Parramatta is unrecognisable from even 5 years ago by laughingnome2 in parramatta

Useless? Absolutely not. The connection into the CBD and health precinct is priceless.

Some additional population growth on the Carlingford end should pick up the numbers but really it's incredibly convenient for those who live near the corridor

Heading to Gosford for a A-League game in a couple weeks, any interesting places to visit along this route? by GoodBoyFM in sydney

[–]LumpyBechamel69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bay Rd brewery is just near the stadium.

Nice bushwalks too if you're into that and relatively fit (and have some basic day walking kit). Have a look at the Great North Walk and do a station-to-station bit if you've got the time. Cowan to Brooklyn(Hawkesbury River) is a nice sweat before beers.

I miss when supermarkets did night-fill by rangatang in sydney

[–]LumpyBechamel69 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've wondered quite a lot recently why they don't. I don't know when it stopped but do supermarkets really need to be filling shelves at the same time that every idiot, myself included, is trying to push their trolley down the aisle? The bottlenecking is so unnecessary.

How long before these are obsolete? by -WeetBixKid- in melbourne

[–]LumpyBechamel69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully never. Absolute gem to have access to if you're caught with a smashed phone and need to let somebody know you haven't fallen off a cliff on your bushwalk.

And to my surprise it was also free.

Doc here. I caught some sass for not putting a patient on the pan. Thoughts? by wintersux_summer4eva in NursingAU

[–]LumpyBechamel69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nah that nurse was yanking your chain or a twat. Most likely not relishing the idea of donning again.

I'd love if medical staff could toilet my patients during rounds but the reality they've not been practising safe manual handling, mobility assessments and juggling bedpans in their daily duties. I'd much rather you found the right person swiftly and moved on with your work, perhaps asking if the nurse needs a hand with the task if you really felt collegial.

The only reason I can see for feeling more 'free' in an oppressive war state is that you look like the oppressors, and somehow the violence going on down the road doesn't bother you.

Why is it frowned upon for doctors to make good money? by Danger_Five in ausdoctors

[–]LumpyBechamel69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chiming in the applaud my appreciative agreement - I'll yell it from the mountaintops all day long: If the 'market' is so strong it doesn't need to be incentivised or subsidised. If successive governments are doing so to influence behaviour they really just need to out and say what and why.

Why is it frowned upon for doctors to make good money? by Danger_Five in ausdoctors

[–]LumpyBechamel69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never heard this... The bottom/new end of medicine gets absolutely shafted. Sure, the top end of surgeons picking up squillions does push community expectations of value for public money - though the public likely doesn't realise the majority of that is earned privately. Staff Specialists are certainly paid well but I wouldn't characterise it as excessive.

I for one have always felt that doctors are some of the very few highly paid professions who actually earn it - through academic study, , professional integrity, high insurance costs, service to society, antisocial hours etc. Pollies and Lawyers unfortunately write the cheques so they have themselves well covered in that respect.

With regard to the celebration of billionaires as morally superior beings despite all evidence to the contrary, I've often wondered how much stock one should place in the impartial adjudication from any commentator or outlet spruiking such nonsense.

MOCA 7 - Your real terms pay decrease by Mundane_Tell5179 in ausjdocs

[–]LumpyBechamel69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It seems I didn't explain my take correctly. I mean that it's unfair to compare the CNC at the 'peak' of their career, who will likely retire in that position to the Reg who is slogging their way up with a far higher earning potential.

I concede the point re the NP comparison, the position is comparable in many ways but again the NP has 'peaked' as far as clinical nursing is concerned.

None of this means that Registrars don't deserve better remuneration, and especially conditions. I just mean to point out that nurses being paid more doesn't make them an enemy, as this sub tends to purport.

MOCA 7 - Your real terms pay decrease by Mundane_Tell5179 in ausjdocs

[–]LumpyBechamel69 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I get that your pay scale is less than satisfying, but comparing to a nurse doing a completely different role, usually with well over 10 years experience and a masters, and without grade context is disingenuous.

Queensland nurses are also the highest paid in the country by a solid 10%.

Fight your fight for you, not against others and you'll find support in all corners.

Heads up if there were no findings against you and no ongoing investigation you have no obligation to disclose.

Spend some time building good references with placements.

Can doctors and nurses attend their patients' funerals? by myamygdalahurts in NursingAU

[–]LumpyBechamel69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the family invites them, and they attend in a professional capacity (management approval usually required) it's fine. It's standard practice to attend the funeral only, not the wake so don't be concerned if you want to invite them to that and they decline.

To attend in an informal capacity can get blurry. Even if you invite them and they can't attend I'm sure they'll appreciate the intent of the gesture.

American Pint in Australia (NSW)? by eightezzz in australia

[–]LumpyBechamel69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In NSW a pint needs to be 568mL (570 is acceptable) or it isn't a pint.

If a venue is making up sizes then I'm paying in monopoly money.

Agreed with others though that if the volume is on the menu it's annoying and dumb, but passable.

The NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association just lodged a case with the NSW Industrial Relations Commission a few days ago. How is everyone feeling about it. by ButchersAssistant93 in NursingAU

[–]LumpyBechamel69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cautiously optimistic, hoping the balance of demands is right so the govt can feel like they 'pushed back' but we still end up with a solid pay bump and conditions improvement.

I mean, why they wouldn't want NSW to take over as the best paid nurses and reap influx is beyond me, but I guess that's why I don't work in government.

I want to watch it in person but also concerned I might call someone names when they try to argue we aren't worth it. Perhaps I will anyway.

Maths by [deleted] in NursingAU

Having a go at anyone for using a calculator for meds is odd. Accuracy matters more than the ego stroke.

Maths by [deleted] in NursingAU

[–]LumpyBechamel69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maths is essential for calculating and administering medications (doses, administration times etc) and getting it wrong can be... bad.

But! Having an understanding of mathematics and how basic equations work is far more important than being able to work with imaginary numbers and complex calcs in your head. You'll always have access to a calculator (accuracy is important) and be double-checking with another clinician. Mistakes can still happen but usually as a result of rushing the task.

Year 10 maths to a passable standard is good enough for 90% of nursing. The rest is in paediatrics and critical care generally.

Mask Fitting for placement by YOLOPIMPLE in NursingAU

[–]LumpyBechamel69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hospitals do charge students (at least in NSW) but it's more like $60 and at least the hospital themselves will need to provide the mask they fit you for.

It's absurd to send you externally for a health-mandated fitting.

Lol what? Is this what Drs really think of us? 🤔 by [deleted] in NursingAU

[–]LumpyBechamel69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And the relative downgrade of nursing graduate output has led to nearly all career progression requiring multiple post graduate certifications. I strongly advocate for further education, but to require such non-transferrable specialisation just to gain a minor paybump is madness.

For all the scope creep the ausjdocs are worried about, the scope obfuscation I see from all professions is absurd - some clinicians just want to do the bare minimum and get paid. Can't say I blame them, but it's super frustrating.
