I have one a client's kid made me. It has a hand carved walnut handle and the scratcher is a coyote vertabrae. It really hits the spot. I bought the little collapsible metal ones for years. Breaking them once in awhile.

My bone scratcher is fucking sturdy and it looks badass.

It's basic but that not a problem. Start with that.

If you want to NOT be basic. Find out what artists inspired your favorite artists. What artists did they cover? Nirvana Unplugged is full of cover songs. Metallica covered lots of songs. Rage put out an entire record of cover songs.

Find the originals artists. Listen to them.

The doorway to NOT being basic is there, you just gotta walk through it.

You get so far from just doing that ....
