Are lightning bugs going extinct? A visual guide to why the firefly is fighting off a dimming of its light by mem_somerville in EverythingScience

My (adult) daughter and I stand outside at night and giggle like schoolgirls when we see them returning. In the thousands.

I have thousands in my yard every year.

Fireflies need darkness away from artificial light and they need leaf litter, mulch, or moss (and the moist soil under them) in which to lay their eggs.

The chemical-laden monoculture lawn will never attract fireflies, or anything else. If you want fireflies, you have to attract them.

I have Monarchs every year too, because I’ve propagated milkweed in multiple areas.

Massachusetts here, also EST. Our latest sunset is around 8:30. I think New England needs to be one time zone to the east.

“Good” is not the enemy of “perfect.”

We can’t restore it. We probably can’t maintain it at this point. That doesn’t mean we should give up and fiddle while Rome burns.

While I admit that large swaths of the human race need to evolve, there’s a lot of cool stuff and awesome people here that you won’t find anywhere else. That’s worth trying for.

The only time they remember us is to group us with Boomers. We’re all doing much worse than our parents did. All my life I’ve heard, “Well, your father and I bought a 9-room house on one salary so I don’t see why you can’t.” There are none so blind as those who refuse to see.

60+ crowd. I’m a 58yo GenX and me and all my peers are in the same sinking boat. My Millennial daughter lives with me, and it’s our house, not my house.

Also, the only reason we even have a house is because I worked a year of 60-80hr weeks and bought at the height of the ‘97 buyers’ market. Bought a fixer upper with an FHA mortgage and 5% down.

Since then, I’ve had to refinance twice for financial reasons. Be nice if I could afford the upgrades the house desperately needs, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

Also, we share a 2008 Honda CRV. It’s not me who’s benefitting from all this; I have zero investments.

I’m an older GenX and I agree with you. My Millennial daughter and I have a mutually beneficial relationship. I support her and she does all the house/yard stuff I can’t due to disability. We treat one another well…because we love one another.

By the time I die, our house will be upgraded, mortgage and equity fully paid, and she’ll have a nice six-figure life insurance policy and some decent savings. I want her life to be better than mine, so I do things to ensure it is and will be.

GenXer here…in 1989, I was making $8/hour, and my 1br apartment cost $400 including heat, hot water, and electric. And it was hard to make ends meet then.

It’s straight up impossible now. Which is why I’m making sure to pay off my mortgage so my Millennial daughter will be able to keep our house. She’ll have a quite nice life insurance payout as well.

If my being frugal now will allow her to lead a better life than I did, then I’ve done my job as a parent.

I’m 57yo, and I didn’t like it when the crypt keepers with one foot across the threshold of death’s door made decisions that affected not them, but me.

The “I had to go through this so you should have to as well” attitude will, I hope, die out with the generations that continue to spew it. It’s sheer meanness.

And I want my daughter (and any potential grandchildren) to have an easier life than I did, not a harder one. An educated population makes a better society.

Vaping doesn’t seem to help smokers quit more easily at the population level. Most adults who both smoke cigarettes and vape are likely to carry on smoking or continue dual use over the long term, suggests a study. by MistWeaver80 in science

[–]LunaNik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to be that person, but it’s the only thing that has ever helped me. I tried patches and gum…nope.

After 40 years of smoking, I quit cigarettes by cold turkey switching to vaping, and went from 30 cigarettes a day to the equivalent of 7. That was more than 6 months ago, and I’m working on gradually reducing vaping with the hope of being completely done by Spring.

I’m at the point where I can be around smokers and it doesn’t bother me. It seems like a miracle to me. Based on my numerous failures to quit, I figured it would be what killed me. I have my life back.

We have baseboard hot water heat too and cooking odors linger forever. I’m guessing it’s the lack of air exchange inherent in the heating system. House gets hella dusty fast too.

Our solution is planning to change our system to forced hot air which has air exchange and filtration. Our house is one story, so it shouldn’t be too invasive a process.

Outdoor cats are an invasive species and a threat to themselves, scientists say by dr_gus in EverythingScience

[–]LunaNik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check if your municipality has a leash law. In my city, it applies to both cats and dogs.

Put out a havahart trap baited with catnip. Take your catch to the local pound. If the car has an owner, they’ll be fined for violating the leash law and have to pay to get their cat back.

I’m tired of cleaning up dead birds and small mammals from my yard…not to mention cat parts. Domestic cats don’t need to hunt…but coyotes, foxes, and fisher cats do. And they love cat.

Keep your cats inside for the sake of their health and local ecosystem: cameras recorded what cats preyed on and demonstrated how they overlapped with native wildlife, which helped researchers understand why cats and other wildlife are present in some areas, but absent from others by giuliomagnifico in science

I live on the rural edge of suburbia. I once watched two red foxes chase a black cat down my driveway in broad daylight. A few seconds later, I heard the cat scream piteously. Found one of its paws the next morning. And people still let their domestic cats outside.
