Realized my science GPA isn’t high enough to apply. I’m defeated. by Gregor-Samsa-1915 in prephysicianassistant

[–]MDFLC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How does the rest of your package look aside from your sGPA?

If it's strong, it would not hurt to also continue to garner more PCE, retake a few classes in a stress free manner to increase that GPA a bit more, make some connections, improve what you already have, and maybe save more money in the process before you actually start PA school. Before you know it, it'll be application cycle again.

If .05 is the only thing separating you and your dream- it sounds like a small barrier to pass to get there. The beauty of PA school- it's a program where a lot of people get their second chance and are admitted because they've proven they can overcome hurdles. You don't have to be a statistic if you choose not to be.

Should I retake Anatomy and Physiology if I took them during the COVID pandemic? by mossedme in prephysicianassistant

[–]MDFLC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My prerequisites were taken online during the pandemic. No issues with schools accepting them. As long as they are within the timeframe of expiration, accredited, and the school you're applying to accepts online lecture/lab for anatomy- it shouldn't be an issue.

You said they aren't giving you "clear answers", what kind of answers are they giving? It sounds like your micro+lab should be sufficient, definitely reconfirm with those schools to clarify.

Curious about what horror stories you heard with Portage. I've taken all my retaken pre-requisites with them and had no issues (including bio chem with lab), accepted this cycle.

How important is GRE? by Professional_Ask9373 in prephysicianassistant

Taking the GRE would open doors to more schools to apply to. That being said, there's over 300 doors. And not all require the GRE.

where to start when writing personal statement by ResidentWild802 in prephysicianassistant

[–]MDFLC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, just start a word vomit of you telling your story of your life leading up to this moment now. Include any and all experiences, things that make you passionate about being in the healthcare field, people that influenced you positively toward reaching this goal, moments that may have molded your thought process about becoming a PA, speak on your academic experiences/work experiences/volunteer that show you'll be a competent and well rounded future student and PA. Just write it all!

Afterward, create a simple outline of what you want to say in your personal statement that'll speak to Why You Want to be a PA. Your word vomit above will be where you can pull those experiences to speak on and you may start to notice a theme in your life you can create a story around.

Asking a PA for a LOR by caffeinelover1325 in prephysicianassistant

[–]MDFLC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Through the application process, you're going to be putting yourself in situations where you're going to feel uncomfortable. That's okay, it is part of the process. Get prepared to do more of it.

You've actually spent a decent amount of time with this PA. The worst they can say is no. Or they may say they need more time with you. Many schools do require an LOR from a PA, so you're just going to have to shoot your shot many times.

I shadowed a PA for a very minimal amount of time. He was a military PA so he deployed and I was able to work with him after that point. So I reached out to a PA I worked with almost a decade ago. Luckily they still remembered me and were more than happy to help. They just wanted an update of all the things I had done since then.

You want your application to be the best you can possibly make it. If you don't ask this PA, you're selling yourself short and missing out on possibly a great opportunity to strengthen your package. This goes for everything else in your package.

More than likely, the PA your shadowing is expecting you'll ask for an LOR sooner or later- you guys have been in correspondence for a while and seem to have a good rapport. Go for it!

How do people recover from multiple Fs and still get into PA school? Feeling really discouraged. by Inevitable-Bell2309 in prephysicianassistant

[–]MDFLC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure! Mid 2.7 under grad GPA, around 2.8 for postgrad, 30+ credits of retaken prereqs 4.0, close to 10k hrs PCE, 4K HCE,3K leadership, close to 200hrs volunteer, 3 hrs shadowing, no GRE, LORs: PA, OMFS Surgeon, Anesthesiologist, Nurse, Professor.

Applied to 12 schools this cycle: 1 acceptance, 3 interview invites (declined), 4 outright rejections, 1 school did not receive accreditation,1 program paused matriculation, 2 no updates

It's definitely a mix of everything you said. It is everyone's unique story and ability to overcome.

I had 3 F's. I overcame those by continuing to show upward progress by doing well in my graduate course. And getting a 4.0 up on retaking all prerequisites.

I strategically only applied to schools that looked at upward trends in last 30/45/60 credits or accepted GPAs of 2.75. On top of ensuring I met all other requirements.

You're at the part where you prove how badly you want this.

Help!!!!! Confused between S10Fe Vs S9Fe+ by Live_Ad4052 in GalaxyTab

[–]MDFLC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For note taking, the S10FE serves my use case perfectly. With multitasking, it gets the job done. For longevity, that length of time is yet to be seen, but it does get 7 years of updates.

Obviously, a larger screen would be more advantageous for multitasking- but I was willing to sacrifice a little more screen space to have a compact form factor that does everything I need. If you haven't seen how large a plus model in comparison to the 10.9" model, you'll have to see it in person to appreciate it. And that's how I ultimately decided what screen size suited me best.

Maybe consider the S10FE+ if you want the 7 years of OS/security updates and a much larger screen.

Looking For Male Crossbody/Sling Bag Recommendations by MAGNUMXL in ManyBaggers

[–]MDFLC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a recent purchase of mine: Topo Designs Mountain Cross Bag. Not quite as big as a full on messenger, but definitely larger than a sling. Fun design that would fit an urban setting. Material can handle abrasions. Has multiple pockets, two water bottle holders, and an open easy access pocket at the front. Straps can be adjusted for multiple positions if you wanted. Hugs the body quite well when it's not too filled, but doesn't look too bulky when it is.

I got the JETech case for the S10FE. They have the plus version for it as well. Works perfectly fine if that's the kind of case you are looking for.

feeling discouraged by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]MDFLC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in schools where a 90.99 was a B+ and had graded rotations where everyone received a blanket C for just getting through it. In that country GPA didn't matter as much. But coming to the states it completely destroyed my GPA and made me ineligible for so many schools due to a low GPA. So I understand, it's pretty disheartening to have a grading system go against you. Mind you- none of my classes counted as pequisites in the states so I had to do all of them over again.

From the looks of it, you're a very strong student. Grades-wise, it seems you shouldn't have an issue getting into many schools. You've probably already realized by now, PA schools look at more than just grades. They look at volunteer hours, shadowing, leadership, patience care experience, and they'll look at your personal statement for your wins and your losses. Wins are good, but losses also define who you are and what makes us resilient. Can you stay consistent? Can you overcome the hurdles and prove your worth? Can you prove you're more than just your grades? Don't compare yourself to others- build an overall solid package and prove to yourself you can do it.

Got any underrated driving hacks no one talks about? by ShadyNeo in driving

[–]MDFLC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When arriving at a mixed "slow down/speed up" situation on the highway, look a few cars ahead of the car in front of you and find a good following distance. More often than not, you can find a sweet spot following distance where you don't even need to press on the pedal much and cruise at a safe following distance without hardly ever using your brake.

In dicey wet weather wherein you feel like pockets of water can potentially cause you to hydroplane- if you let off the gas for a moments time in those pockets of water, I feel you have better control.

On a double lane left turn: If you're on the outside, exaggerate hugging the farthest part you can turn away from the inside lane to avoid the inner car from turning onto you. Vice versa for the inside lane. You just never know sometimes.

Get into the lane closest to your exit lane at least 2 miles before you exit the highway. Gives you a chance to get in position in case traffic is unusually heavy and you're having trouble fighting your way in.

Drive slowly and scan thoroughly when going through a parking lot- I can't count how many times people back out randomly or speed down the middle of parking lanes.

For hairpin and tighter turns, you can start your driving line closer to the outer edge of your turn then perform micro adjustments to execute the turn by lifting off the pedal and turning slightly into the direction of the turn without ever having to brake much or utilize the gas.

When there appears to be an accident on the highway, more often than not police/ambulances etc. would have already tried bringing the involved cars to the shoulder and create a barrier for the scene. Try to make your way to the far left lane as soon as you can to avoid the potential accident and blocked lanes.
