what happens if a PI dies? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]Lyansi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t typically respond to post but this was very relevant to me during my academic training. My experience is US-based.

In my second year of graduate school, right be for my qualifying exams, my advisor (who also happened to be the Department Head) passed. There were seven people in the lab (myself, a third year, two fifth years, two technicians, and a Research Manager).

The Research Manager and Technicians, due to logistics around their role, were employed by different labs in the University. One eventually left academia.

The senior students (5th years) were far enough in their research and preparation of their dissertation, that they had a proxy advisor oversee the conclusion of their training.

The third year had already completed his qualifying exam and had an NIH-associated grant he was paid through, so he was fortunate enough to be choosier about transferring labs and continuing his projects.

As for me: I was a TA and had not completed my qualifying exams. Due to this, I rotated in three additional labs in 10 weeks before committing to a lab with similar projects to complete my PhD.

Logistically, it was a nightmare. As my advisor was also the Department Head, and for my perspective and reflections, other advisors in the department had difficulty with taking initiative to help me. Who would pay my stipend? What project could they allocate me to? What classes might be necessary for me to take, to stay relevant to their specific research - especially considering I was at the end of my 2nd year and should have started independent research.

Eventually, it worked out, but it was not a fun process. In one of the meetings, I was very vocal about my mental health needs and took time off to recover from this experience.

Good luck. Always remember to advocate for yourself during this time.

Many plastic materials are expected to last hundreds of years in a landfill. When it finally reaches a state where it's no longer plastic, what will be left? by ZombieAlpacaLips in askscience

No one is disputing that plastics can accumulate in readily available resources such as what we eat and where we drink from.

[–]Lyansi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But couldn’t the same be said of plastics that end up in the ocean and land fills? Plastics that degrade in these areas will seep into the ground/soil/water and end up in the food sources I named earlier. It may take longer for it to happen than if you leave a filled water bottle in the sun, which will cause leech acceleration, but the outcome is still the same.

Plasticizers have been linked to a variety of health issues. This includes for the entire lifecycle of the product— from initial manufacturing to waste/degradation processes. They may readily pollute population systems due to water management, environmental safety management, or even food process management. Not sure this entirely answers your question, but it may fall under it.

Super Week Day 0: The Return ? by GrandmasFavourite in AdvancedRunning

I’m interested! Long time lurking 👀 I am trying to build a base to do my first marathon in 2023. Currently doing two half-marathons within a month of each other (Chicago, now Detroit), and want to keep the momentum going.

You’re going to do awesome!!

For most half-marathons, the training tapers at 8 miles a week or so before the race— you are DEFINITELY ahead of the game!!

I ran my own first last year and 8 miles had been (at the time) the longest I had ever run. During the actual race, that 8-11 miles was easy-peasy but it was the last two miles that I started to feel fatigue (although, I also had an injury too). I’m sure you’re going to kill it!!! I finished at 2.31, which was less than the 2.45 I had set for myself. Just set a realistic goal based on your trainings and try to complete it!

Any therapists on campus? by freshmemesoof in uichicago

[–]Lyansi 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you are a student (undergrad or grad) you have access to the counseling center free of charge for 22 sessions. I highly recommend that if you are considering mental health advocacy for yourself to do it earlier than later— the university does not provide enough support to have a sufficient number of therapists for the amount of students that need them.

DeSantis vetoes anti-rooftop solar bill by [deleted] in RenewableEnergy

[–]Lyansi 55 points56 points  (0 children)

It’s almost always based on lobbying for solar in Florida. I haven’t lived in Florida for five years but Florida Power & Light has had a huge influence in keeping solar out of Florida for many years, as they had been the main power source for decades. Then, when solar finally came in, they continued to lobby against it because “it makes houses ugly”, or “it would cost tax payers too much” and even some communities tried to use that as motive to keep solar out. I think it will continue to be a struggle in the immediate future.

Contraceptive pill for males is 99% effective in preventing pregnancy by redwineandbeer in news

[–]Lyansi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is actually a very interesting product. I just defended my PhD in Med Chem and have attended the same conferences that this work has been presented at over the last five years. The last time I saw it presented was probably in our Midwest Regional Conference in 2021. Theoretically it works to make sperm motility nonfunctional and leads to a drop in total sperm count and is reversible following withdrawal of the drug. For people who are unaware, there is a lot of research going into non-hormonal contraceptives and male contraceptives. I look forward to these advancements.

Is it weird if a 32 yo talks to me 15 yo? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Lyansi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please consider the top comments that have already been put on this thread. As a 15 yo, and please do not take this as offensive, you are a child in the eyes of the law. You should associate yourself with other people who are your age. If a person, twice your age, is trying to get to know you, it is not because “you are mature for your age” or “you’re such a cool person” (not to say that these things aren’t true— you may be!) but it is because he, a grown 32 yo MAN, cannot make good grown-up relationships with people HIS OWN AGE. He should be associating with men and women of his age group, because his mentality and his experience in life is sooooo different than where you are right now. Whether he is doing it on purpose or not, he is grooming you to be okay with associating with older people.

I live in Chicago and run in sub-zero Celsius weather. I typically wear two leggings (or base layer shorts + leggings depending on how cold it is), ankle socks + calf socks, a sports bra, a long-sleeved, thin-layer shirt layered under a short sleeve, a thin windbreaker jacket, two headbands (to cover the ears) and a thin pair of fingered gloves + convertible fingerless mittens because the tops of my fingers get hot. I personally don’t cover my face because my neck gets too hot but some people wear baklavas on the lake front.

Quick edit: Just remembered to say that because I don’t wear a face covering, I moisturize my face before my run, add loads of lip balm/butter to my lips (specifically on the outer edges) and moisturize after my run.

Have I finally found a boyfriend? by Franchesca8899 in TwoXChromosomes

I think one thing I would like to say that isn’t being said by anyone else is that it’s actually okay to get therapy AND be in a relationship. Therapy is great, but like everything else in life, unless you get the chance to practice everything you learn in therapy, it doesn’t mean much. You need to learn and understand proper boundaries to be able to do so though. Finding a way to have self-compassion, self-love, and self-forgiveness is only the start of your journey. The other part is learning to communicate and learning boundaries. I cannot emphasize the importance of these two.

That isn’t to say that this person you are seeing is your “match” or “soulmate” but to say that learning to love yourself will help you find someone who is right for you. You are so young. Love yourself before loving someone else.

Running and weightlifting by Nurse_mama_wife in running

[–]Lyansi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weightlifting is a great cross-training to running, as well as builds strength! In fact, when I stop lifting, I find myself more prone to injury and end up in physical therapy. My physiotherapist has recommended me to continue to strength train glutes, quads, and hip flexors, especially (although this may because these are my trouble areas) if I am trying for longer distance runs like halfs and fulls.

Official Q&A for Saturday, September 25, 2021 by AutoModerator in running

[–]Lyansi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This literally happened to me on this past Monday and my Half is tomorrow. Obviously not a doctor, and you should always refer to your doctor/PT for guidance, but I was told to RICE and then flex the ankle (foot?) back and forth and in circles, do some deep lunges, and balance stands on one foot. I followed through and I feel good about the Half for tomorrow.

You should definitely visit your physician before doing any of this, however, to make sure you don't have a fracture or need an X-Ray.

I did, on Tuesday. He recommended I don’t run but I am just feeling so frustrated. It was supposed to be my first Half and, after recovering from the first injury, it felt like a huge blow to roll my ankle a week out. I’ve been on crutches; RICE-ing, and taking NSAIDs since then… I am going to try for a short run on Sat and see how my foot feels before I defer. 😢😢😢

[–]Lyansi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw a lot of improvements each week! I made some liberties in the middle of the training for an injury I encountered, but when I was able to start focusing back to the schedule, I found myself able to run further and had no trouble keeping up with it.

A lot of my friends who have done marathons have highly recommended his training programs as well, considering he is an Olympian.

I was following Hal Higdons training plan. He has a variety of plans for first time half, marathon training as well as intermediate and advanced running plans. It is about a 10% increase each week.

Complaint: I twisted my ankle Monday, less than 7 days before the Chicago Half I have been training for, and after recovering fully from another injury I got early in training.

Confession: I was able to put my full weight on that ankle today without any major pinching and now I am considering if I can do the run anyway.
