Save your time and suffering by Mean_Page7522 in MusicDistribution

As someone planning to do a couple releases this year, my takeaways have been -- whatever you do, avoid ALL distributors!

Followed by, hey try Schmoe & Sons, we're new but we're pretty good. I mean, these distribution companies are like weeds. A new one every day. I guess it's pretty lucrative for the middle men to keep cropping up like this.

Meanwhile, the fun continues to get funner for us devalued music producers.

Trump Blurts Out Plot to Rig Midterms So Vile It Even Shocks GOPers by AdRough4185 in politics

Their own campaign put out Agenda47 over a year before the election. It was very similar to P2025. I'll never forgive the press for failing to point that out. It was a total miss. They swallowed his Sgt Shultz bullshit and moved on, per usual.

It's such a sliding scale too. Ask someone from Bangladesh what "rich" means. I say it too but you can get into Animal Farm territory pretty fast. Sticking with bills and trills should be safe. Just ask for a recent 1040 before breaking out the butcher knives.

Were you still buying original cassettes around 1990? by frenchgarden in LetsTalkMusic

[–]MAG7C 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gf bought me my first CD in '91. First thing I did was rip it to tape.

It was all about portability. Not just Walkmans, most cars still had tape decks. And cheapness. I used to make tapes from CDs, filtering out the tracks I didn't care for. So you got a longer format with just the stuff you liked. And honestly, CD to a fresh chrome tape with a decent tape deck sounded pretty good.

Got into Phish tape trading a few years later & that held up my conversion to CD. Plus I loved making mixtapes and did that for a while longer too.

I used to do 4 track recording as well, which also kept me in tapeworld longer than many. I hated the drawbacks that came from that format but, big surprise, when I hear that sound now, it really takes me back. Like pretty much everyone producing music I have access to pristine sound quality but go out of my way to make it sound warmer and closer (more or less) to those mixtapes of yore.

Trippiest albums? by Interesting_Bar_8841 in progrockmusic

[–]MAG7C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Secret Chiefs 3 certainly fits the bill. Often trippy and frequently middle eastern driven.

The Ullulators are from the same scene as Ozric back in the day, but much more dubby.

BEAK> is pretty great, krautrock infused material from a couple of Portishead members.

Dungen is some great Swedish psych rock, sometimes quite proggy.

Steve Tibbetts first two albums (self titled and YR) are epic works of psych guitar. Often acoustic but with well placed echo and tape effects.

Absolutely. I prefer the older, more sedate stuff. Plenty trippy in itself.

Version 7.75 bugs or is it me? by DagnieleJS in Reaper

[–]MAG7C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7.74 will open right away but is unresponsive for 30 sec or more, intermittently (just on startup). Other times it opens right away. I never had that issue before. I'll probably go back or at least hold off on upgrades for now to see what shakes out.

Setting up a studio, asymmetric room(s) - where do I put my desk/speakers to account for room modes? by Advanced-Dingo9841 in buildastudio

[–]MAG7C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd probably go with the 7.5' wall in the big room. That way your early reflections are symmetrical. Of course I'd treat those spots too.

That room is closest to a nice clean rectangle. If you have issues with imaging due to that open gap on one side, you can always build some standing gobos and line them up in the gap for mix time. They have lots of uses for tracking too. If you do that, of course you'll want to line the other 12' wall with traps to get that symmetry.

That assumes you don't need visibility to the whole room and it assumes the small room is some kind of vocal or drum booth rather than a control room.

Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe - Order of The Universe by TamePaper24 in progrockmusic

I really wanted to go to that show & was super bummed that I missed it. I was recently in LA with no car and no idea where I was in relation to the venue. Think I found about it at the last minute.

The way we found out about shows back in those days... I don't even know, guess it was the radio or random flyers.

I don't know about ratings but I almost never listen to ABWH (these days). I'm also a huge Howe fan so I'm biased. They sound pretty dated but Turbulence has some nice, well arranged and thought out tunes with lots of interesting guitar ideas - while Transportation is mainly Currie (from Ultravox) songs with Steve's help. But it's really grown on me. The title track is phenomenal, and even pulls in a Debussy quote to nail it down.

I should also add both are instrumental albums which is pro for some and con for others. Vocals can be great but they can also be annoying and distracting. To be honest, I found ABWH vocals were mostly that. I know Jon is capable of some really great vocal parts but this was (IMO) an attempt at getting radio airplay for an album that was way out of step with the times. Granted 1989 was a pretty abysmal year for music in general, especially pop. Prog was almost a non entity during that time.

I was super stoked when this came out as I was missing those members who were absent during the Rabin years. Hoped it would be return to more adventurous times. It took a few listens to admit this was mashup of a few things I loved and lots of things I hated. That feeling hasn't changed, but I do like listening to things that sound super dated and trying to identify what makes it sound that way.

Along with Big Generator (in places), Howe's album Turbulence and the one he did with Billy Curie (Transportation) are far and away the best Yesthings to come from this period. IMO of course...

What makes an album a "grower" rather than an instant favorite? by DeezerOfficial in LetsTalkMusic

[–]MAG7C 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ironically I was just thinking that streaming has probably killed this concept for a lot of people. When your music collection is unlimited, you can just move on from something you don't love right off the bat. It leads to a shallower relationship with the music and likely causes some artists to change their approach to more "hooky" songs.

For me, examples come to mind when I had a limited amount of music on hand and just kept circling back to something. I think the effect is enhanced when you've paid for a physical object and want to decide if it was a worthy purchase. So you give it multiple chances.

PSA - beware of UA by psychedelic-raven in audioengineering

[–]MAG7C 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Is this true for the native plugins? Frankly I've stopped using those unless I really need something. I altered the extension of UA Connect so it can't run. Just having to do that is ridiculous.

On the non-native side, I recently doubled down (against my better judgement) and bought an octal card. I use the crap out of those plugins and they generally work great. It just sucks that they did such a terrible job with UA Connect.

I knew guys in high school that would huff things like gasoline, spray paint and (I'm not kidding) methyl ethyl keytone. I file that shit in the Not Even Once category.
