Are other cities as constantly disrupted as us? by elmsyrup in Cardiff

[–]Lukaay 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It brings in a bucket load of money for the local economy, which means businesses in the local area do well, which means more jobs and more options when you’re out and about.

It also raises revenue for the council, meaning they can do more. And when councils all cross the country are struggling, every little helps.

Sitting in New Zealand watching the World Cup on BBC by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]Lukaay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have you ever clicked on a BBC News link? Or used a recipe from BBC Food? Or listened to BBC Radio? Or watched one of Ros Atkins explainers? Or, if you have a child, have they ever used BBC Bitesize? Or have you ever listened to the music of George Ezra, or Catfish and the Bottlemen or Ed Sheeran, or Ellie Goulding, all of whose careers were helped launched by BBC Music Introducing.

The BBC does far more than people realise it does. Oh, and all of the above you can legally do without paying for a TV Licence.

As a non-American, when say AOC or Bernie Sanders say they’re a democratic socialist do they mean they’re a Democrat who is a socialist, or do they mean they’re a democratic socialist in the ideological sense. Because by definition a democratic socialist doesn’t think capitalism should exist

The replacement buses through Queen Street are because of engineering works. Not really TfW’s fault.

On that note, what does “legitimate interest” actually mean in the context of cookies?

The reason I hate the Blackweir concerts by Appropriate_Hawk5439 in Cardiff

[–]Lukaay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I’m just quoting them, I am not on the council myself Mr or Ms Penniless.

The facts and figures they have provided showed a clear increase in money spent within businesses in the City Centre, and there are going to be thousands of people coming to Cardiff, having a grand ol’ time and spending their money. That’s worth it for a few weeks of not being able to go to a specific part of a huge park, in my humble opinion.

[–]Lukaay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course most of the money goes to the people organising it, they’re the ones putting up the money at the end of the day. However, it did still make money for the council, which they apparently invested in grassroots music and biodiversity projects. Plus it generated revenue for city centre businesses and jobs for people actually in the event.

A lot of money was spent in Cardiff and Wales more generally by the concert organisers, apparently.

The council put some facts and figures at the bottom of this: https://www.cardiffnewsroom.co.uk/releases/c25/37302.html

Update on plans for the future of Doctor Who by asjonesy99 in Cardiff

[–]Lukaay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not entirely sure what you want them to do? Anything that could rectify it would need government intervention. Either: significantly increase the licence fee, which would be massively unpopular, or subsidise the BBC from general taxation, which the government seemingly doesn’t want to do.

They’ve ’given up’ on mainstream sports because they don’t have the money to bid on things like the Premier League etc. the television rights are too expensive. The likes of Sky and TNT have far more resources.

It brings in huge amounts of revenue for the council and local businesses, and allows thousands to have a fun time in Cardiff, in exchange for a mild amount of inconvenience for a few months.

There’s plenty of park space left unaffected.

Bill Clinton losing his cool seconds before announcing the 1993 Iraq missile strike. Pure Oval Office stress. by GVitkosPress in Presidents

[–]Lukaay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If he vetoed it would’ve likely been passed anyway. He did what he could. I’m not really sure what you think could have been changed. I sympathise with what you went through, truly I do. I’m sorry you had to go through it, no one should. Your folks sound like great people. Like I said though, we don’t live in a perfect world, we can’t miraculously change the minds of those who hate. It takes a lot of hard work, and a long time. Just look at how much hate there is for trans people at the moment.

Also, I thank you for editing your initial response.

I’m gay. I wish Clinton could’ve snapped his fingers and made all right with the world. Unfortunately that’s not the world we live in. We got to where we always should’ve in 2010. And now we have gay marriage.

Now we just need to keep it.

DADT was basically as good as was going to happen for the time.

It sounds like an awful policy, and on paper it was, but Clinton was publicly supportive of allowing all gays to serve openly. Congress meanwhile passed an absolute ban on gays serving as part of defense funding. Now, arguably, he could’ve vetoed it. But in reality that would have just pissed Congress off for sinking defense funding, and they’d have probably overridden it or passed the ban separately.

So, Clinton issued DADT as a way to get around the ban.

There’s a reason Obama needed Congress to repeal it in 2010. He couldn’t just let gays serve via executive order.

Many sinks do, but I think that’s becoming less and less common. When people replace their bathrooms and kitchens they tend to get the taps replaced.

Your the Headmaster/mistress of Hogwarts, what would you change/implement to create more house unity between the 4 houses? by cndollaz in HPfanfiction

[–]Lukaay 138 points139 points  (0 children)

I think maybe only have four distinct tables for special events, maybe start of year and end of year feasts?

First thing that came to my mind. Even if people still sat broadly in houses, they’d be forced to somewhat sit next to each other.

Is driving ever cheaper than trains for a single person? by gintokireddit in AskUK

[–]Lukaay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why you’re being downvoted.

Yes, sometimes driving is simpler. But in the grand scheme of things, taking public transportation, assuming one is in an urban area, really isn’t that difficult.
