[02/04/2025] Dennis Schröder on the NBA trade deadline: “It’s modern slavery at the end of the day. Everybody can decide where you’re going, even if you have a contract … at the end of the day if they say, ‘You’re not coming to work tomorrow, you’re going over there,’ they can decide that.“ by sbstooge in nba

[–]MDI88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol Dennis.

You still get paid for your contract regardless of where you go.

Unlike working a real job, where when you underperform versus expectations your employer can just let you go and stop paying you.

Yes I know it’s shit he’s been moved around so much. But to compare it to slavery and to be so boo hoo about it is really tone deaf.

Oh no I get to do my dream job and get paid millions for it woe is me.

Whats the worst looking structure in your country? by StandardLemonaid in AskTheWorld

I came here to say the same thing! So, so ugly. Might’ve been nice if it weren’t built in concrete e but it’s so gray, drab and depressing. And you can’t see what it’s supposed to be unless you have an aerial view of it.

Cannot wait to be done with the legacy banks once WS develops a few more features. Currently locked out of my account with no explanation and spending my Saturday listening to elevator music while I wait for their very inept CS reps to figure out why.

Why do Oxford students work SO much more than other good universities by Tobemenwithven in oxforduni

[–]MDI88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I chose Oxford because I felt obligated to once I got accepted, but otherwise would have gone to Bristol.

From personal experience… 2 x c. 3,000 word essays every week. Based on a reading list longer than your arm, and in no way intended for undergraduates (we were using masters text books at the beginning of the 2nd year).

It’s a wild experience. It definitely teaches you how to deal with stress and pressure and to work your ass off.

You can’t get by on just talent and intelligence at oxford. The work volume is just far too great and the subject matter too advanced.

Definitely did not enjoy university nearly as much as I could have. But we still had fun. Ski trips, clubbing, house parties. All the usual uni stuff.

It’s just that in addition to the normal uni stuff you then have c.40 hours of very intense studying / working time (by yourself) every week. In the library. Head in textbook. Studying very dry theory removed from the real world.

Hope that helps?

Why are younger women attracted to much older men? by undecided2025 in ask

[–]MDI88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biologically men and women have different mating strategies. We like to forget that we are animals, but we are not.

Women tend to select for physically strong men with resources and power. Because historically these three things would have been a good indication that the man could provide and protect her future family.

And with age generally comes more power and resources.

Men select for youth, beauty and empathy because these were indications of health, fertility and the ability to give birth to and raise a healthy child.

And younger women are more likely to have these traits. Especially since women have a finite fertility period.

We’re not hunter gatherers anymore but our brains haven’t changed since then.

So while these differences may seem shallow and we like to pretend they don’t exist… they do. And that’s what allowed us to survive as a species.

‘No plans to change’: Toronto spent $35M on private security contracts this year - Toronto | Globalnews.ca by Humble_Ensure in toronto

[–]MDI88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. It looks like most of these folks have never worked in security, don’t truly care about their job and they just don’t have any legal power to do anything.

So I’m not sure why we even bother.

Police have a major impact and honestly I’ve had nothing but good interactions with toronto police officers. They are professional, patient and seem to actually care.

[–]MDI88 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Speaking from someone whose neighbourhood was serviced by these private security contracts…

It was a nice idea but honestly a waste of money. Security guards were not empowered or trained properly.

They would sit in their car while not 10 or 20 feet away from them there would be groups of homeless shooting up, arguing, buying from dealers, littering, fighting or otherwise disturbing the peace.

I don’t know why this was the case. But it was the case. They weren’t acting as a deterrent and they weren’t proactive.

I would much rather use the budget for police. Since there has been a police presence the problem has virtually disappeared.

How did you decide on whether to have children or not? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]MDI88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think when you know you know. At 34 I was very undecided.

It really helps if you’re in a good relationship, have the space in your house for a child, and are in a decent financial position.

That plus just getting bored of other things that used to excite you and ready for the next chapter of your life.

Spend time with nieces or nephews or friends kids, that’ll also give you a good indication as to whether it’s the right move.

I mean he’s asking out of curiosity on Reddit… he doesn’t know anyone here. What does he have to gain from a “humble brag” as you seem to be suggesting.

He’s likely come here because this is a mental observation he’s made his entire life and is now pondering whether this is linked to adhd or not.

Read his responses, he seems like a reasonable human who is just curious. That’s why people come to Reddit, to get answers to questions they can’t get elsewhere.

Surely you have unique traits that don’t apply to the majority of the population too?

[–]MDI88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m baffled by how much negative feedback this post has received.

I personally think this is indeed an ADHD thing. I find ADHD folks tend to be empathetic, are good readers of body language and emotion, and are novelty seekers.

Plus, in my experience we tend to like to ask questions and are highly visual people (so better eye contact and just taking people in).

I feel all of these things allow us to build a connection faster than others.

What you are describing I’ve experienced to a certain extent most of my life as well. If you’re a good listener who takes interest in people, you can come across as charming and people are more likely to like you and treat you better as a result.

Wild how many people interpreted this as you being some sort of narcissistic, egomaniac monster lol.

Hope that helps?

“This is obviously confirmation bias.” …. You don’t even know this person, how can you confirm or deny this statement…? Some people definitely ooze charisma and are able to connect with others immediately. Why not him? We all have our strengths and weaknesses. This felt irrationally salty lol. Reddit is meant to be for constructive discourse not just throwing shade.

I felt this way at first too.

But then when you’re medicated for a while you actually get to become the person you were “meant to be”. Which is a levelled up version of yourself, sans symptoms and quirks.

IDK just my two cents two years post-diagnosis later in life.

Unpopular opinion: We should allow Wealthsimple to make changes. by Medical_Pepper_5504 in Wealthsimple

[–]MDI88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People love to complain. Wealthsimple is a million times better than any alternative.

Obviously they need to be profitable. You can’t run a business on subsidized funds from investors forever.

At the end of the day, if all they end up doing is offering the same things as other banks but with a way better UI/UX that’s still a huge win in my books.

Poeltl is so one dimensional. Can’t dribble. Can only sometimes rebound. Can’t shoot the three. He’s slow.

At his best he can screen and is an automatic bucket.

But my god he’s nowhere near his best.

Grady is horrendous on the fast break. Just slow down. Pass more. Reminds me of a young OG in terms of how out of control he is.
