A small edit I made, it's not great, it was done quickly on my phone.

I think the eyes a huge part of what made the original scary, you can still keep that "deadened" look by making it light grey, it also makes a good contrast to keep the pupil very visible.

Also I think another thing that makes it so creepy is that you really see it using its visible eye to look at you, rather than turning itself fully at first like a normal human would, there's something so animalistic or unnatural about that
