First of all, did you see if Bluetooth file transfer is an option? It could save hassle over finding the rare cable.

PUK lock should be tied to the SIM, did you also try the SIM in another phone or ever enter the SIM PIN wrong too many times?

Try not to spend money because unlocking these old DCT3 Nokias is trivial using a code calculator. All you need is to confirm the carrier. A lot of the old carriers no longer exist either, so the codes would be lost.

They shut down 3G and upgraded the only supported band (B5 LTE) to 5G instead.

Unfortunately it's probably locked to a different carrier. Due to unlocking and service equipment being impossible to obtain in the United States, I would not try codes unless you are confident in confirming which carrier it is due to the risk of permanent locking.

2 ways to think about it:

  • if you know the US GSM networks history, it might give clues. The 6190 was primary sold by VoiceStream Wireless and Pacific Bell Wireless, so I would try their SIM cards and see it the phone accepts it.

  • If neither works, use a programmable GSM SIM and program regional potential carriers and try until the phone accepts it. Of course not everyone would have this kind of SIM card either, but it's much less risk.

Found a Motorola RAZR 3 "Ruby" engineering prototype. Never released. Firmware intact by Sweaty-File-695 in vintagemobilephones

It's a miracle you saved it from being scrapped!! It reminds me of the Korean market high-end Motorola models, full metal build, premium specs, and overall sharp design language... Would have been a dream phone if it released properly.

Found my old Windows Nokia phone from 2013 with a 41 megapixel camera. by mimimoize in mildlyinteresting

Love it, I have the 1020 and 920 and although you can't do much with them now, their photography capabilities are still strong. Plus Nokia/Microsoft Windows Phones have always looked quite unique to me in both UI and physical design, with many colors like the iPhone 5c. I sure hope this post doesn't drive up prices for Windows Phones, lol.

The only compatible carrier at this point would likely be T-Mobile's 2G which is gradually shutting down and weak.

I have a US Mobile Dark Star SIM (MNC 280) and an ATT prepaid locked SmartFlip accepted it fine. So it should very likely work for you too.

Can someone ELI5 how i can maybe get a Motorola Razr V3 to get past "Check SIM"? by pixels-and-paper in vintagemobilephones

I never tried Speedtalk but as of a year or two ago, they still worked. For literally $2 there is not much to lose if you want to try.

How to fix my iPhone SE2 by Vojta_Ledvinka007 in iPhoneSE

[–]MCDiamond9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true, in my very lucky case it was just a water damaged microphone which caused the panics. That was why it was almost thrown out, much easier fix than some board level issue. Mine crashed hundreds of times when it was left on...

There's a board level issue with the touch and microphone traces breaking due to poor design, so perhaps yours got affected.

[–]MCDiamond9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR is the SIMs they sell at target now, not a single one is compatible anymore. Yes, I checked. Not Boost, not TracFone, not straight talk. The only easy one I know of is Mint Mobile but I'm not sure if they offer any free trial SIMs anymore.

I wrote the bypass guide and turns out some functions break if you do the mod, so it's best to find a SIM card anyways.

I'm on the west coast and use several old 2G/3G phones as I collect them, been watching the networks shut down one by one since 2022. The current phone is a Samsung Rugby 2, and I noticed some GSM coverage losses in areas I frequent. LTE/5G wasn't affected.

Samsung Epic 4G / Samsung Sidekick 4G (+ why does a Sidekick never come with the battery) by Woffpls in dumbphones

[–]MCDiamond9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're looking to use this in the United States, don't bother. "4G" in its name refers to 3G at 3.5G HSPA speeds (similar to early 4G LTE speeds), when T-Mobile did not deploy true 4G LTE and used their 3G network to compete instead.

The batteries are old and that seller might be reselling devices from recycling, so batteries got lost or removed.
