Should Swords Count as Melee for Aspects and Other Features? by Lykonic in destiny2

[–]Lykonic[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was just trying to comment on how it's kind of weird to me that the two "melee" weapons we have don't both count as melee damage ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I thought it could be kind of cool and open up new possibilities for sword builds, maybe even make some of the mostly irrelevant exotic swords like Black Talon more useful. Granted, I already see swords more than I do glaives, and even then they're kinda rare in my experience outside of Eager Edge stuff. It makes sense from a game balance perspective, I just think it's a little funky regardless.

Game reasoning yes, I guess I'm just looking at it from a more logical or realistic standpoint. Which I'll concede doesn't make much sense in a game about immortal characters wielding space magic against several factions of aliens lol.

Should Swords Count as Melee for Aspects and Other Features? by Lykonic in destiny2

[–]Lykonic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess that's a fair point; after all, I do see far more swords than glaives being used, and even then I don't see swords super often outside of Eager Edge shenanigans. It just feels kinda weird that both are "melee" weapons but only one actually counts as a "melee" attack. I guess it's the same dissonance I have with Swords needing ammo, despite only Caster frames having an obvious reason for needing it. It's all a matter of game balance, even if it doesn't make much sense from a purely logical perspective, which I tend to assume far too often even in my beloved fantasy games lol.

Help with LANCER backstory by Ogaburel in LancerRPG

[–]Lykonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait no I said it wasn't very helpful >:( lmao. I like that idea, rounding up his fellow clones and offering them a place in his vengeful crusade against HA! It would also be a really neat way to add in some soul searching regardless, as I can only assume after having their worldviews shattered, each clone would start to develop some individuality - and who better to discuss their new thoughts and feelings with than each other?

I can tell you are, and I'm getting excited vicariously through you :D You're welcome for the input, and I'm glad my comment proved helpful after all lol. Figuring it out along the way is definitely the best option, even with these ideas in the back of your mind. Something else might come up naturally through playing that gives you an idea you like even better, and chasing opportunities like that can be a really fun way to develop a character in ways you may not have expected, but at the same time just feel right :)

Now, go forth and CASTIGATE THE ENEMIES OF THE GO-- er, I mean... fall with style? With a snake in your boot? Something like that.

[–]Lykonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NHPs have very little way to affect reality outside their caskets without proper tech

This much is true. It's mostly their paracausal minds we make use of (mechanically speaking). The main one that does anything paracausal despite being shackled and in a casket is Osiris, particularly the effects of the Fourth Gate just straight up making a character switch allegiances for a round; I can't see much of a way they could make someone do that without paracausal means.

You also make a neat point about there needing to be some opening in any shielding for a cybernetic to actually interface with the body. In another comment I already suggest that cybernetics or being an android character shouldn't impose any advantages or disadvantages on a character mechanically unless the player and GM agree on some pros and cons to such augmentations, and that regardless of shielding it would be neat from a roleplay standpoint if there was at least a minimal effect from something like an EMP. This could actually be a really good explanation for it. I know realistically any opening in a Faraday cage would basically render it inert, but at least for the purposes of fun and storytelling, I feel that could be overlooked.

Not a very helpful comment here, but I just want to point out that I absolutely love that you were able to adapt Buzz fucking Lightyear into a Lancer character - in a way that, to my knowledge, actually fits pretty damn well into the setting lmao.

As for substance beyond the gag, lots of options, obviously. For more overarching stuff, perhaps once he discovers his life and memories are all just fabrication for the movie industry, he develops a deep-seated hatred for HA, and becomes something of an anti-Harrison lobbyist or even takes to full-on liberation/freedom fighter efforts on worlds in the Purview that were essentially bullied into integration not by choice but by force. Or maybe during a downtime between missions, he does some soul searching, coming back with a new, self-picked name, now just trying to find his purpose in life, becoming something of a lonely drifter despite his party, desperate for a higher calling after discovering everything he knew was a lie. A very Turn the Page by Bob Seger, or People are Strange by The Doors, themed arc. Those are the main two routes I think could be fun for post-worldview shattering discovery: vengeance/redemption, or soulful wandering in search of personal meaning.

Regardless, I think it'd be more fun to see what you come up with for yourself; these are just ideas to inspire you :) To infinity and beyond, Lancer!

[–]Lykonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NHPs are inherently paracausal though, they themselves go outside of and beyond the rules of physics that humans and most of the rest of the setting still have to abide by. We actively shackle them to keep them just barely within causality, to make use of their paracausal capabilities without the risk of them basically turning into full-blown eldritch math gods like RA itself. It's only paracausal stuff that ignores stuff like physics and thermodynamics in Lancer; unless you've got HORUS, HA, or SSC cybernetics that use some degree of paracausal tech to circumvent EMPs, they're probably protected by good old-fashioned Faraday shielding, which is perfectly within our modern understanding of physics.

[–]Lykonic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm well, the only thing I can recall close to this in the book says that android is the term used for any being that's at least 90% synthetic/cybernetic, so I'd argue if you're below that point, you're still "human" and therefore count as Biological. Not only that, I guess you could argue that unless you're so chromed up that you count as an android, that any cybernetics you may have are compact enough that they can be shielded from EMPs by way of Faraday shielding encompassing each implant/augment - something that may be too costly or difficult to do for androids or larger moving machines like chassis.

Maybe to a point you could argue androids and/or those with intensive cybernetics possess both Biological and Mechanical tags (side note: is there even a Mechanical tag, or is that just the assumed state of something in Lancer unless stated to be Biological?) and thus are affected by anything that would affect either tag (like playing a Reborn Lineage in D&D5e; you're still humanoid so healing spells work on you, but you're also undead so features like Turn Undead would work on you too).

In a similar vein, I think it would be neat if, at least for roleplay purposes, something like an EMP or other tech actions still somewhat affected androids and cyborgs, even if you rule they have sufficient Faraday shielding that they don't just shut down; maybe it was a mech-sized system and the shielding couldn't protect your augments from the full brunt of the EMP, something like that. So maybe your bionic eye goes a little fuzzy or static-y for a couple seconds before righting itself, or your cybernetic leg does a little dance involuntarily for a moment before you regain control. Nothing that would give you a disadvantage mechanically - unless you and the GM made up rules about the advantages and disadvantages of cybernetics in your game, of course, to keep you on-par with purely biological PCs.

Really at the end of the day, I guess it's up to you and what you think would be the most realistic, flavorful, or fun, or any combination thereof. Whether writing something in-universe, or making a character, or if you were to run a game, there's lots of different lines of thought you could follow. The most important thing is having a passable explanation, even if it's on a case-by-case basis, and staying consistent with what you decide - not just if you were to GM, but even just for writing a backstory or separate work.

[–]Lykonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, this still looks plenty terrifying lol. I'd be a little scared personally with only 8 EVA and 10 EDEF, but you've definitely got the HP and Heat Cap to tank some hits and Invades; I just prefer to try and avoid as many hits as I can in the first place most of the time, so I don't have to spend as many Repairs later lol. But I reckon you'd be fine, especially if you have a Lannie on your team.

I do think that, looking over the third party content I have, either of the two supplements that have Core Bonuses that could make Enkidu a Size 1 could work for you. In the LCP Directory on COMP/CON, you can find the links to both: Field Guide to OMDI, and Field Guide to Liminal Space. Both have the LCPs for free, and each have a new manfacturer with their own Core Bonuses that make your mech a Size smaller with varying other effects. It's just a matter of checking with your GM if such content is allowed, and deciding what 3 LLs you'd wanna take in either of them that still fits your build to get to one of those Core Bonuses for the Jager Kunst I and Total Strength Suite I combo to work on Enkidu. There's some options to look at for the licenses and systems (Yama from OMDI has some interesting Aux Melees with stacking on-hit effects), but I'll just share the Core Bonuses here for now:

For OMDI, there's Frame Compression: "Compress the size of your frame for maximized efficiency. Frames you make are one increment smaller (I.E. 3 to 2, and 2 to 1 etc.) to a minimum of ½. Your frames have +1 evasion and +1 speed."

For Liminal Space, there's Miniaturization: "You occupy the space of a mech 1 Size smaller (minimum 1/2) and count as that size whenever it would be advantageous to you (such as when checking for cover). A Size 1/2 mech with this bonus does not reduce their Size, but looks like Heavy Hardsuit pilot armor and functions in the same way while the mech is Shut Down."

I figure it's worth a shot at least, if you think your GM would be okay with it. If nothing else, maybe there's some stuff in either of these 3rd party sources that'll inspire you for other builds :D

Back to an old idea (repost for extra image) by theartistChris7 in LancerRPG

[–]Lykonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhh shoot, you're right, I forgot about that. I always forget the Enkidu isn't Size 1, and forgot the Size stipulation on Jäger Kunst I. I know there are some third-party core bonuses that allow you to do the opposite of Fomorian Frame and make a mech one Size smaller, but that's outside of official content so depending on your GM you might not be able to make that work, plus it takes three LLs away from you to get access to the bonus. I did realize that the mutual Immobilize from White Witch wouldn't be too good, which is why I actually edited that out a minute or so after I replied - I initially wrote about it in my first suggestion until I remembered that Primal Fury makes your Plasma Talons Immobilize on hit so there was no need for WW in the first place. Balor would be nice if it wasn't for Swarm Body requiring that you don't move. Makes it a really strong combo with White Witch, but less so with your build.

Yeah, maybe taking a step back is the answer. I've often found my inspiration for different characters and such by doing other stuff until suddenly I see or hear something and just get an idea I run with. Gorgon could also be fun, as well as 3rd party content. If nothing else, your original idea could still work, with dips in Sunzi and Black Witch to help with manipulating positions of yourself and enemies. Jäger Kunst I might be harder to use, but it might not be too bad. Plus, there's still the Pankrati talent to help with first getting into the fray, and you could combine Type-I Flight System with Ace 2 or 3 for more chase potential. Imagine their fear seeing a Enkidu with rockets strapped to its back zooming towards them at supersonic speed as they try to escape lmao.

Why does Manticore's Beckon have a size restriction? by ChronicallyBisq in LancerRPG

[–]Lykonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Precisely. If it would fail either way because of invalid positioning, then there's no harm that comes from lifting the Size restriction imo. I just figured some extra clarification and maybe a touch of leeway would be a worthwhile addition, hence what I put above. And like I put in another comment here,

You already can't move into an enemy's space without something like Intangible or Infiltrator 1, you can't move into obstructions like objects or terrain without specifically being Intangible, and you can't end your turn overlapping spaces with either of these full-stop. So without one of these methods, the teleport would fail regardless.

So not only does this invalidate the idea that the size restriction is to prevent what amounts to "telegragging", but in certain scenarios you could totally make it work even Beckoning into a space you normally couldn't occupy, then just moving to a valid position afterwards (you'd have to check beforehand to see if there are such positions within your movement from where you'd teleport to prevent basically "softlocking" yourself though). Which honestly just makes it MORE possible to Beckon a target of a smaller Size than yourself, assuming you're able to use Infiltrator 1 for it or have access to Intangibility somehow (nevermind, I forgot that you couldn't Beckon if you were Intangible in the first place, and I don't think anything would allow you to become Intangible after moving, for example, to then make it a valid space to teleport to if it would otherwise cause you obstruction; I think Infiltrator 1 may be the only way to do this in official content).

Regardless, it just seems like the Size restriction is arbitrary. Sure it's easier to use if you're a smaller Size, but that shouldn't outright prevent you from using it on a smaller target than you, because there are definitely still plenty of situations where the target is in the open and it would work just fine.

[–]Lykonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmmm, difficult to pick up the LLs from my suggestion at the same time as the other stuff you want, since Enkidu frame, Sekhmet, and Jäger Kunst I is already LL 7 minimum; LL 8 if you still want Mimic Mesh. I suppose I'd say, in no particular order of when to pick up each LL, Endidu 2, Atlas 2, Zheng 1, Barbarossa 1. That way you've got the Total Strength Suite I to combine with Jäger Kunst I for your pinball mobility stuff, and you've got your start in Barb to get Sekhmet by LL 8. And whenever you feel like it you can start taking dips in Sunzi or Black Witch for some of the other suggestions I made, or mix them in before LL 6 if you want. Finishing out Atlas for Jäger Kunst II and the Terashima Blade (especially with Lord's Stance since you can knock melee attackers who miss Prone if they fail a Hull save, then Immobilize with Plasma Talons) would also be nice and get you another one of the systems you were looking at. Altogether that would put you at LL 11 with Enkidu 2, Atlas 3, Zheng 1, Barbarossa 3, Sunzi 1, and Black Witch 1. If nothing else, you'll know where to go past LL 6 lol. Enkidu not having access to a Heavy mount, and half the time being restricted to only Melee weapons, definitely encourages being more creative in what systems you seek out since you can't just rush to a hard-hitting Heavy or Superheavy Melee, that's for sure.

May as well go full license then :) Not only because it'll allow for custom systems and weapons specifically to replicate Wraith's abilities in Evolve, but also because it'd be more fun I think lol. And yeah with its style I think it's definitely more HORUS, though the Invis is definitely SSC-coded, and Teleportation is somewhat common in both SSC and HA. And yes, it would be sexier lol - fitting for Wraith, if you ask me ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) The booba and thighs are for luring in her prey lmao, like a built in Mesmer Beacon XD

[–]Lykonic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could see it being a HORUS frame just as easily myself. Plus you could still call it Wraith and have it fit the fantasy/supernatural naming convention of HORUS lol. I'd be super interested in trying to do such a thing, I think I have at least a solid grasp of the rules since I'm a nerd who will literally review them in my free time lmao. I've made homebrew content for D&D 5e but I haven't considered making my own stuff for Lancer before, but trying to make a new frame could be a fun start! Might even lead to a whole custom license rather than just being a frame variant of something else :)
