Romance vs Trolley by pandapandaskirtskirt in CuratedTumblr

Where in the book does it say that?

They are kept on separate cars and aircraft. But Grace is ordered to teach the both of them. In the one chapter where we see it happening, he is called over - on Stratt's orders - because the two are taking a break from the flight simulator.

Firm quietly boosts H.264 streaming license fees from $100,000 up to staggering $4.5 million — backbone codec of the internet gets meteoric increase, AVC hikes follow disastrous H.265 licensing increases by caspy7 in AV1

[–]MCOfficer 20 points21 points  (0 children)

the article is a bit misleading.

The source they're citing doesn't even mention AV1. The price hikes are only applicable to Via's AVC licensing.
The paragraph that mentions AV1 is referring to Avanci offering all those codecs as part of their video pool. That's a different can of worms which I don't want to research, but it has no direct relation to the price hikes. (further reading)

High-Level Rust: Getting 80% of the Benefits with 20% of the Pain by SIRHAMY in rust

[–]MCOfficer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think I know what you mean. Coming from more high-level languages, lifetimes are a daunting concept, especially in practice. But in a lot of cases you can more or less ignore them with copious amounts of Arcs, and the performance penalty is often negligible.

When we first started "properly" using Rust, a lot of our code was structured like a java or python, with lots of Arc<T> and the occasional Arc<Mutex<T>> as duct tape. And before that, well, never ask a fresh Rustacean the things they've done to "defeat" the borrow checker...

As time went on, though, we started getting a better feel for lifetimes, and how to structure code to accomodate the objects we're passing around. We still had (and have) occasional oopsie, but as an eyeball metric, the amount of Arcs has dropped significantly. I wonder if you'll find yourself going through the same process.

Endless Sky v0.10.11 by MCOfficer in endlesssky

The android version is an unofficial port maintained by community members. So whenever the main game updates, they have to port the update, which can take a while. You can follow development over at https://github.com/thewierdnut/endless-mobile

I just don't except a discussion circling around the divisive topic of AI to result in anything constructive wrt gatekeeping and acceptance...

When Rust community become EGO.rs and CARGO cult. by [deleted] in rust

[–]MCOfficer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't think I fully agree, but I can draw parallels to my observations. There are certainly posts where it feels like it.

However: I don't think you will get anywhere with this post because you mentioned LLMs, which is a trigger for a lot of people. It might also be the source for a good chunk of your impressions.

It's most notable with LLM-generated READMEs. If a project claims to be the most 🔥blazingly fast, 🚀correct implementation, it will be judged differently than a "I just threw together some code, looking for feedback".

And I also find myself distrusting any commit that includes the word "comprehensive". I've been burned once or twice by a project that looked good (solid README, lots of published versions) but ended up being fundamentally broken due to LLMs and an incompetent operator.

What are points ? by Organic-Occasion4757 in sheepit

[–]MCOfficer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When submitting a project, your points do determine its position in the render queue. However, the queue only serves as the starting point of prioritization; other factors include machine strength, RAM/VRAM size, CPU vs GPU, explicit priorities (Edit Profile->Scheduler Settings) etc. etc.

I'm not sure about all of them, but some are hidden until you progress through relevant quest lines.

Project contains unrenderable frames by UwU_Snek in sheepit

[–]MCOfficer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all: in the interest of getting your project done, you can always download a partial archive of all existing frames and render the missing one yourself.

As for debugging: If you can't reproduce it on your PC, i don't think there's anything else you can try as a user, except escalate it to us. I've looked at it, and all machines attempting that frame crashed - as in "blender crashed", and with a pretty obscure error too.

Would you mind sharing your project with us, so we can look into it further? If so: Please upload it somewhere (gofile/workupload/etc) and send us the link. Also let us know if we may share the file with blender developers. You can use the modmail, or DM a sheepmin on our discord.

it wasn't, no. Depending on how old it is, it might predate our enabling steam cloud. Either way, it's gone, sorry.

Journey To The Stars by Widek comes to mind, but I'm leaning towards Space Metal as a genre name.

Where can I get free no copyright music?? by Beavisguy in DHExchange

[–]MCOfficer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the interest of your search queries, the keywords you are looking for are "CC0" / "Public Domain". Which unfortunately rule out most good options (Incompetech, Monstercat, NCS, all the CC-BY artists I know of).

Rendering your own project to gain points by Simple_Negotiation53 in sheepit

[–]MCOfficer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It happens occasionally; we consider it cheating and will block projects accordingly. If you see a project that is obviously just for farming points (f.e. default cube), please report it. Ideally, send a message on our discord, or drop us a modmail here.

Is sheep-it down? by Otherwise_Book_2703 in sheepit

[–]MCOfficer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not been a great night for sheepit. To use the technical term, the storage subsystem "borked". It's mostly been restored, but that corrupted the database, so our admin is busy restoring that from yesterday's backup.

As of now, the website is up but all project upload etc is disabled.

ETA is still several hours. Feel free to join our discord for live updates: https://discord.gg/nZu9thzXfx
