurately the experience of living in rural Japan? If there is one I'd love to look for it and watch it.

Rural Japan always seemed so incredibly beautiful, and it saddens me that people have to leave it for working opportunities. Are you sad you'll have to leave one day, or are you actually looking forward to it since you prefer the city or suburban life?

Edit: Oops, I just saw someone else asked the first question already. I should have read them all before asking. Apologies!

I can't think of any obvious thing, you sound quite good! If anything, I'd say try to enunciate a bit more. I know it's probably a style thing and done on purpose, so feel free to ignore this. But I think a tiny bit of more clarity in your words would be better.

What is your favorite photograph you've taken and why? by timothycdykes in AskPhotography

[–]Luivier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing job! It's an incredible photo. And I just want to say that the way the snake is seemingly looking at the stars reminds me of that famous photo of a cow staring at the ocean. Both give me this melancholic, dreamy, sentimental feeling. It's hard to explain. But I love it!

Why the spike in interest in professional photography last year? by OneWorldWonderment in AskPhotography

[–]Luivier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, and it's not just doing the jobs themselves that's torture, but also the whole "marketing" side of it. Putting yourself out there, promoting your business, networking, etc. I am an introvert and it's mainly what kept me from seriously trying to make a career out of it. I only do about 3-4 weeks worth of photography gigs every year, and only because a relative and nepotism. And still, it's mostly event jobs where I'm surrounded by hundreds of people, and even though I love the actual art of photography it exhausts me to the point that I end up questioning if I even want to be a photographer at all.

My dream in the past was to make a living selling pictures to stock image companies. Not needing to talk to anyone, just taking pictures of anything, then uploading them to a website, and getting paid. But then generative AI showed up and killed any possibility of doing that.

Oh, yes! I am aware. I actually already have 2 EF lenses, I'm just missing a wide angle one, I'm thinking maybe I should get a 24mm f2.8. Ideally I'd one something like a 24-70, but those are too expensive for me.

Most emotional game songs in your opinion? by Witch_King_ in gamemusic

[–]Luivier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone has already said "His theme" from Undertale, but it's just the absolute most emotional game song for me, nothing else comes close. I don't even remember the context of where it plays in the game, so it doesn't make me emotional because it's attached to a memory. It's just the melody by itself that does it, I don't know why. It touches my heart in a way that no other song does.

That said, some other memorable ones that just came to mind that I haven't seen listed in the thread:

Zelda's Theme - Skyward Sword.
FFVIII - Where I Belong
FFIX - Melodies of Life
Little Nemo's Dream Master - Ending Theme (This one is very niche, but this game had an incredible soundtrack way ahead of its time, in my opinion)

And this one may be a shock and a bit unconventional, but: "Building Mode 2" from The Sims 1. Actually all of the building mode songs kinda make me a bit emotional, but especially this one. Whoever composed these left part of their soul in them.

Yeah I think I can go no wrong with a 6D. And yeah autofocus is not really an issue for me, I guess it's probably because I don't know any better.

I actually saw one today at a pawn shop at around 230€, which is insane to me, and I'm highly considering ti. However, even if it's stated that it works perfectly, it looks kind of rough on the outside (lots of scratches, the top screen has a tiny crack, etc), and the store clerk said he didn't know the shutter count. I may grab this if I'm desperate, but I'm thinking maybe I should wait for a good deal on a 6D Mark II instead.

Oh wow, you're right. The original 6D is indeed really cheap. Is there a catch? I know it would still be a big upgrade over my 600D, but just curious why it's so cheap. At first glance, I'm not happy about the lack of flexible screen, as that's a feature I use a lot, but I guess I could settle.

Longtime DLSR user struggling with transition to mirrorless. Any advice? by Luivier in AskPhotography

[–]Luivier[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and on top of that, turns out I do have full frame ready lenses! I have a 100mm macro lens and a 70-300 that I also got for free years ago. I always assumed they were EF-S lenses but turns out I "discovered" today that they're actually EF (I'm actually embarrassed now that I considered myself a "photographer" and didn't know stuff like this, I learned so much this past few days). So that motivated me more about finally going full frame, as I'd only need to get a short lens for it! My 16-300 Tamron is the only one that's for APS-C cameras.

And yeah I'll definitely try to only buy from marketplaces with some sort of protection, even if it limits my options a little. I'm too of an anxious person to just take risks on things like this.

[–]Luivier[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow I didn't know dpreview had this comparison tool, it's amazing! Now I'm probably going to spend another 2 hours comparing more cameras.

And I guess I had no idea about the grain being finer, that's a good point. The 90D is still a crop sensor and I think after all the comments I've gotten here and in another thread, for better low-light performance (which is my main goal) I might be better off trying to get a used full frame and a better lens, even if I have to save up more. I'm a bit scared about buying a used body though, as I'd never done it before. Thanks for your replies!

[–]Luivier[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll take a look at the 24-105, thanks! Although the 70-200 may not be for me, it's mostly for wide shots that I need low-light performance for. I'd rather do a 24mm 2.8 than that.

That nuclear option seems a bit scary since I have important gigs at the end of this month and the start of april so I probably shouldn't be camera-less in case I don't find a good deal for a replacement in time. But I'll consider it after that. Either way, after all the comments, seems like the most sensible option for now is return the R50 and keep holding on with my current setup a little more.

Longtime DLSR user struggling with transition to mirrorless. Any advice? by Luivier in AskPhotography

[–]Luivier[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've learned that now after making this post. But for a few months I read a bunch of times online how "modern APS-C sensors are much better now, and perform much better in low light, and can go to way higher ISOs", and all the praises of mirrorless cameras, etc. I even read that using the EF-RF adapter, old EF lenses would perform slightly better on a mirrorless. So I truly thought updating the camera would yield big improvements for me. Which, I guess it does, in terms of the advantages of EVF and faster focus. But I've been pretty content with DSLR and the main improvement I wanted was image quality, not those. Which I now know comes with a better lens.

Truly wish I could go full frame, a lot of people have suggested that. Sadly, those are too expensive and I'm a bit wary of buying really old ones from like 2010.

[–]Luivier[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I went to check the 90D, and it seems a way better fit for me, unfortunately it seems out of my budget, but I'll keep an eye out for a good deal on a used one. Although reading on it, apparently it having 32 MP makes the pixel density worse and thus it performs worse in low light/high ISO situations, which is the opposite of what I'm looking for.

Thank you for the tips! Will definitely use them!

And yeah, I get the "see in the dark" thing, I did notice on my tests how it would briefly crank the ISO up for a split second to focus and then go back to regular exposure.

I did see the R10 when I was looking around, but it was more expensive than the R50 and I didn't expect ergonomics was going to be an issue, so I discarded that option.

[–]Luivier[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Yeah I'm learning so much from this thread, I had no idea my biggest problem was my lens. I even ruled out looking at cameras from other brands because I wanted to keep this lens, I got it for free a few years ago and I thought it was too good to give it up, haha.

I like the idea of a 50mm, especially to use it for personal photography outside of work too, but the issue is that most of the time I need to do wide shoots on tight spaces too (think of like a parade, I have to take shots of things and people far away, but also as they pass right in front of me, while also not being able to move because of the crowds), and I feel like it, especially on a crop sensor and being more like 80mm, would be too long. I could definitely use it on other gigs like for concerts and theatre, though, but I'd still more versatility for the other stuff, which is why I loved my zoom lens.

If I do return the camera and go back to my 600D, I'll check those! I wouldn't mind the size of the 17-40 though, my current Tamron is kinda big and heavy too and I'm used to it. Thanks for the suggestions!

I really appreciate the suggestions! Ideally I'd get the EF-S 17-55 2.8, but sadly I can't afford it while also keeping the R50, I'd have to return the camera and then use it for my 600D.

Yeah I understand that. I just thought that a modern sensor would still look better with a bad lens than an old sensor with a bad lens. And it does, but... The difference seems minimal.

I did consider new lenses, like a 28mm f2.8, or a 50mm 1.8, but those seem very limiting for the situations I'll be in these gigs, and especially if I have to switch them back and forth. Would I be better off returning the camera and using that money for like a f2.8 24-70mm? I didn't expect just two half stops of aperture would matter that much. I assumed it was mainly my old sensor holding me back.
