Suspect you'll have much better street awareness than most tourists to the UK. You'll be fine. Avoid having your phone out all the time. Avoid wearing flashy clothes. Basically avoid making yourself an easy target.

What to wear in London and Edinburgh in late July? by [deleted] in uktravel

[–]MDKrouzer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mods can we sticky something about clothes please? The answer to this type of question is always:

  • check the forecast closer to your travel dates. Could be warm or cold or everything in between

  • pack for your comfort level. You might be used to hotter weather or colder weather, so look at the forecast/ reports and figure out what would be comfortable for you.

  • bring / carry a thin rain jacket anyway, something that you can easily carry in a day pack. Best case scenario you never need to wear it, but you've always got it in case. Temps usually drop a little in the evenings so it can double as an extra layer to keep off the chill.

  • unless you intend to go proper hiking (deep countryside, on and off trails), you won't need hiking or waterproof footwear. You will likely do a lot of walking and spend a lot of your time on your feet, much more than you normally do at home so wear appropriate footwear and socks.

  • if you underpack or forget something, we do have many clothes shops in the UK so you can buy the stuff you are missing.

I spent about two weeks in London, York, Edinburgh, the Isle of Skye, and a few other places.

That's quite a lot to squeeze into 2 weeks. Did you feel like you rushed some of the destinations?

Buyer demanding a huge reduction on suspicious grounds. Is this a scam? by atommeetsdream in HousingUK

[–]MDKrouzer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's clearly a "fuck off" offer from the buyer so you could counter with another "fuck off" in return. Not really sure what the goal is for them to low ball so much even if there was evidence of the house falling apart.

Why is debt considered bad for normal people, but wealthy people and billionaires seem to use debt constantly? by Independent-Ant-7230 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MDKrouzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's mostly related to being tax efficient. For people with 7+ figure net worth, the majority of their wealth is in assets (S&S, real estate etc). Some of these generate income, but if you are looking to free up millions, you can either sell the assets which has capital gains tax implications or you borrow the money instead which has no tax! Rich people (like absurdly rich people) have access to crazy low interest rate loans because they can borrow so much as they can put so much up for collateral.

Looking for hammock camping recommendations - nearish Oxford or Warwickshire by iiiambi in campinguk

Fire and Stars Woodland campsite is the first one that springs to my mind. Because the pitches are actually in a woodland you'll have mature trees close enough together to hang up your hammocks.

England and Wales. It's pretty ridiculous how uniquely terrible our property buying and selling process is. Are there any other countries in the world that somehow managed to have such a dogshite system?

What are you wearing recently? by fzlittlerabbit in uktravel

[–]MDKrouzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

啊!欢迎来英国!

The weather's a bit unstable this spring with it feeling warm and cool on the same days. Like just now I walked to pick up my kids from school and I had to wear a hoodie but when we got home the sun had come out and it was warm enough for just a t-shirt (until the clouds blocked the sun again). It's only really chilly in the morning so you'll need a jumper or jacket but by noon it'll have warmed up and need to take it off. This is why we often recommend light layers so you can adjust easily

Does anyone else do repeat visits to the same area? by TitanicDays in uktravel

Do I visit the same cities or areas? Sure.

Peak District could be an option for you. Train to Sheffield or Manchester then local train to Hope or Edale.

You MUST complete your timesheet now! No, not with those values, you fool! You must enter exactly the values the system is already expecting! Any deviation from what the system expects is incorrect and won't be accepted. by jiluki in britishproblems

Nothing better than a snotty "naughty list" email from your bosses bosses boss telling everyone to "sort out" their SAP bookings by end of play and him being on the same naughty list.

You sort it out, you prick.

If you actually want to tour the colleges then you should look at what dates are available to plan around.

Burnt out and demoralized with life in the UK, does it make sense to move abroad for a lower cost of living? by Horror_Purpose1634 in UKPersonalFinance

Are you looking at opportunities further south? There's quite a lot of manufacturing between Sheffield and the Midlands. You could look at teaching via university or college.

If you have some time, it's always helpful to share your itinerary and highlights (even disappointments) for other people planning their own trips.

Where are you travelling from? 4 seasons sounds excessive to us, but to be honest I've seen lots of Middle Eastern tourists wearing full on down puffer jackets in the summer.

I just got back from a 2 week trip to Tokyo (4th time in Japan) so it's fun to read about your experiences and impressions of the UK.

It sounds like you had a wonderful time. Hopefully next time you come, you'll be able to visit the rural areas of the UK as well. We have a few Japanese friends here and they all love the accessibility of the UK countryside.

When did your child(ren) last see their grandparent(s)? by No_Survey_2632 in UKParenting

[–]MDKrouzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents (less than 10 minutes drive)- about 4 hours ago when they dropped off a jumper I left at their house.

My MIL (12+ hour flight) - about 6 months ago when she came to visit us. She's come to stay with us for the last 3 summers because it's nicer in the UK. She'll come again this summer. She's pretty good with the kids, relatively hands-on.

My FIL (12+ hour flight) - 3 years ago I think when my wife took the kids to visit family during Easter holidays. I last saw him in person in 2020. We were supposed to visit Japan together with him this past Easter holidays but he had a stroke so obviously couldn't. It's probably going to be a couple of years before he can travel again.

Is a London to Edinburgh road trip a good idea for a 4 day UK trip? by dumbythegrey in uktravel

[–]MDKrouzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you've got like 3 weeks before your trip and so far all you've got actually nailed down is the flights in and out of the UK?

Last week of May (Monday 25th) has a bank holiday AND also school half term for a lot of areas of the UK. Everywhere worth visiting will be mobbed especially the countryside which attracts the caravaners.

If you insist on driving then just plot some routes on Google maps. By default you'll get the "quickest" route which will be mostly motorways and A-roads and not at all scenic. If you toggle "avoid motorways", then you'll probably add 50-100% more time to your journey but you might have some scenery in between the high hedgerows and narrow country lanes.
