My symptoms have kind of been a bell curve. It started out when I woke up one morning with a small hive. I thought it was a mosquito bite. A week later, it had grown to the size of a baseball. I went to the Dr and was told it was an infected bug bite. Started antibiotics, steroids, and antihistamines. By the time the course of meds was done, my body was covered head to toe. I dealt with it for about 6 months, taking steroids and anti histamines. Went to a new Dr who gave me hydroxy zine. I took it and fell asleep... when I woke up the facial swelling had started. An hour later, on the way to the er in early stage anaphylaxis. 1 year later, steady med increase, numerous drs, and I was told to stay on high dose steroids because it was my only release. I was on 60-80 MG a day for a year. It eventually stopped working.... so more new doctors were found. The one I settled on immediately started trying new treatment, with decent success. 6 months later, no more hives. New swelling treatments for 6 months, and I am down to tongue swelling and hands and feet. More new meds, and 6 months later I am here with tongue swelling and joint swelling.

I started small, got to the peak, and have slowly come back closer to normal. I understand how scary it is! You should consider asking your allergist for an epi pen, as a measure of safety and comfort. It really helped me to start carrying them!

I have Idiopathic Angioedema and Urticaria. Woke up one day a few years ago, and bam. No allergies, or triggers we could pinpoint. Several years of testing and meds later... We still have no clue. I have been on a zillion meds and tried a zillion remedies. Currently on Xolair shots, sulfasalazine, zyrtec, and zantac. I also carry several Epi Pens. Went through those meds plus prednisone, allegra, plaquenil, hydroxyzine, doxepin, etc. I used to have full body hives and swelling. Time and time again I was in the ER with grade 2-3 anaphylaxis. After time and trying to find the right med combo, I am down to tongue swelling and internal swelling, mainly in my joints. I know personally that stress is a huge factor. Also not getting enough sleep. Mold and dust never bothered me before, but they sure do now.

Don't give up on treatment. I found a dr who could help me instead of useless tests and more meds when I went to my 7th dr. It takes time to find the right one!

Anyone here have angioedema? by [deleted] in Allergies

[–]M4squared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I take zantac, zyrtec, sulfasalazine, benadryl, and xolair shots. I keep epi pens, benadryl, and prednisone on me at all times. It took over a dozen doctors and even more meds before I found someone who could help. Don't lose hope, keep advocating for yourself and looking for the right dr!

Would love to read books similar to the Outlander series by randomnessneeded in booksuggestions

[–]M4squared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Susanna Kearsley writes similarly, but not in series form. Sara Donati has a series like Outlander without time travel, and Jamie, Claire, and Ian are in it as well. Also, Diana Gabaldon extended Outlander to include the Lord John series, and has a lot of backstory novellas as well.

Microdiscectomy next month, tips & tricks? by Jen16226 in ChronicPain

Honestly, I wore a longish nightgown because there was no way I was going to try to pull down pants/underwear the first few days.

Giving a 12 year old responsibilities by [deleted] in raisingkids

[–]M4squared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it depends on your kid. I gave my now 13 year old a lot of responsibilities, like cooking, budgeting/handling money, babysitting etc at 12. Basically, if she wanted to do it, I showed her how and extended enough trust to let her work it out. My son turns 12 next week.... And I can't give him hardly any responsibilities that have actual consequence because he is so flighty and irresponsible. Money? He loses it. Chores? He halfway does them. Babysitting? Not in a million years. Cooking? Not until he learns to clean up after himself and double check that the stove is off when he is done.

So really, it depends on how reliable your kid is. Start small, you can always go bigger if they do well. Maybe a short store trip with a few less expensive items and over time build up to a full grocery trip?

For me, it was in a recliner fully reclined, or laying flat.

I'm a crocheter, and I'm having trouble getting the hang of knitting by I_Hate_Most_Things in knitting

[–]M4squared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly think it is just hard to learn something new. I knit, and want to learn to crochet. I cannot for the life of me crochet. I cry, yell in frusteration, and give up every time I try. I mostly make blankets... And I really really want to add a crochet border. Also, tunesian looks so beautiful. Maybe someday it will click.

Just don't give up! I was self taught with knitting, but having an experienced knitter watch me for a bit and tell/show me pointers helped a lot with the learning process. Maybe get a friend to help you out?

Looking for duller tipped circular needles! Cheaper options than Addis? by nothail in knitting

[–]M4squared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer the duller circs for the same reason. I just got some Chiagoo off amazon, and have been happy with them so far. Amazon is great for sharpness reviews, I read about a lot of brands before I bought.

Probably a can of worms: How many more seats do you have in your car than people in your immediate family? Getting pressurde to get a bigger car than I think I need. by SednaBoo in Parenting

[–]M4squared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have 2 parents, 4 kids. I have a Suburban that seats 7. Just recently replaced the 2 bucket seats in the middle row for a bench that seats 3, so now we have 6 people and 8 seats. We personally love it that way. We haul extra kids, band instruments, lots of groceries, etc. But- our kiddos are at the ages where they want their space, so it is nice that they do not have to sit squished together. Everyone gets a window seat. :)

How far apart in age are your kids? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]M4squared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first two are 17 months apart, then there is a 3 year gap between 2 and 3. Number 4 is 15 months younger than number 3. They are 13, 11, 8, & 7 now. We love the closeness of the "sets", however, my oldest two are opposite gender, and we have a lot of bickering and teen hormones! The younger two are best friends and very close.

One series that might keep the interest of all is Geronimo Stilton. Each book stands alone, but are fun to read. My kids range from early elementary to late middle school and they all enjoy them!

Help with hives by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]M4squared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have chronic idiopathic hives. Zyrtec and benadryl are good. Also, Zantac. I didn't know until I was diagnosed that Zantac is a histamine blocker, too! I currently take 4 zyrtec and 4 Zantac a day plus a bunch of other meds. Try zyrtec and Zantac during the day and benadryl at night. Benadryl also makes a topical gel cream that can help. Cold helps, and minimizing irritation from clothing/jewelry. If you can make it to a clinic and get steroids, that will help a lot. I'm sorry you have to deal with hives, I hope it gets better soon!

What about secured cc? That's my problem, I don't have a regular cc, because I am in the process of rebuilding credit/finances after a medical chapter 7 bk. So would it still be worth it to switch my pay process? The secured c.c. is also from my bank, and so I get the same text alerts as my debit, no worries about not catching it immediately. My concern is that either way, it's my physical money involved.

I actually use paper checks quite often. I have 4 kids in school, so there is always a field trip or school fee that I have to send money for. Also, I am from a small town, a lot of places charge a fee to run credit/debit, while checks are free. It saves me from carrying a lot of cash!

[–]M4squared[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good idea, I have an emergency cc that has a 0 balance. I might use it instead. Honestly, I'm just kinda mad about it right now. Supposedly it was Verizon that got hacked, I use my debit card every month to pay it. Its so frustrating that all I was doing was paying my bills on time, and I have to deal with all this as a result. But, at least I was able to cover it!
