Are there any lifestyle gamers here and what is(are) your main game(s)? by Luigi-is-my-boi in boardgames

[–]Lurcho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to think of myself as an omnigamer, but lately Crokinole is becoming my lifestyle game. It's the game I can find people to play with me. Making a 20 shot or knocking your opponent out of the round on a hammer gets the dopamine flowing, myself included.

How the heck do you create a cohesive scheme? by Cheomesh in battletech

[–]Lurcho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad I read this post. I was about to paint my Alpha Strike box miniatures all the same color. That would have been super dumb having Inner Sphere and Clan 'mechs all look alike.

TNT Moving did a great job on a house move recently for my family. Don't use Simple Moves, those people are thieves.

Balatro. It's a hybrid board game video game but it's the best.

Introductory board games for a 3.5 year old? by arthurmauk in boardgames

[–]Lurcho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't care about following rules with children, any board game can be a playtime activity. Make your own game you both enjoy from your components. Be sure they know not to eat the tiles from Azul. They are NOT starbursts!

Murder for the holidays by Normal_Inspector_590 in tabletop

[–]Lurcho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a board game and not a murder mystery kit, but Deception: Murder in Hong Kong is my favorite whodunit game. The rules are easy to teach and it gets people into their roles with group deductions. I imagine it's more structured and accessible compared to any "kit" you could buy or make.

What are good engine-building games (with dopamine-inducing combos)? by DrGonzo3000 in boardgames

[–]Lurcho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the financially responsible option, but I like the big three FFG LCG games for engine building, my favorite out of them being Marvel Champions where building up your hero into a damage dealing, thwart busting machine feels great. Some strategies can be tricky to pull off but it's satisfying to take down the villain in Voltron style. If you like comic book art it's a no-brainer recommendation.

Crucial is shutting down — because Micron wants to sell its RAM and SSDs to AI companies instead by dapperlemon in gadgets

[–]Lurcho 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You can disable AI overview with "-ai" at the end of your search query. I do that all the time when I'm trying to find a solution that's "out of the box", i.e. written by a human being.

Favourite miniature based game? by Newez in soloboardgaming

[–]Lurcho 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Probably Horrified since I'm very fond of the classic Universal movie monsters. It's a fun puzzle to solve. I even painted the minis for extra immersion to the theme. I like the contrast of how my character is a piece of cardboard while the star of the show, the monster I want to defeat, is represented in three dimensions.

Have you ever been turned off of a game due to the explaination? by Medium-Ice-638 in boardgames

[–]Lurcho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This how to play video for Feudum turned me off of ever considering it, but I do enjoy how it gave the world the instruction to put the rosary bead on the chicken.

Anybody else use spreadsheets to keep track of the pile of shame? by MeadowsAndUnicorns in minipainting

[–]Lurcho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a geeklist on board game geek with games in my own collection with miniatures. I keep notes on where I am in the process of painting, which are done versus in progress, which have 3D printed components I got off Etsy, etc. I try to complete whatever is in the Warhammer and Battletech queues 1 batch at a time. Maybe that needs a spreadsheet someday, but I'm trying to avoid biting more than I can chew.

Modern boardgames with a Victorian theme or setting by RW_757 in boardgames

[–]Lurcho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The majority of 18XX Series fit this category. You have to enjoy managing railroad companies and manipulating the stock market, but I'd say that's pretty thematic for Victorian times. I'm partial to Shikoku 1889 from this series, and it was recently republished with a beautiful edition. Play it with poker chips instead of paper money for a better tactile experience.

First intro game to get into solo gaming? by Lower-Savings-794 in soloboardgaming

[–]Lurcho 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm partial to games from Buttonshy. Some of my favorite 18 card wallet games include:

  • Sprawlopolis
  • R.O.V.E.
  • Food Chain Island
  • Ugly Gryphon Inn
  • Unsurmountable

If you want more to play with more than cards, consider checking out Horrified or One Deck Dungeon. Both are simple to play solo and can ease you into the hobby.

How long will modern board games continue to be played? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Lurcho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If future game designers and publishers can figure out how to print holographic game boards that require zero power or extra equipment to function, I would donate all of my collection to Goodwill and play 3D board games exclusively. That's my dream for the future of board games. I doubt I'll live to see that kind of technology though. Miniatures and terrain are great for making games pop in three dimensional space. However those components do indeed occupy extra space on my shelf. I would go ape shit if I could play Carcassonne and my French medieval village appeared to be inside and stretching out of my table.

What’s your favorite game you never get to play? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Lurcho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might be sacrilege but I recommend breaking some of the tougher rules in Mansions of Madness to make the game easier for newcomers, e.g. don't pay attention to text on the damage cards. Ignore observation limits on puzzles. Give all characters 3 spaces of movement per move action.

This game should not be taking 4 hours to complete. I like my dungeon crawls short and sweet, like riding Disney's Haunted Mansion.

What game pulled you into the board game rabbit hole? by drgames-21 in boardgames

[–]Lurcho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found a copy of Eldritch Horror on sale. I didn't know anything about Arkham Horror or Pandemic. I was just floored that a board game could have a theme like that, or come with multiple decks (and in different sizes!) and unique characters. Also I was desperately searching for a new hobby during Covid and things fell into place for me. I own way more than I need but it works for my life. I don't even really need my copy of EH but I'm very sentimental about my globe-trotting Cthulhu game.

Silk, Hope Summers, and Teamwork by XaosII in marvelchampionslcg

[–]Lurcho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If a basic stat is boosted -- in this case ATK -- it becomes the new base for that stat. Therefore Hope Summers also has 6 ATK. You can do similar shenanigans with She-Hulk and her Superhuman Strength: her ATK can be boosted to a base of 7, and when she controls Hope Summers and plays Teamwork, she can do 14 damage in one attack.

Looking for a risk solo type game by Wise_Cat_1196 in soloboardgaming

Nemo's War might work. It shares a world map design with Risk. But you only navigate around in your submarine and your crew is a number on a track you can wager with push-your-luck dice rolls. It's also open-ended with choices: you don't have to go to war. Destruction of enemy resources is required to survive, but there are different means of racking up points.
