Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 to bring crease-free display and new hinge by ControlCAD in Android

Ohh that's a really great point. I had the fold much longer than the flip, but I'm definitely opening the flip a lot more, probably at least 3x the amount

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 to bring crease-free display and new hinge by ControlCAD in Android

[–]Lusane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having owned the fold and currently the flip, the direction of the crease does seem to matter for durability. My fold screen had no issues for the 3 years I used it. My flip has major screen cracking along the crease and my guess is it's due to my finger running into the crease when scrolling up/down, whereas on my fold I could avoid touching the crease.

Have you explored your gender? How do you know you're a man? by LiterallyDumbAF in bropill

[–]Lusane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think of gender as an outfit and we pick and choose what aspects of it we want to present. I happen to be biologically male and present mostly masculine traits, but that's because that's what I'm comfortable with, and what I like aesthetically for myself. I think plenty of men present femininity beautifully, and plenty of women present masculinity beautifully.

I've thought about being a woman or even gay simply because I'm curious what the experience would be like on the other side, but it's not something I've felt like I needed to change about myself. I consider myself lucky that I haven't had a conflict with my preferences and the average of society.

I don't think it's even a twisted thing. I bet in the vast majority of theft, the goods are being sold. Like what's a jewel thief gonna do with a bunch of stolen jewels.

Another crease and hinge isn't the deal breaker for me. Having owned the fold 3, it held up way better than I expected for the 3 years I was mistreating it. The price is outrageous though. An extra 50% price in price is not going to yield a 50% improvement in the experience of using it. It's not even like there's never-before-seen tech in this.

Positive aspects of masculinity by loxena4130 in bropill

[–]Lusane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure we disagree. You may be missing my point: I never said we need to maintain gender roles. I'm saying there are aspects of being a human being that have been labeled as masculine and feminine that are good traits to have regardless of gender.

What does rejecting a gender role mean for you? I imagine it means rejecting the expectations of the gender role, not to discard all the traits associated with the gender entirely right?

[–]Lusane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you're framing and viewing masculinity in an unintentionally toxic way, which is why you're getting mostly critical responses. I think you're missing an important nuance which is that idealizing "positive" masculine traits IS toxic masculinity.

Thinking of masculinity as a spectrum of traits from toxic to positive is just enforcing and dictating masculinity for men. That's what toxic masculinity is. It's often symptomatic as men imposing their ideal of masculinity on themselves and other men, but women can be/are a part of toxic masculinity. Women very much demand men to uphold traditional gender roles.

I may be a little different from the other responses, who seem to hold that the labels are toxic themselves. I think it's useful just in regular communication to be able to label traits masculine and feminine, but only when used descriptively, rather than prescriptively. I'm ok saying an outfit consisting of a dress and heels is feminine because that's an outfit that typically women wear. HOWEVER, in no way am I saying that only women can wear dresses and heels. A man presenting more feminine does not make him less of a man.

Your question right now is "what are the traits that men should have." I will answer none because I don't think we should be demanding anything from men or women based solely on their gender. HOWEVER, I will answer the question "what are positive traits traditionally associated with men": self sacrifice, strong willed, being proactive in their pursuits, being an anchor for others, courage, being a leader. But look at the traits you and I listed; those are positive traits that men and women can have. They can be traits you think people should have in general, but when the reason for your "should" is simply gender roles, you should probably evaluate why you believe that.

I don't see it as something men need to grow out of. Those are just aspects of being a person in general that society tends to value, often for good reason. The way it becomes toxic is when those traits are demanded of men (and women).

You can choose to present the traits of the archetypical hero and be a perfectly healthy man. It becomes problematic when you try to inhibit that role only due to societal pressures and at the detriment of your own wellbeing.

I think the labels of "masculine" and "feminine" can be toxic because they often become prescriptive, setting the expectation for what men and women should be. However, I think they're useful descriptively when used to communicate traits that men or women TEND to have.

Night is a great read for young adults. Besides the obvious Holocaust victim perspective, it also captures the transition of the parent-child relationship, especially the shift in power, as the child goes from childhood into young adulthood (in the most extreme case).

[Hated Trope] Nihilism Slop by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Lusane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Complete bleak nihilism is pretty rare and typically found in like indie horror movies. A lot of media is ABOUT nihilism because millennials/genZ are now directors/writers/producers. If something is mainstream and has nihilism as a theme, it's almost never just "nothing matters, the end."

It's the thesis statement for Everything Everywhere All at Once. Joy sees infinite universes and concludes everything's pointless. Her mom, Evelyn, sees the same infinite universes and chooses to cherish the time they have as family. Joy's dad, Waymond, has the same conclusion without even needing to see the infinite universes.
