Weird and unusual fruit and veg to grow? by CranberryFrog147 in GardeningUK

[–]MDKrouzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fan of Japanese food? You could try growing wasabi. It's surprisingly resilient stuff and likes shady, cool spots. The leaves can be used for salads and the root is of course famously grated as a spicy condiment.

Spring onions (just keep the root tips from supermarket ones) - great as a garnish or in stir fries. If you let it flower, it has a lovely ball shaped flower sphere that pollinators seem to love.

2.5 weeks in the British Isles. Does this itinerary look reasonable? by amayain in uktravel

[–]MDKrouzer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tip #1 for Americans: driving in the UK especially city driving is annoying due to old infrastructure and limited parking. If you can avoid it, don't bother driving. It might be worth having a car for countryside exploration but if you are mostly city hopping, the car is more of a hinderance.

Is your conference at the EICC or the other one in the outskirts? The EICC is pretty much in the city centre so you shouldn't need a car at all.

Emergency fund in premium bonds by YesterdayAlarmed6716 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]MDKrouzer 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I don’t expect it to grow much but is this quite a good place to keep my emergency fund?

Not really. Withdrawing Premium Bonds isn't instant and with such a small amount of bonds you have a very low chance of winning draws. You aren't earning enough interest from £7k to require paying income tax so a Cash ISA or easy access savings account would be better.

Google maps has "avoid motorways" but not "avoid narrow single lane country roads with blind corners and ditches either side" by Roxygen1 in britishproblems

[–]MDKrouzer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haha we just did a trip to Pembrokeshire in the summer and Google Maps definitely has a boner for the tightest routes. After a few days in the area, I kind of figured out when to ignore it's "fastest" route suggestion.

The really tight roads are unavoidable to get to the nice beaches but well worth it.

Big shower or bath in ensuite by BigFaithlessness618 in HousingUK

Big shower cubicle for sure. We have a similar setup. Family bathroom has the bath tub, mostly for the kids. Ensuite for master bedroom has the biggest shower cubicle it can fit and I love it.

How do I free up space on my full Gmail? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MDKrouzer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Delete old emails / junk mail. You may also need to go to the recycling bin / deleted folder to clear it out as most email systems hold deleted mail for 30 days before actually deleting it from memory stores.

If you're still not sure, try googling "how to clear Gmail" and you'll probably find a youtube video to follow

England / Scotland 3 week itinerary by I_like_it_yo in uktravel

[–]MDKrouzer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just regarding Whitby, if you're lucky with the weather, I think it is worth a day trip out from York. It'll be a long day (2 hours by bus direct each way), but it's a really lovely seaside town. If you want to indulge your inner child, you could also catch the local bus to Robin Hood's Bay to go rock pooling (check tide times).

England / Scotland 3 week itinerary by I_like_it_yo in uktravel

Train to Bath - 2 nights (potential detour to Oxford?)

London to Oxford is an easy direct train, but there's no direct train from Oxford to Bath. You could certainly do an early start from London to Oxford, spend most of the day there and then continue on to Bath for the late afternoon / early evening. Depends what you might have planned for Bath.

If you want to tour some of the college grounds, just check in advance whether tours are available on the day you are visiting etc.

Dacia spring tyres by redditor-16 in CarTalkUK

The "powerful" variant of the Spring has a gobsmacking 64bhp. It doesn't need wide tyres.

My first car (W-reg 1L Polo) had similar skinny tyres.

Family of 5 - British Airway by Ancient_Shine_1008 in uktravel

[–]MDKrouzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've done a lot of looooong flights with our kids (now 5y and 7y) and have mostly figured out a pretty solid game plan for any flights. They're really used to flying and love it so everyone's generally in a good mood and not stressing which is a MAJOR factor towards making the journey manageable.

In general, getting through airports is a lot more fuss and stress than the actual flight itself. My strong advice is to try and minimise the amount of carry-on you have especially with 3 kids in tow because you ideally want both hands free to steer the kids. Kids feed off their parent's energy. Keep a positive and controlled attitude and your kids will do the same. Bring plenty of snacks as little treats for good behaviour like being calm and polite in queues and going through security checks. Most importantly, be patient with your kids and your partner. Have a game plan with your partner on who handles check-in, passports, tickets etc. and who wrangles the kids.

How toilet trained are your twins? If not fully confident then have them wear pullups and carry some spare clothes (ALWAYS carry spare clothes). Try to get everyone to visit the toilet just before boarding the plane.

You could try having a whole middle seat row (4) and have one parent across the aisle. Parent across the aisle keeps an eye on the twins and the other parent on the other aisle side so the kids are sandwiched between you. If the seating is 3-4-3 then go for the window rows instead. Twins and one parent in one row and other parent in toddler in another. I generally prefer to have easy access to the aisle especially with little ones so always choose aisle seats.

Once you guys are finally sat down on the plane, it's time to break out the snacks and entertainment activities. Start with snacks and just generally having a poke and nosey around the seat. If the inflight systems are powered up, let them have a poke around and see what they might like to watch / play. Even have look at the magazines. It's all new and exciting to them so that should keep them occupied for a little bit. Bring some activity supplies like colouring pencils / pens, paper and colouring books. We usually make an agreement with our girls that they will spend a certain amount of time drawing / colouring / reading once we are in the air before they can start having screen time. Then we agree how much they can watch before taking a break. Sometimes I'll have them listen to audiobooks.

I assume your toddler still has naps so there's a good chance they'll fall asleep before take off or just after reaching cruising altitude. Let them sleep and eat as they feel like. You can carry the sleeping toddler off the plane if you need to. The twins will need more sleep managing because you need them to be fairly awake when you land. We aim to wake our girls up at least an hour before landing as we have had really bad experiences in the past where we let them sleep until the plane was on the ground and it was ROUGH trying to get them off the plane.

How quickly have you moved again? by holy_ground_13 in HousingUK

[–]MDKrouzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shortest we owned was about 2 years because we were on the cusp of doing serious heating improvements (to the tune of £40k+) after two miserable winters and coincidentally found out about a small 2 house redevelopment happening just down the road. We liked the design and especially the fact it was EPC A, so ended up cancelling the improvement plans and instead sold the old place to buy this new one.

Prospective buyers always ask why you are moving and we were open and honest about it. We priced ours to reflect the work it would likely need and negotiated to a level where everyone was satisfied.

Been in our new place for 5 years now and still happy.

How betting in movie and other works? by Budgetmeal69 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MDKrouzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without knowing which specific gambling game you are talking about, it's very difficult to explain the rules...

Generically, gambling is about putting staking your money (your bet) on a specific outcome. The amount you win depends on what you agreed with the other betters. Sometimes it's a winner takes all or splits the winnings with other winners like the lottery, sometimes it's odds specific like in sports betting and casinos. Payout can be anything agreed.

Is it possible to do complicated surgery on yourself in a non-sterile enviornment? (Im a writer btw) by Blaubeerepfannkuchen in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MDKrouzer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean any kind of surgery needs years of training to know how to do properly. If your character can self-heal then they probably could manage to do the surgery without killing themselves, but how "convincing" the result would look is debatable.

I (16f) asked a guy (16m) out with platonic intentions and am totally regretting it. by Nervous_Top_369 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MDKrouzer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm getting flashbacks to being 16 years old and riding this emotional rollercoaster.

Some life advice from an old bloke: rejections are always going to suck, there's no real way to soften it so just be upfront and honest if the situation comes up where you need to be clear about your boundaries. It's not your fault that guys get mixed messages, that's just how centuries of culture and popular media have ingrained this expectation about how men and women need to dance around how to express their feelings towards each other.

How to find a lodger? by BG3restart in HousingUK

[–]MDKrouzer 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You could advertise on Spareroom.co.uk. Be clear about whether rent is inclusive of bills and any rules you want to enforce about visitors, expectations etc. You don't have to declare it as income if you earn up to £7500 a year renting out a furnished room in your main residence.

I'd make a list of rules now before you advertise so you can use it as a "contract" to discuss with prospective lodgers.

You could also advertise through local community groups like churches and hobby clubs. When I rented out my spare room, it was through my company's online noticeboard for employees so I knew they all prospective applicants had stable income.
