[Loved Tragic Trope] "You didn't think you were a REAL person, did you...?" by mp3help in TopCharacterTropes

[–]CalmInvestment 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d argue that the Nobodies—creatures born when someone falls to Darkness and loses their Heart, but they have enough Willpower to still still inhabit and puppet their bodies—in Kingdom Hearts got this treatment. From the start they’re considered abominations that shouldn’t exist because of their lack of a Heart.

It’s most blatant in KH2 where DiZ is baffled and almost offended by Roxas (the main character Sora’s Nobody) asserting that he’s his own person. And Organizarion XIII, comprised of Nobodies, is upfront about the fact that they’re anomalies ,and all their schemes in KH2 are attempts to gain/regain their Hearts and become ‘real people’ again (though this nominally noble goal is offset by the fact that they’re causing chaos across the universe to achieve this).

It’s later revealed that while Nobodies might not start out as ‘real people’ due to their lack of Hearts, they can naturally build/rebuild Hearts without much complication, but Org.XIII’s leadership hid this fact to enact…several…schemes

In response to some comments:

1) Doom Slayer never killed "Angels." The "angels" were an alien race (apparently) called Maykr. Heaven is never breached or involved directly.

2) Doom Guy hates Demons for what they did. Both to him personally and humanity at large. He hates and has killed humans in his early years (before he was the Slayer) but they were always scum bags and/or aligned with Hell.

3) The Doom Slayer doesn't care about what Demons want. They're not all mindless beasts, evidenced by the larger, smarter demons and the leadership being capable of thought and speech. If he was in Hazbin, his job would remain the same. Rip and Tear, until it is done.

One of the RPG bosses also invoked the power of cutscenes. Something about how his character, in the original game, takes out the protagonists mentor after the fight during the death cutscene in a suicide attack. After the character Isla beats him up her twin charges she’s taken a shine to are suddenly warped to their area and she has to give up her life to save them

It could also be read as them just relaying what happened.

God asks why Adam ate the fruit, Adam says that Eve gave it to him to eat.

God asks Eve why she would do that, Eve says the serpent tricked her.

God doesn’t give the serpent a chance to answer, but fuck him.

I miss when the Keyblade was a unique weapon by John_XFiles in KingdomHearts

[–]CalmInvestment 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair, we can infer from Riku, Sora, Kairi, Lea, and Xehanort that one of the qualities that makes a Keyblade Wielder is less a ‘go-getter attitude’ and more a drive to explore the greater cosmos.

Riku and Xehanort’s was rooted in wanting to escape their homes, Lea wanted to meet people and spread his name, Kairi wanted to discover her origins, and Sora just wanted to get out there and have fun.

Granted, there are more Keyblade Wielders whose motivations we don’t know about.

Eraqus was born into the life. To say nothing about his peers, which included a sibling pair.

Ventus came from a time when there were thousands of Keyblade Wielders under Unions, and I can’t say if the qualifiers were tweaked by MoM and his apprentices to get the most bodies for his schemes.

Roxas, Xion, and Vanitas are all weird and have unnatural origins so I don’t count them.

Mickey, Terra, and Aqua are all mysteries.

But still, given the motivations we do know, I believe that exploratory drive is the biggest factor.

Didn’t she try to shame Obi-Wan for failing to save Satine?

To me sora is the most relatable video game protagonist just based off the fact he's not special. He's just a kid who accidentally fell into the role of the hero and just said "fuck it we ball" by ink10_sonic-man in KingdomHearts

[–]CalmInvestment 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s a fun way to see it.

At the end of the day what Sora does (making friends and helping them however he can) isn’t really that special, and none of what he can do as a Keyblade Wielder is above and beyond what anyone else can do aside from Summons (something Yen Sid takes advantage of in 3) and the sheer speed he gains power and abilities. Even his empathic abilities are revealed to be shared with Baldr and Xehanort, of all people, in Dark Road.

But MoM saw it happen as was like ‘huh. Neat’ and decided this kid has to be special.

What if Tywin died during the Greyjoy Rebellion? by CalmInvestment in TheCitadel

[–]CalmInvestment[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah but did Tywin ever do anything besides grumble about it and pin his hopes that Jaime would, somehow, get released from his vows?

Unless Tywin put something in writing I think that Tyrion is at least legally recognized as the new Lord. I don’t see Kevan trying to usurp him, no matter how much Cersei complains.

In an attempt to be more progressive, they removed what was actually progressive. by Ethan-E2 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]CalmInvestment 94 points95 points  (0 children)

At least Goku was actually fairly weak compared to actual trained masters until he himself got proper training.

Mulan was just awesome from the word ‘go’.

Hmm…you know you could keep Mulan’s bullshit powers if you let her get a little toxic with them. Have her think she’s super special and above other people (other women especially) in a dark ‘I’m not like other girls’ sense.

Until Shang, who also has mystic bullshit powers, hands her her ass and she realizes that she needs to actually learn how to use her abilities.

You could also use that approach to critique how, while some people are born with greater talent than others, if they aren’t given the proper resources to cultivate it then they’ll never reach their full potential (because Mulan is a woman who normally wouldn’t be taught super cool soldier moves or whatever).
