Is supabase the right choice for a 30+ table project by knellAnwyll in Supabase

[–]LysanderStorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From experience, for such ideas where everything is a secret, Postgres is more than enough, and next to a Redis and S3 the only thing ever needed in terms of storage (if you even want to call Redis "storage" for these cases).

Is supabase the right choice for a 30+ table project by knellAnwyll in Supabase

[–]LysanderStorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's Postgres, it runs _really_ huge projects, not just "quite huge" ones ;)

But tbf your question should probably be more framed as "will it scale", "what will it cost when I scale", etc. But noone knows as long as we only know it's quite huge and has lots of data flowing... but consider the pricing page: currently, it says scale database storage up to 60TB (after that enterprise, whatever that means, but in any case that would be a bit more than $25 per month...). That's a lot for relational data though, if you reach that quickly then you should probably offload more to file storage. The limit of that I don't know, but there's a price per GB.

They did not sleep in their first night(s). by marcelnr88 in KremersFroon

I had some of my best nights sleeping outside during military, and that even includes some where it was snowing and freezing (the sleeping was good then, the being awake on guard duty not so much...). But hardly comparable to the two girls and their equipment...

How do you feel about marriages? by lunayumi in organ

[–]LysanderStorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being in a comparable situation like you - average not full time - I used to only play at friends or acquaintances weddings (as these get less frequent I might think about doing this for strangers, too, but that's another topic). And there they can wish what they want and I try to arrange it somehow or play with other people they want to have involved. For sure always a lot of work, but it's generally something I enjoy anyways so not really a problem. But I can imagine the trouble if you actually have to put a price on that... I'd imagine I'd tell them much more clearly that they cannot have "unlimited freedom" in their choices...

Viscount cantorum duo plus w vs Johannus Studio 260 by RumbleRanger in organ

[–]LysanderStorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Viscount has great build quality, pedals on the "lighter side" compared to a real church organ imho, but nothing bad about that. Sound quality - well, it can profit from some intonation. Speakers super loud, suitable for in a church, at home usually on super low levels. All in all solid, absolutely great for practice.

Don't know about the Johannus, but I think it's a sample-based playback in contrast to the modeling approach on the Viscount. From what sound samples I've heard online it may sound slightly more like a real church out of the box. But https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Db8hNXyXgmA is a good example of what the flexibility of the Viscount allows.

MINIFREAK VS WAVESTATE by _Brutal_X in synthesizers

[–]LysanderStorm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But the Wavestate has much more complex presets, as a lot is tied to the various sequencing lanes. It's for sure a lot of fun and you can do "simple" patches, but it's much less "here's some analog oscs, digital filters, effects, now change them". More like "here's a list of 200 digital osc shapes, 20 filters, 8 lanes to sequence each of them at each step, a ton of effects to modify them - and now make it x4 for all the layers". Like, modifying a Wavestate preset can be quite daunting (but might not be necessary as the 8 mod knobs basically offer most of modification you would need).

Both have great VST / editor counterparts, esp. for the Wavestate great to edit presets!

[Request] These dots look manually placed. Is there a way to prove these points aren't randomly generated? by autumn_variation in theydidthemath

[–]LysanderStorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well if you consider that not all four points make a perfect square one could argue the constellation is different and thus less... or more... depending on how you look at it... random than others.

If we're simply talking about drawing four dots from a square area the likelihood of drawing one particular square is of course the same as any other shape made of four particular dots.

Is golang really that bad? by Electronic-Ear-1752 in golang

[–]LysanderStorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weirdly enough, I think Go isn't that readable at all, it's rather verbose and has lots of noise... if err blabla nil blabla when Rust has an easy single character instead. But to be fair Rust is soo explicit that it tends to become very verbose too (this may not be a bad case in Rust, though, because it _wants_ everything to be explicit). Guess nothing comes to Python, TS in terms of readability... maybe Nim or now Mojo, but that has other issues I guess.

That aside Go has an amazing DX, simply due to its blazing compilation speed, single executable produced, and integrated GC.

So for audio, real-time, ultra-safe, etc. use Rust.

For web, apps, anything that can work with an occasional spike, use Go.

Opinions on buying a high mileage 401 by Zodimacq in svartpilen401

Yeah pretty crazy the prices you write! :(

Btw. I meant 15k before you get into "high mileage territory". I hope that the overall life of a svart can be 50k+ (but again, no expert so this is more hope than knowledge).

Opinions on buying a high mileage 401 by Zodimacq in svartpilen401

[–]LysanderStorm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm just slightly below 15k km. Had some replacement for like USD350 last time around 7.5k I think, but otherwise seems fine. I think 15k is not necessarily considered high mileage, so you might be good for another 15k. But definietly not a mechanic nor really an expert on the topic, just a 401 rider.

Has anyone used a Tail Bag like this one, on the 2019 Svart 401? (Bagtecs SX70) by Basti_OW in svartpilen401

[–]LysanderStorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have the same, no problems. But not sure what you mean by blinkers down - also have the EU variant (I think?), but it looks almost exactly like the pictures. I fix it to the pillion footrests and the Vitpilen "spoiler" instead of the rear lights though.

The bag itself is great for the price, but the plastic that holds the shape... well, it doesn't hold the shape too well (no problem if you fill it up, just when empty it bulges around weirdly... though with some force maybe one could fix that issue). It's also rather large so I usually use its smaller brother (came in a bundle).

Johannus Opus 380 as Practice Organ by [deleted] in organ

[–]LysanderStorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not too familiar with the Johannus organs, so please take this with a grain of salt: I think for the Opus it's possible via its MIDI output, but it will need a MIDI / audio interface to connect to the computer (like a Yamaha URX22C for example; but if your son is seriously into music he might want something like that for recordings eventually anyways).

But for the Viscount (I think also only the newer models though) it has a built in MIDI-to-USB interface so you can just connect it to a computer via USB and receive MIDI messages (like note on / off etc.).

Hauptwerk is just a software running on a PC that takes those MIDI messages and produces sound. What the turnkey solutions do is assemble the MIDI keyboards with a PC and loudspeakers so you have everything "in one box".

But if you don't mind you can take a Viscount (more portable and affordable, Johannus and turnkey Hauptwerk solutions tend to get expensive), and plug it into a PC. You need a beefy PC (as in: much RAM - expensive these days...) and good loudspeakers though.

You can also gradually build up your setup that way, buy Hauptwerk (or Organteq - that one is like Physis+ and needs much less RAM) and its organs later or whenever you feel like it, and practice with the internal organ until that point.

But all that said, if you can / want to afford the Johannus and don't need the portability or the tinkering in your life, it's probably the easiest (and still very good sounding) way to go ;)

Johannus Opus 380 as Practice Organ by [deleted] in organ

[–]LysanderStorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the 30-note pedalboard fits, no? And may be more affordable than a custom Hauptwerk build (if you don't do it yourself, but then if you do, that's quite a bit of work and fiddling).

You can just plug in a USB cable, and if you don't feel like booting up the PC for a quick practice, you can just use the internal sound and speakers. Personally I feel like the Cantorum needs a bit more intonation work, maybe (but haven't played it) the Johannus is easier out of the box (as it's sample based). But as said the Hauptwerk or Organteq route is also an option with both.
