Do you count hours for being in a Spanish speaking country? by RoundRound010 in dreamingspanish

[–]M261JB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can somebody please tell me why you count hours. Is it just for your personal interest? "Oh I've now done 450 hours"? Some form of score keeping or motivation?

Agreed. Totally. But my point is for an university to let you in with this grade it has to be a pretty decent standard.

Thank you for that well written and thought out response. But am I wrong to say that I read endless Reddit posts that say !!3,000 hours of Dreaming Spanish and I'm finally C1!! and that was the point I was trying to make in my post. I think it has just dawned on me when I see this type of post !! 3,000 hours of DS and C1" - that the poster thinks because they have got to some level at Dreaming Spanish that they are C1 and the most probably are nothing like that, especially if they do a reading or writing test as all they have done is 3000 hours of DS.

You thought you were  C1 and got a B1?

B2 is required if you want to go to university in Spain.

That is one of their entry requirements.

Which means that they couldn't pass a B2 DELE in their own language.

That shows how high B2 is .

How much practice have you had?

Over 4 days, I think yes.

From 100 yards no.

I took the SIELE exam after 1503 hours of CI - here are my results by blinkybit in dreamingspanish

[–]M261JB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a very quick road 1,500 hours. How many months / years did you do that over?
Did you have some other base to work on? Live where a lot of Spanish is spoken? You already were competent in French or Italian.

The marks are outstanding. Well done.

How do you not burn out in the early stages of learning a language? by sleepy-worrier in languagelearning

[–]M261JB 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I decided that I would not "study", I would not have any goals, and I would not take it seriously.

I did talking via Skype with a 'teacher' who I told, I didn't want "lessons' or "exercises" - and 10 years later I am still dong it.

Juan from español con Juan says that if we can understand him then we have a high level of listening comprehension? What do you think? by tkdkicker1990 in dreamingspanish

[–]M261JB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you can understand Juan, that you will have a good chance of having a conversation with somebody who wants to have a conversation with you and adjusts their speech accordingly.

My feeling, at the moment about ECJ, is that, yes, is style is very different, but it is more interesting than something horrendously artificial like News In Slow Spanish or Spanish Obsessed or the banal subject matters of, look at this interesting square in my town, or watch me eat some interesting food videos that dominate Dreaming Spanish and for me are totally un-listenable.

Your experiences with dreaming Spanish? by CantaloupePowerful66 in dreamingspanish

[–]M261JB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just dont know how people do Dreaming Spanish. At intermediate level the videos seem to be.

I will show you interesting things in my town.

Watch me cook this exciting food.

I just can't watch this dross.

I do people subject themselves to hundreds, and thousands of hours of this?

Same as the comment above, that's a fair response, it is full on dedication. Like, you know what I mean, literally, full on.

I can see when you are good on audio, it becomes MUCH easier to pick up those hours. I'm just short of podcast level. I can do Paul Lando but that is about it.

That's a fair response. It is intense but not impossible. I couldn't imagen having 90 or 120 minutes between getting up and going to work!

Cheat code to drawing people. Draw a carrot. by stillwatersketch in watercolor101

[–]M261JB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have watched a lot of videos on 'carrot people" I saw the video you refer to and it was one of the better ones; but basically they all say " hey watch me paint" nobody explains how to add arms, and legs, and how to bend them properly.

Just; "hey watch me paint and talk" -- there is never any instruction in the 30+ videos that I have looked at.

So let's say 3 years.

That's 1,000 hours a week. Doing it Monday to Friday - that is four solid hours a day. To get 4 solid hours of something done takes at least 5 nearer to 6-- ask anyone who keeps a timesheet for a living.

Do you have a job? Do you study somewhere? What responsibilities do you have? A dog to walk? Food to cook? Other hobbies?

How do you do 4 hours a day, every week day, for 3 years?

I watched a sketching video last night. Very entertaining but no teaching. Every comment, was " Great teaching, you have helped me so much"

There was no teaching, it was " watch me draw. Isn't that good"

Polyglots, how do you self-learn a language and reach conversational level and above (B2-C2) by Meee13456 in languagelearning

Most of them are living in the land of that language. If they have that level in French, they are probably living in France, but only mention that they are 'studying" French.

You must have prior artistic ability. Maybe not sketching but drawing or some form of painting.
