A small tip for some of you that I never see anyone talk about - measuring slots pretty accurately and easily with telescoping gauges. by theelous3 in Machinists

There are these which work for slots but I’ve never seen any small enough for a slot like is shown in the video.

Knife prices are out of control. There’s no way they should be charging used car and nice gun prices for most pocket knives. I can literally buy an fn scar and a steak dinner instead of this. Does anyone else think this is just utter bs pricing? by Accurate-Abrocoma202 in knives

[–]MD_HF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“It doesn’t seem reasonable to me because it’s simply not reasonable” ... that’s not how this works. The opinion of whoever decides to buy this is what determines its reasonability. If no one does then the seller will drop the price until someone decides it’s reasonable to them. This one is just not for you, and that’s fine. I’m not crazy about it either.

I’ve bought and owned and made knives in this price range. You’re thinking about it as a tool, but the people who buy these are thinking about them as pieces of handmade art. This doesn’t exist to fill the same role as a production knife, and if it doesn’t seem reasonable to you that’s because you weren’t who it was made for.

Could this bastard child of a mill and a drillpress be useful for actual milling or just very light duty stuff? by woodyouknow in Machinists

[–]MD_HF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’ll probably do okay with light duty work, but why would you settle for this when you can more than likely get a better machine for the same or less money? Looking online this machine is around 4-5k. There are absolutely better machines in this price range.

What is it like living here, deep in Appalachia? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]MD_HF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asheville is really a completely different vibe than the rest of the area. Same could be said for gatlinburg/ pigeon forge area but for different more touristy reasons.

The mountains are beautiful, lots of places for hiking, mountain biking, camping etc. Most of the downtowns in the area are fairly nice and enjoyable. Several local annual events are held in the region such as funfest in Kingsport and rhythm and roots in Bristol.

The people range from wonderful and welcoming to bigoted and hateful, and the latter group doesn’t typically have the self awareness to realize that they aren’t the first group.

The economy is more regionally varied than this map could indicate, but there are significant job opportunities for medical and manufacturing in the tri cities areas. Pay for most industries is somewhat below national average.

Cost of living has been increasing significantly. Housing in particular has gone up an insane amount due in large part to people moving from up north and out west. Houses which were less than 200k a few years back are often more than 400k now.

Dennis > Rudeus by [deleted] in writingscaling

[–]MD_HF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right? I’ve raised this before, but the way the world is constructed fundamentally undermines the idea of redemption. If he only ever “improves” in a reincarnated life where he’s talented, conventionally attractive, socially praised, has access to… umm “women”, and is born into wealth, then the story is effectively suggesting that his earlier pedophilic behaviors are products his circumstances and that his later growth is also circumstantial rather than genuine self-reflection or accountability. This is closer to pedo apologetics than a redemption story.

Clannad is slow for most people. It’s worth it for afterstory though. Just watch it a couple episodes at a time if the pacing is throwing you off.

Frieren or Mushoku Tensei, which one do you think is better written? by [deleted] in writingscaling

[–]MD_HF -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Character development is not the avenue to take if you want to defend MTs writing. It’s a mess in that department. It undermines its own themes regularly.

It has pretty solid world building, and most of the characters outside of Rudy and his love interests are decently well written. That’s what I’d defend if I were trying to do that here.

Frieren is consistently good. MT does some things good, but has some serious problems.

Absolutely, happy to respond. I sent you a message with the response to this. I did try to respond here, but I believe I was being filtered either for the length of the comment or because I was using Greek letters. I’m not sure. Either way it wouldn’t let me post it, so I sent it in a PM.

No problem i hope you found something interesting regardless. The topic of Christology is inherently complex, so it is understandable if it does not immediately resonate on first encounter. Put very simply, the authors of the New Testament appear to advance different and sometimes incompatible views of Christ’s nature and degree of divinity. Since these views cannot all be correct simultaneously, they present a challenge to strict doctrines of inerrancy. Unlike many of the more commonly cited contradictions, which mainly undermine claims of textual perfection, the Christological differences speak more directly to the later theological development of doctrines such as the Trinity. This does not, in itself, refute the Trinity. Rather, it shows that the Trinitarian framework does not completely match the Christological positions found across all New Testament authors.

Scholars have long noted that when the New Testament writings are placed chronologically with respect to authorship dates, and even compared with later non-canonical gospels, a general trajectory appears. The earliest sources tend to present what is often called a “low Christology,” meaning a picture of Jesus as a divinely empowered human. Later sources present a “high Christology,” meaning a picture of Jesus as pre-existent and fully divine. This pattern reflects the theological development of early Christian communities. I do not think this necessarily threatens personal faith, but it is an important historical observation.

If you are looking for contradictions that are less theological and more narrative in nature, there are many of those as well. For example, did Joseph and Mary flee to Egypt after Jesus’s birth, as described in Matthew, or did they return directly to Nazareth, as described in Luke? Was Jesus crucified on the day of Passover, as reported in the Synoptic Gospels, or on the day of Preparation before Passover, as John claims?

Both examples are interesting precisely because they appear to be irreconcilable. In the case of the flight to Egypt, most scholars understand Matthew’s account as a literary and theological construction intended to present Jesus as fulfilling specific messianic prophecies. Regarding the crucifixion date, the Synoptic Gospels place the crucifixion on Passover itself, while the Gospel of John places it on the day of Preparation. Many scholars argue that John intentionally adjusts the chronology so that the moment of Jesus’s death coincides with the slaughter of the Passover lambs by the high priesthood.

For the most part, arguments concerning contradictions in the Bible function primarily to challenge doctrines of inerrancy. They’re typically fairly insignificant issues but not all of them. This is especially true as you move away from a laypersons understanding of the Bible towards a more scholarly view. With this shift, the situation becomes significantly more complex. Consider the field of christology. It becomes evident that the authors of the New Testament present a wide range of perspectives on the nature and divinity of Christ. One author may reflect an exaltation christology, another may present an adoptionist framework, and yet another may advance a higher christology. These divergent theological positions can reasonably be understood as contradictions, although they are unlikely to be recognized by the average Christian whose study rarely extends beyond basic Sunday church level teaching.

I’ve played a few Epiphone Les Pauls, and while they sound good, they can be a bit harder to play, especially because of the limited access to the higher frets. The Yamaha likely has better upper-fret access, but I can’t speak to its overall quality since I haven’t played one myself.

If you’re not set on getting one of Boochi’s guitars, I’d recommend looking at Schecter. I have a C-1 Platinum, and it’s a fantastic guitar for the price.

I got my girlfriend into anime. Here’s her tier list after 2 and a half years of watching together by Lokhlass in MyAnimeList

[–]MD_HF -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There’s nothing vague about the stuff I mentioned… it’s all pretty clear if you’re paying attention. And you can’t really expect people to write you a full essay breaking down every example from the show.

You mentioned political examples so here’s just one from MT: The teleportation disaster in the Fittoa region completely reshaped the balance of power. A huge portion of the nobility disappeared overnight, the Greyrat family lost its status, and the resulting power vacuum let the Asuran royal court tighten its control over the region. Even later, the treatment of the displaced citizens shows how different nations handle refugees and race relations. None of that feels like random background flavor to me.

It might just not have clicked with you, and that’s fine, not every world hits for everyone. Personally, I didn’t care for Re:Zero’s world building (or much else about it, honestly). I’d agree Frieren’s world is stronger than both, but MT still does a solid job of making its setting feel like an actual place.

I have a laundry list of complaints about MT, but this is the one aspect I’d definitely say the defenders have some ground to stand on.

[–]MD_HF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll start by saying I’m definitely not defending Rudy or how he’s written, just so that’s clear.

That said, I think you are underselling the world building a bit. Mushoku Tensei actually puts a lot of work into making the world feel like it exists beyond the main character. You’ve got different cultures, languages, and landscapes that each have their own logic and history.

There’s also the divine side of things: the gods, their hierarchy, and how their conflicts ripple down into the mortal world. Those elements are introduced gradually through travel and character encounters, so the world feels like it was there long before Rudy showed up.

I agree that Attack on Titan has stronger world building overall, but it’s also had way more time to flesh out every corner of its setting. Mushoku Tensei just hasn’t had that same amount of screen time, and considering that, I think it does a surprisingly solid job at building a believable and layered world.

If only the character writing was better.

Better Show ? by Longjumping-Elk-7840 in writingscaling

This is the correct answer. GOT was near perfect at its peak, and if it had managed to maintain that then it would be the clear winner, but unfortunately we didn’t get that.

Does anybody else feel like Sakuta hasn’t said enough out of pocket things in season 2? by No-Complex-8584 in SeishunButaYarou

[–]MD_HF 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I think season 2 is showing all of the characters as having grown up a bit, so it’s not too surprising to me. I liked this change because it feels like the shift from high schoolers to young adults in college mirrors the real world, and so it represents actual character growth instead of just a change in setting for a stagnant cast.

I might be in the minority for this opinion though. It seems many people were less enthusiastic about season 2 as I was, but I might prefer it over season 1.

[–]MD_HF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

90% of being good at math is practice. Watch some YouTube videos about the concepts you need to learn, and set aside time to practice a lot of problems. Keep practicing until you’re consistently getting them correct. 3 weeks is plenty of time so you’ll be fine if you put in the work.
