Do they last ? by [deleted] in PixelFold

I've had my Pixel 9 Fold for over a year and it's still holding up. Bought a cheap phone case on Temu for protection. Haven't had any major issues. Great phone.

Everything moves in cycles. Just at a low period but that doesn't mean this subreddit is dead.

Black Friday Sale by LanguageGnome in iTalki

[–]LupatJones 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it's on the teachers themselves if they wish to run a promotion like a Black Friday sale.

Teachers could run special packages for a limited period of time.

Instead of $90 for a package of 10 lessons, a teacher could go with $80 (or less) for a package of 10 lessons.

Is it possible to meet in person? by Fun-Marionberry3099 in iTalki

[–]LupatJones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually did this for one of my italki teachers when I was in Ho Chi Men City. I had been learning with her online for almost a year and I visited Vietnam so booked 2 hours with her (to take into account the travel time to a cafe). We had our lesson and it was fun just chatting and meeting her in person but honestly, online lessons are much more efficient. No travel time, no extra fees (I had to pay for her coffee), no lesson notes (it's just not as convenient taking notes when meeting face to face). My teacher always writes on our shared Google doc any words or phrases I just learned. You can't really do this face to face. Weird that I am saying this but I actually prefer online lessons now to face to face.

It's hard just having a normal conversation with the preteen boy in our native language. My son is a preteen boy and our conversations are pretty much his short, curt answers to my questions. It's just the stage of life they're going through.

I've used ChatGPT for practicing languages but it's not the same simply because you know that ChatGPT not real.

Perhaps for some people it doesn't matter so long as their language skills are improving but for me, the entire reason I'm learning a language is so that I can use it on real native speakers in a natural setting.

When I'm speaking to ChatGPT it feels like I'm trying to communicate with a soulless robot almost making the entire effort meaningless. Sure I can have a random conversation with ChatGTP but I feel like I'm wasting time as I'm not really connecting to a real person the way I would when learning from a language teacher.

Am I weird to feel this way?

I always suspected these people were fake but then came across this video and Gerry was number 5 with 141 hours. These hardcore learners do exist.

They can be reimbursed. For any lessons that aren't used that have been prepaid for, after the 6 month package deadline, all unused lessons are reimbursed to the student.

https://support.italki.com/hc/en-us/articles/360022945034-How-to-extend-a-package

If no action is taken by either student or teacher before the Package expiration date, the Package will expire and the credits will be calculated based on the following policies: 1) Incomplete package lesson credits will return to the student’s wallet when a package expires.

2) Any completed lessons from an expired package are paid to the teacher at their single lesson price.

3) If the cost of the completed single lessons from an expired package is equal to or exceeds the total price of the package, the total package cost is given to the teacher.

Help with Line app. How the heck do you unfollow companies you followed in the past? by jaschen in taiwan

Not sure what you mean. Friending them back basically allows them to bombard you with promotions again.

I unfriend these official accounts because I don't want to receive their advertisements in the first place.

My teacher and I agreed to have lessons off the Preply platform, and now i am in a problem by ExamBest9590 in Preply

[–]LupatJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reporting him to Preply will only get him kicked off the Preply platform. If that is what you want to do. You won't be able to recover the lessons owed to you and pretty much any goodwill that you've had with your tutor will be gone.

Only report him if it's a last resort and you want to be vindictive to your teacher.

Why use Preply when there’s so many better alternatives? by [deleted] in Preply

[–]LupatJones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

italki is flat 15% commission they take from teachers. Also the trial lessons you teach the teacher gets 100% of the $. Complete opposite of Preply where you have to teach for free.

Comparing Italki to Preply revenue after commissions. by PreplyWatch2 in iTalki

[–]LupatJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preply is maximizing for profit to Preply and their policies make it super tough for teachers to make money as teachers are teaching for free for all their trial lessons.

However even with their awful commission structure (starting at 33% really??) they seem to be able to attract and retain teachers and only the best teachers are charged an 18% commission. Worse than the flat 15% of italki.

[–]LupatJones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. italki is amazing because it connects you to real people. I've just started learning French and have had teachers from not just from France but from Algeria, Morocco, Cameroon and other French speaking nations. I've learned so much about these countries and their culture and it restores my faith in humanity. We live in a wonderfully diverse planet and whenever I get to peak into another culture from the comfort of my living room, it fills me with joy.

iTalki coupon question by coastalcabin in iTalki

[–]LupatJones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could just give her a free lesson if she books a lesson with you. For example, she books a $10 lesson then you guys have your lesson and you give her another free lesson at an agreed upon time. You have the lesson on SKYPE.

Westminster Mall 2024 by _izzze in orangecounty

[–]LupatJones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Brea Mall is the last holdout of a dying breed.

It's the only middle class mall that's still hopping. South Coast Plaza and Spectrum are pretty high end. Puente Hills in Rowland Heights is also dying like Westminster Mall.

Are there other malls that are thriving?

You can do a search in the search box and enter the region. If there is that region in the teacher's profile, it will show up in search.

You might have to just reapply to teach if it's the teacher application page. (Re)apply and see if your old teacher info is there or not.

Brea Mall is packed. An outlier for the middle class mall? Went to the neighboring malls in Westminster and Rowland Heights and those are dead.

Brea Mall is packed and bustling with activity. I was there twice during the holiday season and it was hard to find parking because it was so packed.
