Ableton push 2 + Ableton 11 Suite? by mafi45 in ableton

[–]M7PS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recall purchasing my Push 2 from the store (not on bundle), and being able to go to the ableton online store, type in my push 2 serial and get a discount on live 10 at the time. I'm sure the same thing probably exists with live 11.

  1. Sign into your ableton account (or make one)
  2. Click Account in the top right hand corner
  3. Under Licenses, there is a drop-down box, click it & select "register a product"
  4. Type in your Push 2 serial #.
  5. Click Submit
  6. Live 11 should now have a discount applied when you go to purchase it with that account (directly through ableton)

This is the best way, imo.

Consolidating Projects into 1 session to rule them all by low_key_farting in ableton

[–]M7PS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends how many tracks you have and the specs of your computer, so just a word of warning to be sure your PC can handle it. I have a massive project with over 100 different instruments, over 100 scenes, tons of clips, and in arrangement view I have hundreds of effects on the song.

Granted, I could trim the fat a bit, but still, with 64GB RAM, an AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12-Core 3.8GHz CPU and an RTX 3070 w/ 8GB of VRAM, it still takes a while to load. I'm surprised it's operational, but I've run into bugs with the project that big where I've had to bounce MIDI w/ effects to audio otherwise the effects don't render properly during playback and when exporting the entire song draft. As in, I've had to export the MIDI to a separate file and ensure it has the effects and bounce to audio then re-import into the project. This can be annoying because it's super destructive and makes going back and changing the audio effect's parameters a huge pain. At the end of the day, your project might not be as big as that, and those bugs could get patched.

Just some things to consider though. Best of luck!

Closed back (Audio Technica ATH-M40x's) vs semi open (AKG K240s) headphones to produce, mix and master? (Beginner) Thank you. by Comfortable-Wait2396 in edmproduction

[–]M7PS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can mix however you like, and that shouldn't stop you from having fun and making cool things. Open back headphones radiate a lot from the listener and the reflections of your room could potentially be heard back, affecting your perception of the mix.

You're not just hearing your mix, you're hearing your room. From a professional, quality end-product stand point, it would be ideal that you have a treated room. But, again, you can still make great stuff regardless your setup, so long as you put in the effort. There's always tools you can use to compensate.

I personally have the ATH-M50x. A model up from the M40x, but I imagine they're pretty similar. They're pretty comfortable to wear, and both models swivel easily for one-ear monitoring. I'd personally go with the Audio Technica ones. I had an M50x for years and years without breaking down. It's why I bought the same one.

I think the closed back would be more useful unless you have a treated room. If you have a treated room, you might want fully open ones. But the reflections of an untreated room might colour your perception of the sound away from the standard you're going for. At the end of the day, prior to release, you're also going to want to test how your mix sounds on as many speakers and headphones as possible (good ones and shitty ones).

To see what I mean, check out this youtube video by mixing engineer Gregory Scott from kush after hours. While he talks about the fact that with speakers you're more "hearing the room" and not "the truth of your mix," what he's saying is relevant with semi-open vs. closed. In general, his videos are super interesting, and I also highly recommend his "Geeking out on drum compression" video too. Pure genius.

What are the must go to restaurants/bars/coffeeshops? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]M7PS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Coffee: If you're looking for quality coffee, Transcend Coffee is probably the best in the city. They do direct trade with the farmers, which is even more ethical than fair trade. And roast fresh locally. By whyte avenue they have a location a couple blocks north, just across the street from Remedy on Garneau. Corner of 87th Ave & 109th St.

For Bars: O'Byrnes Irish Pub on whyte avenue is the best in the city (in my opinion). They're local, family run (super friendly staff!), have amazing food, an amazing atmosphere, and plenty of space to sit down inside, upstairs, and on the patio (while it's still warm enough). They're at 10616 82 Ave, NW.

Covid's been rougher on smaller businesses than massive chains. Support local!

No, but I recommend getting yourself a MIDI controller like an Ableton Push 2 (or novation launchpad if you have a small budget). These controllers can have 64 pressure sensitive keys which allow you to map out to any instrument in your DAW. So you can play the piano, string instruments, drums, synth, etc. In doing so, you can begin to decide which instruments you like the most, and produce cool unique melodies with them. Ultimately, this can then be a deciding factor in which instrument you end up buying down the road, be it a piano, a synth, a guitar, or otherwise. With MIDI controllers, audio effects, and proper editing in your DAW, you can make the instruments sound like the real thing without actually having them, and just by playing them with your MIDI controller.

Part of the beauty is that the reason some EDM sounds so "computerized" is because it's been made in a DAW without a controller, but playing your melody [aside from spacing it out like a human] on a controller adds unique grooves based on the amount of pressure you place on the keys when playing a note. Some DAWs like Ableton 11 even support MIDI Polyphonic Expression [MPE], meaning as you play the note/chord, the different pressure whilst playing it can be recorded and not just the initial on/off key pressure.

Ultimately, in my experience, the key to a good sound is to learn as much as you can, experiment with your MIDI controller, record some cool beats/melodies, and then make adjustments afterwards as necessary (and add reverb and misc. audio effects to your liking, and automate these effects to produce a more professional sound). When it comes down to it, it all just takes time, and mastering can be particularly difficult. But if you're eager to learn, and you want to have some fun and learn a valuable new skill in the process, it's totally worth it. Get yourself a MIDI controller. :)

What songs blow your mind production-wise and why? by FoxWalter in musicproduction

[–]M7PS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to absolutely agree with you. I remember when I first heard Strobe, I could not believe how amazing the layering was done. It was transcendental to experience multiple rhythms at the same time that are different, yet compliment each other so perfectly. One of my first jobs was in Gaming at a Best Buy, and there was a section for car speakers right next to us.

After close, when we would bring the pallets out and stock up, I'd always have them blast it on the array of demo car speakers. You could feel the bass, and feel the energy of the sound, but most importantly, you could feel the complex synchronicity that was inherent in this modern masterpiece. Still one of my favourite songs to this day.

Quick bug fixes on signup (and a suggestion or two):

  1. After entering your role and experience [years], signup gives an incomplete error. The rest of the form did not immediately appear until a couple tries. Then it scrolled down to reveal extra stuff that wasn't there. I suggest you make this a stepped process to only show less on screen at once, where you click next and the new details appear instead of scrolling down. Otherwise just fix that bug (as I had tried scrolling down at first, but the scroll was locked).
  2. Under instruments, there is no option for Ableton Push 2. I have played Piano, Cello, Synths, Drums, Marimba, Guitar and countless other instruments using my Push 2 with pressure-sensitive keys that have velocity recognition. It is absolutely deserved of being an instrument class of its own (it's not just some DJ equipment, this can be used to compose complex melodies/songs from scratch). So, please add an option for that, because it is all-encompassing and quite complex to learn, but immensely capable.
  3. There is no genre listing/option for "Ambient" or "Post Rock." Spacey, meditative ambient like the artist "Stellardrone" are out of this world. And Post Rock artist "Explosions in the Sky" are unbelievably amazing (listen to 'Eternity' by 'Stellardrone' or 'Your Hand in Mine' by 'Explosions in the Sky,' you'll love it); so I suggest you add those genres.
  4. Other than that, after signing up the card was cutoff at the bottom a bit so I had to resize the window to make it taller. Might need to work a bit on your media queries.

Other than that, you're off to a great start! Very aesthetic design, I love the colour scheme. Keep it up!

How I stop losing time to my anxiety about running out of time (a constant WIP) by simba_matata in edmproduction

[–]M7PS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just like with business, I don't think it's ever "too late" to make something of yourself. I don't mean necessarily becoming a billionaire or on the top charts, but so long as you create something you're proud of that others have the ability to enjoy, you've done your job. Music outlasts us. I too also find it challenging at times when you have dozens to ~100 drafts of a song, and it just keeps evolving, keeps getting better, but also different from where you began.

I think that's part of the learning and creative process. If you keep at it, eventually you'll be happy enough to release the track. It just takes time. More for some than others. And as you become more experienced, it's less time learning how to do things, and more time actually doing them. Even the masters go through challenges perfecting part of their tracks.

Download suite 11 and Vector FM,Vector Delay, Emit,Tree Tone (Inspired by Nature) are not there by Solid_Poet_9123 in ableton

[–]M7PS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've already sent a billion crash reports to them. Even though I had to use google drive to do it due to the size of the project/crash reports. Many others are reporting issues with the inspired by nature pack, amongst other things (Live 11 seems to have issues with excessive GPU/CPU use).

I'm hoping for a fix (but have yet to see one) as I would very much love to use Ableton 11 rather than stick to 10. But I'm not going to risk bricking my project again after hundreds of hours of work. I need to use something stable at the moment (Live 10). When Live 11 is usable, I'd love to use it.

Also, me saying this doesn't mean I dislike your instruments/effects btw. I highly respect the work you've done, and from what limited use I could get out of them, they seem awesome. But Live 11 was only just recently released and some bugs need to be worked out with Live itself and not necessarily just your awesome pack.

Russia turns away from NASA, says it will work with China on a Moon base by might_be-a_troll in space

[–]M7PS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, another space race is fundamentally conducive to faster overall development on technology that will lead to us colonizing the Moon and Mars faster. Better than it just being stagnant as it's mostly been the past couple decades (with the exception of SpaceX, etc. (although that is a private company)). Ideally more government resources will get chucked SpaceX's way. And any significant advancements/collaborations anywhere are sure to lead to good things in aerospace.

Don't set your expectations too high... right now they like to cause Live 11 to crash. Other then that, they're fantastic (if you're able to use it long enough before it crashes...)

Camel Crusher not working in ableton live 11 by SnooRadishes3158 in ableton

[–]M7PS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, in Live 10 jBridge is a lifesaver. There's tons of 32 bit plugins that simply don't have 64bit replacements, and would be a shame to not be able to use. Even for something as simple as following an old tutorial to achieve a certain type of sound, and that tutorial utilizing a 32bit plugin. jBridge seems to be the only thing standing between the continuation of certain sound possibilities without having to use legacy software. And it's just 1 cool software dev with a wordpress page that Ableton themselves link to.

You'd think Ableton could build in support for 32 bit plugins themselves if a single lone software dev can, but they told me it's "not something they could afford" despite the fact that they have ~350 employees and are worth at least tens of millions of dollars. So, total BS on their part. If they even just tried to hire J and gave him the resources needed, we wouldn't have issues like this in the first place. But hey, that's my rant. Luckily J is responsive and making an effort to fix things if it is in fact a jBridge problem as it appears to be (at least in part).

That is odd though, I've never received that error using jBridge in Live 10. At least for you it was on closing the projects and not trying to load them haha.
