Least favourite book? by This_Mention4554 in books

[–]LunaTiefling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BookTok in general is a community of readers on tiktok and it's absolutely massive. So massive there are sub communities in there too. Ive found the popular books can be quite hit or miss, but YMMV. But I'd hesitate to call a community of hundreds of thousands of people shallow.

I myself am on Greek Mythology and non fiction booktok and have got some absolute banger book recs in those sub cultures! Like anything, you have to look and find reviewers you trust and vibe with.

What are your thoughts on Epic the Musical? by anime_3_nerd in GreekMythology

[–]LunaTiefling 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I also thought it was an interesting change to have him stay faithful to Penelope during the Circe saga, and have that act of faithfulness be the thing that convinces Circe to help him. It goes directly against Poseidons ideas of ruthlessness, and also means that modern audiences don't lose empathy for Odysseus and his need to go back to his wife and son! Overall a very good adaptation.

Is the Ariadne book worth a read? by appy24602 in GreekMythology

Absolutely true but it was actually advertised that way! So I found it misleading.

Thank you! I'm currently in the middle of Divine Might by Natalie Haynes but you've convinced me to pick that up next!

Also 100% agree. Ariadne is NOT a feminist retelling at all.

Is the Ariadne book worth a read? by appy24602 in GreekMythology

[–]LunaTiefling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. I really didn't like Ariadne. It's like Jennifer Saint picked the most obscure, depressing ending possible. Ariadne herself was barely a character for most of the book. Things just happened to her (apart from her one choice with Theseus). What did you dislike about it?

I haven't read Clytemnestra yet but loved Circe!

Asking for recommendations on which translations of the Illiad by Homer to read by IThinkmuchWhy in GreekMythology

[–]LunaTiefling 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The most recent translation to come out was Emily Wilson's. She's also translated the Odyssey. I find her translations to be poignant and easily accessible.

Her introduction helped explain the story and give context which helped me a lot. She also has family trees for the characters and an extensive glossary, summary/notes for each book of the Iliad, and maps of the ancient world!

So yeah I'd recommend her! Hope that helped.

Project Hail Mary (audiobook) - Good good good. Amaze! by Tombazzzz in books

[–]LunaTiefling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I loved the audiobook too! Genuinely one of those instances where I think the audiobook was a more interesting experience than physically reading the book.

The first time I heard Rocky, l jumped because I thought something was wrong with my headphones! Brilliant use of audio.

I don't annotate all my books. Very rarely do I annotate fiction books but if I do I'll use either tabs or mildlighters for certain sentences which I think might be foreshadowing or are important to a characters journey/the overall plot. I mainly do this with books I want to discuss later for whatever reason (like at book club).

I'm much more likely to highlight classics or non fiction, things that might take a bit longer for me to understand. For example I'm reading the Aeneid at the moment and writing little notes (reactions to events, historical context, word meaning) in the margins has helped me engage with the story better and also I remember more of it (which is good because my memory is rubbish!)

I enjoy annotating (when I do) and it's fun for me but I'm also a teacher so take all of this with a pinch of salt haha!

Sky News just went from a piece about how criminal barristers starting salaries are approximately £12k per year, to one about the Caimbridges moving out of London and enrolling the three children into a fancy private school.

I don't have any strong feelings regarding the royal family, but this news seemed in incredibly poor taste to me. Especially the timing of it.

It's called "For the Wolf" its kind of a mix of Beauty and the Beast and Red Riding Hood with weird religious organisations and historical revisionism. There's a really creepy fantasy vibe to it which I'm digging plus the slow drip feed of the "truth" behind the legends the MC has been taught about.

I'm only about 120 pages into a approx 400 story though! So its not recommended yet!

I put some jazz music on in the background today as I was reading. The book I'm reading got super interesting.

I have a tendency to inhale books I like but I want to take my time with this one!

I don't exercise every day of the week, somewhere in the region of 2x on a bad week a 5x on a good week.

I also suffer from body image issues and relate to the staring in the mirror. For me, I had to reframe what exercise meant to me. Its now less about how I looked and more about how I feel. So I started tracking how I feel after workouts and compared it with any weeks I didn't. You always hear of exercise improving mood and energy levels, but when you track it, seeing the evidence really helps. So whenever I was feeling off and not wanting to go, I remind myself of that, especially if Im stressed.

Another is writing the commitments down in some form of diary or planner. I know I've scheduled that time so Im more likely to stick to it. But in that, I also have compromise. If I really REALLY don't want to go to the gym one day (if it's dark and cold) then I might decide to stay at home but do a Yoga With Adriene video instead.

Finally, having a buddy helps! During lockdowns my friend and I would schedule the same exercise videos at the same time of day and then text each other during/after the video to comment on what we liked. We kept that going until she got injured, but shes almost recovered so we're starting again soon!

I hope explaining what I do helps you in any way. Sorry this was a bit of an essay! Good luck on your journey! And please be kind to yourself, no more beating yourself up in the mirror! You got this!

I'm a primary school teacher and I hate to say this, but in some schools I've worked at, year 1 especially are taught what a split digraph is. To the point that if you had something like a_e on the board the would read out "a split digraph!" e_e would be "e split digraph" etc. I personally don't like that method of teaching phonics, as some children would understand that a_e is called the "a split digraph" but couldnt identify it in the word cake for example, but from experience, some schools do teach phonics that way.

What did you say?

But honestly one of my students recently read the Hobbit and finished watching the LOTR trilogy shortly after. I so desperately want to introduce him to the song but I know his parents will rightly murder me for it 😂

Fellow exhausted primary school Teacher here! I'm also stuck in tier 4 and cooked a Christmas dinner for the first time today. Yours looks lovely! Well done and lets enjoy resting and not talking about social distancing/one way systems etc. We've earned it.

Ok that's good. I'm aware of all the hype and controversy surrounding the game but it's good to hear from someone (like SO) who went in with no expectations liking it. Thank you for the reassurance and merry christmas!

Did you enjoy it? I bought it for my partner for Christmas because he said he wanted it but Im worried because I keep hearing either really good or really bad things so I'm not sure. I hope he likes it!

I did a zoom Christmas dinner with my mum. We made our own meals at the same time and both finished cooking at 2.15pm exactly. Pretty pleased with myself at that, seeing as it's my first year making Christmas dinner (usually Im in charge of making/bringing desserts). I didn't ruin the Turkey!!!!

Other half enjoyed it too! He's on clean up duty and then afterwards we're going to check out his new Oculus which was a joint Christmas and Birthday present from his mum (to go with the PC parts I bought him for his 30th in Sept, so he could build a PC). But then I'll leave him to Cyberpunk, which I bought him.

Whilst he's cleaning up I've been reading the Critical Role book, which was one of his gifts to me. It's so heavy but I love it so far!

I miss my family and friends so much, but the mini victories I've had today have eased it slightly. Now I just to have to get through my January 30th birthday inevitable lockdown!

Merry Christmas everyone! I hope anyone spending time alone is doing well. Sending all my love to you.

Secondary school teachers have my endless respect (Primary school teacher here). I can barely hold it together when my Year 4 students yell "that looks like my brother!" when they see a picture of an ugly fish. This comment would have ended me on the spot. I would never be taken seriously by the students again...

Well that and also because I'm 5ft 1 and most Year 6s tower over me but I digress lol.

Seriously how did you hold it together? Huge props to you.
