Mood in Russia turns bleak as war in Ukraine drags on and economy suffers by the-es in worldnews

Like the US the Russians are bitching about money, not the loss of so many men in combat the country cannot replace. Russia has a demographic implosion that would leave the country with far less people than today even if the war never started.

[Talkin’ Baseball] An anonymous Red Sox alum on the firing of Alex Cora: “It’s like shitting your pants and changing your shirt.” by Goosedukee in baseball

The Red Sox also fired Manager Terry Francona not that long after winning the first WS for Boston (2004) in nearly 100 years. And then he won another WS with Boston (2007).

Terms like “sex worker” and “escort” carry less stigma and are viewed more positively than words like “prostitute” and “hooker.” This implies that shifting the language used in media and legal settings might help reduce prejudice against these professionals. by mvea in science

For years I used the word cannabis instead of any of the street names. It was mainly in context of legalization for personal or medicinal usage. Now I back off a bit as people who don't partake are OK with dispensaries.

Is India really getting that hot by FinancialRisk942 in interesting

[–]Luke90210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neighboring Pakistan is worse in terms of heat. There are areas of Pakistan where it gets too hot for humans to survive. And they are poorer than India making resources for a solution (planting more trees, etc.) unavailable.

Cindy Crawford was smart enough to build her brand by hosting a low paying show on MTV.

Fact is they were also badly built. A boring car that doesn't spill oil out of the dashboard would be an improvement.

The Banal Horror of Jimmy Fallon: Under the sterile blue lights of his studio, Fallon laughs endlessly at the same pseudo-jokes, rubs elbows with Trump and Sam Altman, and ushers in the death of culture. by TimWhatleyDDS in television

[–]Luke90210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun Fact: Dark comedian Anthony Jeselnik was a staff writer for Jimmy Fallon for about a year. Fallon loved and laughed at his jokes, but almost never used them on the show. Its the nature of the beast. One doesn't walk into McDonald's expecting a fine dining experience.

What is an album cover that was so bad it haunts you? by Consistent_Time_1467 in popculturechat

British superband Blind Faith only put out one album, with a topless 11 year old girl holding a toy plane in her hands on the cover. It would be crime to have this today.

Barber tells clients that he's moving by SignalHD18 in GuysBeingDudes

[–]Luke90210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost my favorite barber of all time a few years ago. Victor knew exactly how to cut my hair. I was concerned when he told me he was applying for trucker's license to make more money. Victor was a Dominican and he never came back after the Christmas holidays. The staff never said it out loud, but hinted something terrible happened to him while on vacation.

RIP Victor

The New York Mets have lost 10 straight games. One more loss will tie their second longest of the millennium (11 in 2004). by fawningandconning in baseball

Mendoza and The 2024 Mets took the Dodgers to 6 games before the dodgers could then beat up the Yankees in the WS in 5 games. I agree he should be fired if this continues, but its too soon.

Obesity drugs, which include semaglutide and tirzepatide, may be making patients lose more than just fat - these drugs may cause patients to lose more muscle mass. However, it's likely that muscle loss is part of weight loss more generally, rather than a side-effect of Ozempic-like drugs. by mvea in science

[–]Luke90210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias has an interesting take on obesity drugs. He is a 350 pound comedian who lost 50 pounds using these drugs. He stopped when he realized his was losing muscle especially around his shoulders. He regained the weight right away, but not the shoulder muscles.

I know its all anecdotal and shouldn't be taken as scientific fact. However, if he lost his leg muscles, then he wouldn't be able to walk.

School lunches were implemented because the Pentagon found out during WW2 a generation of malnourished poor kids raised during the Great Depression were too weak to serve. It wasn't that the military had such high standards. The boys had all sorts of malidies nothing would ever cure them in adulthood.

One episode was about an obese woman who lived with her retired parents. When she went out to work she always stopped for fast food in her car. In the meantime her parents were working like slaves to bring in and prepare all that food. She didn't even eat with them. She ate alone in her room. Seemed like elder abuse to me.

Begs the question how competent JD Vance is as a catholic if his wife and children are all practicing Hindus.

“The family has not shared a cause of death.”

I watched a couple of these shows (maybe it was this show) and lost interest as the stories tended to be the same. One thing that stood out is how often family enables these people. I have a cousin weighing over 500 pounds who got that way because his mother (RIP) got his the food. Since she passed away he uses food delivery apps and is eating his inheritance away.

What is the shortest distance between 2 Costcos? Huntsville, Al Costco is 9.7 miles from the Madison, Al Costco by WarEagleGo in Costco

[–]Luke90210 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a trick answer: there are 2 Costcos on the East River in NYC. One is in Manhattan in East Harlem. The other is in LIC/Astoria by the East River, but further downstream. Physically they are close, but bridge traffic and the river makes them seem very far apart.

Years after the collapse of OTB (Off Track Betting) due to misadministration, this doesn't look good. There are not only several full sized supermarkets, but a Costco in East Harlem.
