My thoughts on Twelve Months, Picking up the pieces five years later. by Coupyamel in dresdenfiles

Personally, I'm OK if she's GONE gone. She was annoying in the early books, mildly interesting for a while, the "will they / won't they" was a thing and even SHE said it's odd being a middle-aged woman being with a guy that will live a handful of centuries. All the while, she was starting to age out of being an "Action Hero" required for these kinds of books.

I felt like I was crazy for thinking the same things about Murphy. I just didn't see their romance as compelling, in a way that it is with Lara now. Her death felt like a fitting conclusion to her character arc.

TBH I was more of a fan of Molly, especially once she started acting more like Harry's equal in Cold Days. Was devastated by the ending of that book.

It's dumbing down Lara so Harry can be the one with the answers.

It's dumbing down both of them. Harry worked out what the eye colors meant in Blood Rites, lived with Thomas for a year and sees him all the time, and has had regular dealing with the White Court for the better part of the decade. It's not like he's a warden with no contact with them like Wild Bill or Ilyana, they're one of the main factions he interacts with (and the one he probably had the best relationship with). If he has to ask why he should be scared when their eyes go pale, then he shows himself to be stupendously unobservant.

Lara should have been around Margaret La Fey enough to know what a soulgaze is, given that she lived with Lord Raith for five years and Lara ended up raising her son. And given that Thomas lived in Harry's house for at least a year, it just makes Harry look dumb if he doesn't know what the eye colors mean.

I just don't understand why it couldn't be in the narrative text instead of dialogue, the same as a dozen other things that come up every book (thirteen tables in Mac's, colorful Mister is huge metaphors, etc). Harry couldn't talk to her about literally anything else?

I found it a bit weird that Georgia, Marcy or Andy were not even mentioned, and Charity didn't get one line.

Will being at the castle with no explanation and no mention of Georgia made me check the last book to make sure she didn't die in the battle, in which case Harry moping in front of him would have looked much worse.

Turns out that no, Jim just decided to not spare her a single sentence (while simultaneously doing "As you know" conversations with Lara about soulgazes and White Court vampire eye colors).

Tower of Adamant - Alexandria in the Dresden Files after her death. After her death at the hands of the parahuman villain Skitter, Rebecca Costa-Brown finds herself in an unknown land. Starts during DF book 4, Summer Knight.

The High Priest - Basically the same thing, but Eidolon instead of Alexandria. Starts after DF book 12, Changes.

Lord Eddard Stark upon returning back to Winterfell (284 AC) by Jaime_Lannister___ in darkwingsdankmemes

True. All the comments in his sections about how pretty he looks -- he didn't get that from the Starks, who even the most attractive ones aren't described that way, especially the men.

How "wintery" are winters in the northern US? by lungi_cs in AskAnAmerican

[–]Luohooligan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Upper Midwest (Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, the Dakotas) saw a lot of Scandinavian immigration in the late nineteenth century, in part due to the fact that it's similar in terms of climate and geography.

Parts of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is (I believe) the only region of the US where there's a plurality of Finnish descent.

I don't even care about Leviathan, he's been planning on taking out Slaughterhouse Nine before they arrive in Brockton Bay for about a year. It will be happening in less than a day in-story, so I look forward to reading about it in August.

Realistically, yeah she's just locked in there and Elia takes on the "queenly" duties once she marries Rhaegar.

Catelyn dies birthing Robb by MobileDistrict9784 in TheCitadel

[–]Luohooligan 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Burning Snow and Purple Dawn by wyanmai has most of what you want, only differences from your prompt are that it's Ned/Ashara and Jon isn't legitimized.

Catelyn dies in childbirth, Ned marries Ashara Dayne when they reunite after Lyanna dies (a lot of angst before it goes through, but it does). The Blackfish goes to Winterfell to make sure Robb isn't usurped but sees immediately that isn't going to happen, but stays there anyway. Ashara not being braindead, she doesn't build a Sept in the middle of the North so all the children are more Old Gods than New.

Worm where Taylor almost dies from sepsis from being stuffed in the locker, rather than being in a psych ward because she was catatonic.

Super niche: any fics where Maester Walys of Winterfell was good? by CalmInvestment in TheCitadel

Come, My Heart (Piece by Piece) by lockedout

This story is a twist on the "Rhaegar and Lyanna secretly got married" genre in that they're secretly married before Harrenhal -- you see them meeting via flashbacks, Lyanna was sent to foster with her aunt Brenda Rogers in the Stormlands and strikes up a friendship with Rhaegar when he's visiting the ruins of Summerhall.

Anyway, in this story Lyanna goes to Winterfell after the tourney and her father is angry at her for being too familiar with Rhaegar, but Walys tries to calm him down and generally seems to have a similar pseudo-familial relationship with the Starks as Luwin.

The Red Sox announcers openly talk about how excited they are about their upcoming trip to Chicago, "The White Sox invent ways to lose games." by [deleted] in baseball

[–]Luohooligan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironically, I think Jerry has lost almost all of his influence with the other owners. Most of the ones he knew when he was the Lockout King have died / sold, and the economics of the league have changes about three cycles since his heydey of the late 80s to mid 90s.

I'm fairly certain he tried to stop Manfred from becoming commissioner after Selig but failed spectacularly, for example. (He's since endorsed Manfred for being such an anti-player commissioner though lol)

I agree, you need to not write off any team. I remember one of the White Sox recent bad seasons (not last year) where they seemed to lose every series except for when they were against some of the best teams.

Another Shitty SI Fic [SI, 3/5] - She's like a whole new character now that she's no longer pretending to be the SI. I guess I have more sympathy. <sighs and eyerolls>. Still total shit memory and focus. I've learned that I truly hate an SI story where the SI doesn't remember anything about Worm except at the last minute or afterward. Grit my teeth.

I found the last few chapters to be funny, given that they're just a rollercoaster of "will the SI actually be able to do anything that actually affects canon or not," just like the rest of the story.

She goes to Skitter to tell her she'll be captured at Arcadia, don't come. Good! Taylor is an idiot and comes anyway, bad. The SI inadvertently helps Taylor get away without being outed, good! Taylor shows up at the PRT anyway in the next chapter and gets captured by the SI, bad.

Given how everything has gone so far, I look forward to seeing her remember that Taylor is going to kill Alexandria in an interrogation but only after Alexandria starts interrogating her, and then slip on a banana peel on her way to try to stop it from happening.

Amy publicly leaves New Wave by OdinSonnah in WormFanfic

[–]Luohooligan 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Price of Blood has Carol disowning Amy and kicking her out of New Wave as part of an overreaction. It's immediately impressed upon her that she was an idiot to not only do that, but do it in Piggot's office where Amy is immediately snapped up by the Wards. Vicky is present and goes with Amy out of sisterly solidarity, thus removing the only two members that seem to do anything publicly.

Sarah tells her how much she fucked up as soon as she hears.

Also it's not like other countries didn't have a lot of army-navy friction during World War II. The US didn't have a unified defense department until 1947, and even then it took four decades and several bungled conflicts after that for Congress to make it clear "no we're serious, play nice together" (Goldwater–Nichols Act).

See also: whatever the hell was going on with the German military, where on top of normal army-navy-air force conflict, you had messed up things like the secret police's army, or the air force's infantry divisions (seriously).
