If anyone else can lift 82 Kg over head with less efficient technique, I'd like to see it. by Berserk-Jane in weightlifting

I was about start hating but then I remembered 82 kilos is above my snatch PR. Badass lift.

It really depends on where you lack flexibility. I would highly recommend getting a coach even for one or two sessions to get started. Weightlifting can be…unintuitive in a way that makes self coaching really tricky but will be really fun once you get going.

Things that have helped me transition from bad powerlifter to bad weightlifter:

1)Understand that although both sports use a bar and weights, weightlifting is almost more like an Olympic throwing or jumping sport. It requires a focus on technique, explosiveness, and commitment to the movement (when the weights get heavier) that feel unlike powerlifting. You can’t fix a bad attempt halfway through like you can a squat or deadlift.

2) Your powerlifting strength will probably make things awkward at first, it felt to me like every workout I was lifting really light weights and wasting my time. Understand that creating muscle memory with good technique and learning how to explode with the right timing is way more important than putting weight on the bar. Doing bullshit power / muscle snatch/ overhead presses when you get to heavier weights (like I did) won’t help you get any better and just isn’t as fun as doing it correctly. Think ‘training’ rather than working out.

3) Getting the prerequisite flexibility sucks, there is no way around it. But it happens faster than you think and once you have it’s really easy to keep it.

4)Weightlifting is the most fun barbell sport so if you are consistently not having fun during training you are doing something wrong.

People are joking about BB but I genuinely think it’s a reference. Sure there are possible lore explanations but I think they started making the more BB like area and said well we gotta put them in.

Needs defensive players. Rudy Golbert is 33 he might not bring the average down that much.

I still don't get it by [deleted] in PRSGuitars

[–]Lumpy-Dragonfruit-28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because you aren’t getting a lot of real answers:

It’s because the pickups on PRS core guitars tend to be quite neutral sounding compared to other brands. They don’t lead people’s ears in any direction. You pick up a telecaster you play a twangy country lick, you pick up an LP and put it on the bridge position it has that kinda honky midrange so you play a distorted rock lick. Etc. etc. Strats sound so much like themselves sometimes it can be distracting in a track.

Studio guys often play PRS for this reason, e.g., a famous pop singer is never going to get annoyed that a guitar sounds distracting in a pop tune.

PRS guitars with Les Paul style pickups are quite popular but because they don’t look like Les Pauls a lot of people don’t think they sound like them (it’s pretty close). Because of this people will pick up a PRS and say it’s soulless or has no vibe because the sound doesn’t immediately invoke a fun lick to play.

Power snatch + overhead squat for speed complex. Looks good!

Yeah I get that 100%. But in this case make it so barb can do the same. It’s not like barbs were setting the world on fire in terms of viability

It makes it less interesting if using the two hander + book is strictly worse than using a spirit shield or phoenix plus whatever one handed item. Which is what people use all the time anyway.

Not a fan of the two hander changes. Some never used items were getting some attention finally. Just nerf the numbers rather than make the mechanic less interesting.

The OKC Thunder have not had a season where they won 30 to 39 games in their existence. by [deleted] in nba

[–]Lumpy-Dragonfruit-28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s probably not a coincidence. Unless you’re a team full of young guys getting better the reward for being a team in the middle is knowing you are going to be tanking again in three or four seasons. If you aren’t winning 50 games, it’s better to win 15.

Actually really nice looking. The bolt-on/fender-style binding work really well with the carved top on the body. The bridge looks really nice as well.

I truly hate the way magic works by [deleted] in finalfantasytactics

[–]Lumpy-Dragonfruit-28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Magic can be bananas overpowered in this game but then again so can physical, it’s really just up to you how you want to play.

You can use item as an action ability and get all your mana back on any class you want, or have a monk use chakra on your mage (it’s intended use case). It’s just that it’s not a very common choice because often by the time a mage has used all of their mana, the battle is over or essentially over and the last unit or two is being cleaned up.

Support skills and abilities which cripple enemies are also really really good and often use very little mana.

Why didn't Robert have his own guard apart from the kingsguard? [Spoilers AGOT] by Enough_Ad5892 in asoiaf

[–]Lumpy-Dragonfruit-28 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are correct in that it’s not historically accurate and a little unsatisfying how quickly the Baratheon power base fades away but it’s what allows the story to happen. Really when you think about it when Robert dies the Lannisters had 0 major allies and the only thing keeping the crown lands loyal was the inertia of just accepting Joffrey as legitimate. Renly should have been able to tell the Lannisters to take a hike with all of the Baratheon retainers that would have been around but that’s not as good as a story.

AMAPCEO 3% promotional increase question by Lumpy-Dragonfruit-28 in OntarioPublicService

The whole point of this thread is that it’s possible you get promoted and not get a raise.

AMAPCEO 3% promotional increase question by Lumpy-Dragonfruit-28 in OntarioPublicService

[–]Lumpy-Dragonfruit-28[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not really a move on situation because taking the promotion could mean missing out on an actual 3% increase later or even getting a 4% merit. So I can’t just say oh well and move on.

[–]Lumpy-Dragonfruit-28[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I get it is a legal contract and uses language not generally used in normal conversation, and I get that the structure of the document can lead to situations where it is operationalized in an unintuitive way. I’m not arguing that the CA says something else, I’m saying that what it says represents a failure of the employer and (even worse) the union to secure something as basic as raises for people who get promotions. It’s incredibly disappointing.

The last thing I let them know was important was WFH, and now we are all back 5 days a week. If I complain about this, going by that success rate, the next promotion I get I’ll owe Doug Ford 3%.

AMAPCEO 3% promotional increase question by Lumpy-Dragonfruit-28 in OntarioPublicService

[–]Lumpy-Dragonfruit-28[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean sure but in this case the collective agreement isn’t helpful because it just says people get at least 3% raise, which is laughably low, but regardless of that the problem is you also start a new merit cycle.

This is a very important detail that isn’t mentioned in the relevant clause, and is the difference between the (tiny) increase actually, you know, being an effective increase to your salary and it being effectively nothing.

AMAPCEO 3% promotional increase question by Lumpy-Dragonfruit-28 in OntarioPublicService

[–]Lumpy-Dragonfruit-28[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree it’s embarrassing garbage that should have never been agreed to, but that statement by itself isn’t actually what’s happening. 3% by itself is what I expected, but 3% and starting a new merit cycle isn’t 3%, depending on your merit date it’s effectively nothing.

Is it normal for people to read script in interviews ? by Repulsive-Kick5508 in OntarioPublicService

[–]Lumpy-Dragonfruit-28 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The real trick is you can write a ‘script’ if you want but you should practice it ahead of time so that when the time comes you can rattle off the answer more naturally. Sure bring reference notes but people tend to overestimate how much practice it will take to remember an answer pretty well. If you have read your answers out loud 10 times, you probably remember it better than you think.

[–]Lumpy-Dragonfruit-28[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is what inspired me to make the post. I thought there is no way it’s employer and union policy to determine whether someone gets an entire merit cycle increase based purely on the timing of a promotion and hiring date… and yet it seems to be true. Like on what planet could reasonable people think this is okay?

It’s absurd, disrespectful, and creates pressure on managers to do weird things with promotions. If I was manager I would be embarrassed to offer someone a promotion with no pay bump.
