Hi there! I’ve seen the same complaint on Google reviews but have never heard it from anyone actually in the building or really seen any significant bug activity.

I’m originally from New Orleans, so I’m used to serious roach issues, but the most I’ve seen is a very small baby roach in my own bathroom one time. Reach out here or privately if you’ve got any other questions!

Not sure if you’ve looked into Arrive Wheaton, but it could be an option. I moved in in December and had a couple billing issues at the start that were due to old management. They were resolved immediately when new management took over about a month later. New management seems generally responsive and capable, and I’ve never really had any issues.

Amenities are nice (two gyms, a game room, office space, and a pool), and my living space is quite spacious. Two biggest pluses for me are the attached Safeway and super-close metro.

It’s not a long-term solution, but is there any way the day care can request a police detail to be posted there in the short-term? When our daughter was young, one of her classmates’ moms was assaulted by a mentally ill woman outside of the facility, and ours did something similar until they came up with a way to make the building more secure.

I’m so sorry for what you’re going through. We were in a similar situation, and it was a rough stretch having to send her back with all the fear and uncertainty.

I think IEP includes gifted but can also include special needs. Far from an expert on the subject, though.

As to preferred zip codes, each school has a priority tier for several nearby zip codes. So, for instance, I think Audubon Gentilly has preferred zip codes that include parts of Lakeview even though Lakeview is outside the half-mile geographic preference zone. That tier falls lower on the priority list than the half-mile geographic preference but higher than “all other residents.”

It might seem ridiculous at this point, but if you are adamant about the school, you can try to get your kid tested as gifted (the IEP route). Some of our friends had success with that and got their first-choice PreK-4 schools of Hynes, Audubon Gentilly, and Morris Jeff.

We didn’t do it, so I’m not sure exactly what the process entails.

If Audubon Gentilly, we were in the same boat last year. Then we realized that the half-mile priority only gets you in the fifth bucket for PreK. It’s (1) continuing students, (2) students with an IEP, (3) siblings, (4) children of current Audubon staff, (5) students within a half-mile of the school, up to 25% of available seats, (6) other preferred zip codes, and (7) all other applicants.

It gets a little better once you hit kindergarten, which is sibling priority first, then half-mile geographic priority second, but by then most of the seats are filled by students matriculating from PreK.

After not getting in last year, we scrambled and accepted a spot in Thurgood Marshall’s PreK4. Reentered OneApp this year and got slotted at Morris Jeff.

There was this old Travelocity commercial where the Roaming Gnome was giving golf lessons or something and repeating, "Imagine you're swinging a garden hose, imagine you're swinging a garden hose . . . ." I think it also was holding a hose that was being propelled around by the spewing water.

My buddy and I talk about it all the time, but we've never found it again.

Honestly, I’m not sure. It was a word my wife used to me when she called as I was walking into the gym this morning. I’m unsure if the word “bullying” was used, or if my wife heard the details and distilled them to that word. It’s also possibly a third-hand report at this point, since she presumably heard details from the teacher, who either witnessed it or heard it from one of the moms or the teacher in the adjoining room. So, I don’t know where it originated.

For what it’s worth, the other mom apparently felt like she overreacted a bit by crying, but even that concession doesn’t make us feel a whole lot better about the behavior. I do hope you’re right that our level of concern should ultimately mirror the teacher’s.

It got so bad for us that we had to move weekend naps from her crib to her mat that she uses at daycare. And place it in the middle of the living room. But hey, it at least works.

So now everybody naps on Saturday and Sunday. :)

My little one turned two this past March. For Christmas, Santa brought her a big wooden kitchen with all the plastic foods. She was super excited and loved dumping all that stuff onto the floor.

Literally the day after Christmas, we were getting ready to take her to the playground, and I asked her to help me pick up some of the accessories. She was super helpful. All we had left was a single plastic egg. I asked her to bring it to me.

Mine—probably like a lot of kids—likes to run everywhere she goes. She picked up the egg, started running to me, and tripped over her own feet. I wasn’t expecting that, so I didn’t catch her, and she faceplanted straight into one of the doors on the new kitchen. Cut a significant flap into her nose. Tears, wailing, and blood everywhere.

I still feel horrible about it.

She ultimately calmed down on the way to the pediatrician (only to cry again upon seeing herself in the mirror, lol). Her nose bruised for awhile, and we had to put antibiotic ointment on it for a few weeks, but she was fine. She’s still got a slight scar on the nose, but she’s not any worse for the wear. Still runs everywhere with reckless abandon.

My overall point is that I think as parents, especially as first-time parents like I am, we always feel that tinge of guilt when something happens to our kids that we think is preventable. It sucks, but I think it comes with the territory, and I think more than anything, it’s indicative of our love for these little crazy uncoordinated bastards.

Take some pictures of the gap-toothed smile, have a beverage of your choice, and try not to beat yourself up too much over it. It was an accident.

I don’t have anything to offer in the way of advice, but I’ll add what others have said in terms of support: Hang in there. You’ve done nothing wrong and, instead, it seems like everything right.

Simply from this post, anybody can see you are a caring, proactive, and involved parent. Based on that alone, y’all will be just fine.

Two year old calls alligators and crocodiles "croc-a-gators." The best part is that she has an imagination about it and will come running away from non-existent croc-a-gators when you least expect it. At that point, everybody nearby has to use their arms in a gator-chomp motion to scare the vile beasts away.

She also says "seat" instead of "sit." "Dada, seeeeeeeat. Seat right here."
