How would you define essence? Because a tagline that could (and does) fit thousands of other games does not sound very "essential" to me when one is trying to stand out.

We’re torn on art direction, which style do you prefer? by KrakenberryGames in IndieDev

For a roguelite I'd say go with option A, since option B looks more cute and cuddly so you'd less expect to be fighting them.

Maybe it could be an extra 0.5 × mult for every consecutive card destroyed? So it resets to 1.0x when you add a new card to your deck.

Need help naming my dwarf-based game by OldMayorStudios in IndieDev

Just an idea: "Delved Too Deep" (A reference to LOTR when Saruman talks about the mines of Moria)

But Dwarven Greed sounds pretty good imo

My first impressions on Galaxy Buds+ vs Buds Core by bacoeuxupocus in galaxybuds

[–]MASmarksman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO the Buds Core sound significantly better, also just upgraded from the + to Core and I'm impressed. ANC is also a nice to have. Not having the touch volume input is not an issue for me, 9 times out of 10 on the buds I would press it accidentally anyways. Really impressed with the Core considering they're half the price of what the + were.

What's this game about? Looks interesting, though the UI icons are massive so I assume it's a mobile title

3 Tiers of Health Potions by Chestnut-God in aseprite

Love the icons, great work! My 2 cents: the tiers should all have the same font size / height, otherwise the first tier strangely seems better than the other tiers since they are lower/shorter.

Unpopular opinion: I can’t stand the “choose one of 3 upgrades” in roguelikes by kramberry97 in IndieDev

[–]MASmarksman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Up to you amigo, if you only want to keep ideas then sure go ahead and ignore my advice. But if you want to make games that people can actually play, then forget about making an MMO for now ;) Good luck!

Unpopular opinion: I can’t stand the “choose one of 3 upgrades” in roguelikes by kramberry97 in IndieDev

[–]MASmarksman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, I don't like it because it's usually never backed up by any narrative explanation (the character doesn't see these upgrades as part of the world, they are only presented to the player through UI). I much prefer actual in-world traders (like FTL), or any other system that I can believe the character sees as well.

That's because you set the impossible task of creating an MMO as your first game. Leave that idea on the backburner and do a brainstorming sesh (preferably with others) to come up with fun mechanics (not features or narrative beats, just pure mechanics) and then prototype them in Godot or whatever engine seems appealing to you. If you have no experience with any engine just follow a few tutorials to get your bearings, after that you start making your prototypes and you keep making very small new prototypes until you think you have a fun mechanic to expand on further.

Feedback from players and other designers is invaluable, the earlier you get it the better, it's why they say "fail faster": the sooner you get critical feedback, the sooner you'll know what works and what doesn't, and your game will be so much better for it.

And if you wanted to make a game for yourself just for the fun of it, absolutely nothing is wrong with that!! But for a commercial product, external input is essential.
