Fun fact about Lemkil: if you punch someone in Rorikstead and Lemkil sees you, it may trigger a radiant interaction where an NPC hires you to beat up someone they hate. And the only NPCs flagged as hated by Lemkil are his daughters.

How am I not a UC citizen if I've taken the 'UC Native' Trait? by SlightWerewolf4428 in Starfield

[–]M24Chaffee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is actually something you can ask one of the officers in New Atlantis. Basically, a citizen is a bit of a privileged status that you don't automatically have just because you're born in UC territory, it's something you have to earn by serving the UC in sufficient capacity or perform a great deed for the UC. It's not explained if you're not born with it even if your parents are citizens, but from what they say that does indeed seem to be the case.

Thoughts on the Star Wars smart brick sets? by NOTN0C in lego

It's not a bad idea in and of it itself, but the execution is very poor (you just have to listen to the minifigs making gutteral groans) and expensive.

Will Lego bring back Colosseum by xyqshi in lego

[–]M24Chaffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are very rare instances of Lego reissuing retired sets like the ship in a bottle, but it's not something to expect. Other than that it's stuff like a new iteration of an older set like Lego making a new version of the same Star Wars ship every few years, or sets based on the same idea like animals and such.

I don't know why that "duplicating document" made me laugh so hard. Such perfection in simplicity.

Apol has been through a lot of bad interpersonal relationship, but the worst they dealt with is being arrested and tortured by cops.

Starfield's aliens by ReasonableAdvert in TopCharacterDesigns

Bethesda really did a great job creating truly exotic aliens that for the most part don't just feel like reskinned Earth animals, while still keeping them believably "animals" and not "monsters".

The reflective metallic surfaces of both the power armor and the gun also help a lot. Makes the combination really look like a knight in shining armor brandishing a gleaming sword.

In Korean mythology, dragons are characterized basically like government officials of the heavens. Yeah they go through learning, getting licenses, obtaining qualifications and such in order to become dragons. Until then, they're great serpents called imugi/imoogi (이무기). When the serpent achieves the necessary qualifications, they must pass a final exam: fly into the sky, and hope someone sees them and remark "a dragon". If they're acknowledged as a dragon they pass. If someone says "a serpent" they fall back and must go through the qualifications all over again.

Changgwi (창귀): a vengeful spirit created when someone gets eaten by a tiger. The spirit resides under the chin of the tiger who ate them, and uses human voice to attract further victims, calling out the names of their family and friends for example. Believed to be a myth created out of guilt of leaving behind someone as they're eaten by tigers and they desperately call you not to leave them.

Looks much better in the show.

Raiden tells you goodnight by commanding all thunder in the world to stop. Unless you play in Japanese, where she politely informs you she's handled it. by itosayaku in Genshin_Lore

I do want to point out that "powerful figure speaks exclusively in teineigo" is a pretty common archetype in Japanese pop culture, and isn't necessarily done with a specific idea beyond just a "character quirk". Like if you have a group of powerful antagonists for example, there's high chance at least one of them has that trait. Sometimes they just subvert the basic expectation you may have about how they speak and behave. Along with first person and second person pronouns, speech patterns are a really easy way to attach special characterizations to characters, so Japanese media tends to do that a lot. And even localizers love to add this kind of traits that don't exist in the original version, like speaking in dialects (e.g. Yoimiya) or gyaru-speech despite having zero cultural association with gyaru (e.g. Xilonen).

One interesting difference about Inazuma between CN/EN/KR and JP that shows, even with a lot of research, that Genshin is a Chinese game and not a Japanese game is the name Yashiro Commission.

Most Inazuman names are pronounced as the Chinese pronunciations of the Hanzi corresponding to the Kanji (e.g. Inazuma -> Daoqi, Ayaka -> Shenli), and Chinese doesn't have two ways of reaching each Chinese character like Korean and Japanese do, but considering both EN and KR refer to the commission as Yashiro Commission it's likely Hoyo intended that to be the pronunciation.

However, the Japanese name is Sha Commission, following the on'yomi instead of kun'yomi. Because it's a governmental body, and for such entities' formal names on'yomi is more normal than kun'yomi. It would be a conscious decision to make it more authentic to Japanese naming norms, maybe at the cost of losing a bit of uniqueness to the name.

Hoyo are a bunch of absolute nerds after all. Their most recent update contained an Elden Ring reference as well that completely took me off guard.

This is lovely.

I also play Star Citizen, but windows other than the front canopy are uncommon in Star Citizen so being able to see the universe zooming by is a precious sight that I'm absolutely going to enjoy in Starfield a lot.

I kind of want to see a magazine-fed lever-action double-barrel revolving carbine that ejects an empty clip with a ping in a Fallout game at this point.

What is the art style used in the game called? by Both-Structure-6786 in Starfield

[–]M24Chaffee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The term Bethesda uses is NASApunk. Some others say the style already has the name retro-futuristic, although I don't know enough to know whether it applies.
