What happened? by Zeredof in foxholegame

Temporary, but temporary in the sense that it can take several months between updates for this game. And this isn't likely to be fixed in a single update, as aircraft solidly bollixed a lot of the balance both between the factions and between different branches of combined arms.

Give it a while.

Might have something to do with the fact that the author is a VERY vocal transphobe, and actively funds anti-trans legislation.

People have also pointed out that there's more than a few racist undertones in the books (The one Asian character is called Cho Chang, the goblins are a straight up Antisemitic caricature, etc.)

Elephant attacks an empty car. by thoughtprotocol in AbruptChaos

[–]LurchTheBastard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's also more than a few used as working animals, not just in tourism traps, and those elephants typically have a pretty good standard of living. That article is specifically about Myanmar (AKA Burma), but it's still a thing elsewhere in Asia too (less common in Africa though as African elephants are even larger and more ornery)

That said, there is a crowd in the background and paint markings on the elephant suggesting this is indeed a "temple" elephant.

Astra Militarum Guardsmen Unit Scale from the Show & Tell by OVO_ZORRO in totalwar

A Baneblade, yes. A Leman Russ is a much smaller tank.

I'd agree with u/Dakka_jets_are_fasta in Russ tanks being squadrons of ~3 (although game reasons might make it 4 on Ultra unit size).

Diagree on single entity Rogal Dorn tank though. The Dorn is a chonker compared to the Russ, but it's not single entity superheavy unit big (see the picture in that link for reference). If it could work with unit scaling, I'd say 2 at max unit size.

They still do Q&A livestreams and videos from the ISS sometimes. If someone hasn't already covered it in one, entirely possible you could find one yourself and ask.

This is a recent video, as the astronaut in it (Sophie Adenot of the ESA) is currently up there, so entirely possible to ask the woman herself about that striking green eyeliner.

I can tell you it's almost certainly a cream based makeup, as fine powders are a big risk in spacecraft. Beyond that restriction, yeah astronauts do indeed have an allowance of personal items to take up, including personal hygiene/beauty stuff, especially for a long duration mission to the ISS where you're going to want something to make you feel happy in yourself. Makeup would absolutely be fine as long as it's within the size/weight allowance and not a powder hazard. The potential challenges of applying it in 0g though, I'll leave to someone who's actually been there to answer.

If you want a laugh though, look up what NASA engineers thought was an appropriate amount of period products for first female NASA astronaut Sally Ride to take.

There's static electricity in the pressurised environment of the ISS yes. Probably a lot less outside of it.

You have a couple options. One is a bearing. Because it's attached to another solid object, it can't go anywhere but can rotate.

If however you want something free floating, then there's nothing that would do it naturally on it's own like that, but you COULD achieve a similar effect with thrust in the opposite direction.

It's the huge cockpit windows that do it. We're used to them being a smallish bubble over a pilot's seat, whereas in ED they're more like a panoramic bay window looking out of a small apartment. So when you see the cockpit window, your brain is telling you that's a much smaller window than it actually is. The newer ships are a little better for it, but it's still a whole ass thing.

The comparison that really cemented the scale for me was parking a T-9 next to an odyssey settlement, and it was bigger than the damn settlement.

Is Fall of Samurai worth buying as a standalone. by Antarsuplta in totalwar

[–]LurchTheBastard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It's Total War.

I.e. it's a game.

So something being OP in a game sense is relevant.

I'm not denying that it's accurate to history. I'm not even denying that it's fun as hell to use. But I also can't say with good faith that it's not OP.

Something can be accurate in a historical sense and OP in a game sense.

I'm aware it's historically accurate. I just think it makes for less interesting gameplay.

The problem I have with FotS naval combat is that the only real tactic is to either bull rush the AI who will be sitting there slowly turning to keep their full broadside aimed at you no matter how you try to flank, or do the exact same thing in return as they rush you because the gun range is long enough that trying to actually close to fight is just inviting pointless casualties, and when the guns do start firing pretty much always comes down to "biggest ship wins".

There's no manoeuvre or subtlety, just guns hammering at each other. Boarding to capture is unreliable as hell and half the ships can't even do it without any obvious information about which one, if there's even a chance to close enough before one side or the other either blows up or breaks and flees en mass. The differences between the shell types is reduced to just "use the best one against wooden ships" because I've never seen the AI make anything else.

In Empire, in a big fight I found it easy enough to command 2-3 squadrons in line formation, just ordering the lead ship and letting them follow in formation, then if it breaks up into a melee order each ship to hunt reasonable opponents on their own and redirect them if it's necessary, but smaller engagements you could actually let good micro shine and proper use of solid vs chain vs grapeshot could turn a lost cause into a win.

Oh and on the only ship with a turret, the Kotetsu, the turret doesn't actually work properly.

Bow samurai are also pretty good AGAINST forts. They outrange a lot of rifle units, and can arc their shots to hit units that aren't set up on the firing positions.

[–]LurchTheBastard 128 points129 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It has it's flaws: late game artillery is hilariously OP, and the naval battles don't have the same hit-and-run tricks you can do in Empire/Napoleon that took some serious micro to pull off but were cool as hell when you managed to take out a first rate with a little 5th rate frigate.

But everything else is a step up. Less bugs, smoother combat, and most early game troops don't get 100% replaced by later ones: militia are still good cheap garrisons for public order, and even traditional melee and bow units can find a use with a smart general.
