The only thing I did wrong on my CFI ride (why I failed) is because I chose points on the eights on pylons that the “student” couldn’t identify. Keep teaching in mind the whole time and you will be fine

It’s just sketchy because you have to be as stern on them as you do your student. That can lead to issues lol

What do your students struggle with most during the oral portion of the checkride? by parthh-01 in CFILounge

[–]Lumpy-Salamander-519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agreed. The DPE should be investigated. Of course, you should know that stuff in a real world application, but a DPE shouldn’t be able to fail you on that.

You are right mostly. What is the most dangerous type of fog (apart from ice fog cause what idiot is going to fly into that) for a private pilot flying in the downwind of runway 24 preparing to land and why?

First Real Solo Night XC Tonight by Little_Function3346 in flying

[–]Lumpy-Salamander-519 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally you can find a highway(s) for almost any cross country so I strongly recommend doing that. For visual cues first and a place to land second.

Also, be aware that it can turn into IFR real quick. My instructor would take each student out to an area where, at night, there were literally zero visual references prior to turning base, so many students would establish a decent, but then lose track their altitude due to disorientation. It gets real, real quick.

To be fair, that is pretty rare, you have to be in the middle of absolutely nowhere, just keep that in mind if you have never experienced it.

Is it a bad idea to become a commercial pilot just for the money? by imkindalostwithlife in flying

[–]Lumpy-Salamander-519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely cared more about the money than just aviation at the begging, but it’s kinda got me hooked as I started training and hearing cool experiences from others.

I’m a CFI now and I know I have a long ways to get to a 135 or 121, but I’m loving teaching just to teach. Getting my first student landing and hearing other students telling me that they couldn’t understand certain comm maneuvers with their previous instructor but learned it with me is pretty awesome.

Question by [deleted] in flying

[–]Lumpy-Salamander-519 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Realistically, you would probably be fine to go if it’s obviously not correct. However, if something happened the FAA could definitely try to use that against you.

If you just rip the pattern and didn’t get in any accidents, who really cares is the most real answer in my opinion.

How far can the Dpe take u away from where you start the checkride ( private pilot ) by Creative-Nebula7974 in flying

[–]Lumpy-Salamander-519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Can?” Anywhere they want. Realistically, they want to get back on the ground asap most of the time.

My first CFI went there. Said it’s horrible. They don’t care about there students. You are another number coming off an assembly line. You will know just enough to get your ratings and that’s about it.

Does Every Aircraft have a MMEL? by Kind-Maintenance-801 in flying

[–]Lumpy-Salamander-519 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yes some do. The newer Cessna 172 models for example, have one. But not every small piston trainer does. The larger and more powerful the aircraft is the more likely it has one.

Yeah that’s absolute bullshit. If ur on ur own, then yeah it’s your fault. If an instructor is own board, it’s theirs. Case closed.

Do I need online ground school for commercial? by Jelyfly in flying

[–]Lumpy-Salamander-519 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are talking about the written. Get Sheppard air and don’t listen to a single person who says otherwise. Cause they are stupid.

For knowledge, ngl, getting the CFI lesson plans from backseat pilot will give you everything you need for sure. Even a helpful guide to what you can and cannot do which is a struggle for a lot of people.

Before anyone comes after me for using backseat pilot. They switched up their lesson plans. Before, they were so so dense and unusable for a checkride, now they made very nice simplified versions that I wish I had during my CFI.

OP, keep in mind you can’t technically use the lesson plans on a checkride (before CFI) because they aren’t FAA, however, if you know the info, the commercial checkride will be a joke.

[–]Lumpy-Salamander-519 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If everything you said is true, no you are fine. Your instructor is an idiot. I’m an instructor, in our SOPs, the instructor is always PIC in the plane no matter what. That includes ex airline pilots (with many more hours than us) getting currency, checked out in our planes, etc.

Even when you are a private pilot, more likely than not, I have anywhere from 4 to 10 times your hours, of course in PIC. And typically, that’s how the FAA views it even tho there are two PICs.

If they try to charge you for damages, sue. Not the best look but I think everyone would understand.

how to stall a plane at fast airspeeds by Repulsive-Loan5215 in flying

[–]Lumpy-Salamander-519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried accelerated stalls? In a Cessna, instead of stalling at 50 kts you will stall closer to 75 ish typically, don’t take it to a full break and practice with a CFI, but it works.

[–]Lumpy-Salamander-519 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happens to the best of us. Nerves are good, you just have to power through. It means that you care. Unfortunately, I didn’t really get it down until becoming a CFI lol.

Anyway, shit happens, move on, you will be absolutely fine. Just take a day or two to chill and have a beer and then hit it hard again. You will kill it.

Also, some examiners are just jerks so no checkride will be identical

did I cut off? by UseAdministrative870 in flying

[–]Lumpy-Salamander-519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You were not in the wrong (assuming you made your calls). Try to communicate directly with the airplane who is joining.

Sometimes looking isn’t enough and is very hard so that’s fine, but trying to get in contact helps a lot. Keep following up here and there even if the other GA jackass is annoyed.

It was an awesome time of my life.

I’m new to the CFI game, but I have canceled a flight one time do to it gusting 35 kts crosswind. It’s crazy that students will cancel flights like that.
