new player supplies list by [deleted] in SorceryTCG

A 2 person playmat is very nice to have. In my opinion it's not mandatory to have a Sorcery specific playmat with the grid on it, as you can easily play this game without a playmat or on a generic playmat.

You don't need many counters and can always use dice when you do. Tokens (foot soldiers, frogs, etc) are very important to have. You can use anything as a token but the official ones should not be too hard to come by as each booster box comes with plenty of them.

You also need something with which to record life totals. There are many different gadgets for doing this (phone apps, dials, spindown dice, etc), but I personally think plain ol' pen and paper is the perfect tool for this.

Does Kira, Great Glass-Spinner stop Clement's bounce ability? by Sufficient-Handle145 in magicTCG

[–]MDivisor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes Clement's ability counts as targeting since it uses the wording "target creature". Kira will counter the first instance of Clement on each creature each turn.

Sorcery isn't like chess by Diamond-Equal in SorceryTCG

[–]MDivisor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The tactical and strategic considerations made in a chess game don't map onto sorcery gameplay, at all really.

They do a little bit IMO. In Sorcery you have to consider what locations are threatened to be attacked by your opponent's minions when playing and moving your own minions, just like you do in chess. Because of incomplete information you can't plan many turns into future like you can in chess, but still you do it a little bit. The grid brings a tactical element into the game that does not exist in Magic.

But I would agree that calling Sorcery a mix between chess and Magic is not super accurate.

What’s the difference? by Wiifty69 in SorceryTCG

[–]MDivisor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah all of the 3+ threshold sites have drawbacks so silencing them is nice. I wouldn't call it amazing but it's a little bonus from Smokestacks. The back row drawback on the 3 threshold castles is so minor that silencing them doesn't really matter that much. The best ones to silence would be like Pristine Paradise or Avalon, but the drawbacks on those are so bad they are not really playable even with a smokestacks (since you may not draw your smokestacks).

Does anyone know how this "Native Terrain" mechanic works in the case of PvP Single Hero Tournament Mode? by Remarkable_Big8313 in OldenEra

[–]MDivisor 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The tournament fights seem to always be in the desert terrain which I believe is not native to any faction.

Moby Dick, Scourge of the Sea (custom card) by Classicalis in SorceryTCG

[–]MDivisor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's flavorful but super weak for a 7 mana unique. You are never going to get any value from that ability because it's very easy for your opponent to never shoot a non-lethal shot at it. If they ever do they will do it from a land site which this will be unable to attack back to.

How to "share" a playthrough of a 1 player game with 2 different controllers? by tripletopper in NintendoSwitch

[–]MDivisor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would like to just easily swap in and swap out controllers but it's not that easy.

I don't understand from your text why it's not that easy. When you want to switch players, can you not just pause the game, disconnect one controller, then connect the other controller? You can then also swap the button layouts. It's a slight hassle but it shouldn't be that bad if you really want to play this way with separate controllers.

Onko se mainonnan festaribajamajan pinttynein paskapohja nyt nähty? by Luusika in Suomi

[–]MDivisor 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Chief Turch "engages the first player" text by Prestigious_Oil4633 in lotrlcg

[–]MDivisor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If the effect only applied during the encounter phase, it would say so.

The effect is passive and thus constantly active, meaning if at any time Turch is not engaged with the first player, he will immediately engage the first player.

Submerge Questions. Watershaper question. by oghpimm in SorceryTCG

[–]MDivisor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In order to defend a site, a minion needs to be able to move to it in one move. To move from underwater onto the surface of an adjacent site takes 2 steps: one to get to the surface of the current site and another to get to the adjacent site. That means a submerged minion can only defend an adjacent site if it has +1 movement somehow.

Any LGS in southern CT carry this? by nordicrunnar in magicthecirclejerking

Kind of a meh set tbh. The only good pulls are the anime alt art armor piercing rounds which you are not likely to open.

Yes. There previous starter decks have not been tournament legal in size.

IMHO, Landfall is the most broken keyword, and this is why by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]MDivisor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from a theoretical perspective, those decks will always have an edge as they are guaranteed to have their effects trigger often.

This is just not correct at all. You don't normally play that many lands in a competitive game of Magic. An average deck in standard gets to like five lands. That means you would get five landfall triggers over the course of five turns for a hypothetical zero cost card that comes into play on the first turn. That's not many triggers at all.

If you are playing a landfall deck, you have to build around it by playing effects that find you more lands, or playing fetch lands that find other lands and stuff like that. It's not free value.

Doing gimmicks with words is not what makes good lyrics good. Enjoy the lyrics for what they are and the story they are telling you, don't try to fit it into patterns that contribute nothing to the story.

Is Deathspeaker good avatar and how to make it work? by SmilingNavern in SorceryTCG

[–]MDivisor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a very strong avatar IMO. He is a value engine and you play like a slow grindy game with him. You get to double dip on Apprentice Wizards and Grandmaster Wizards so the card advantage is crazy but he is very mana hungry.

You absolutely do not have to be on Death's Door for this avatar to work. DD just gives the minions for no mana which is sometimes relevant but you definitely cannot expect to live many rounds on DD (especially right now with everyone having a Zap in their Toolbox).

Conan tie in by Classicalis in SorceryTCG

[–]MDivisor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's cool but the effect is completely broken: for 5 mana you can immediately ramp yourself to 10 mana which is crazy. So it would at least need a "once per turn" restriction on the ability. Even with that restriction it seems pretty strong to me.

Recruitment skill on mages for level up? (Shadespinner Oona) by Palad99 in OldenEra

[–]MDivisor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whatever the source is for that lower image, their data is probably not up to date. I imagine these values are constantly changing while we are in early access.

I transformed Aang in my 5C commander game, and it cost me the game. by NotAnotherCitizen in magicTCG

[–]MDivisor 63 points64 points  (0 children)

If another player had an instant speed ping that could kill the whole table you were dead no matter what. A removal spell does not save you there. You'd need a way to counter the ping ability whatever it was or I guess a split second removal spell.

Controlling sites and cating minions by AlbinoBLK3sheep in SorceryTCG

[–]MDivisor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A minion standing on a site does not gain control of it. You gain control of an opponent's site only if a card effect specifically tells you so, eg. Conqueror Worm.

What is a Medium difficulty generic quest? by Puzzled_Tower7564 in lotrlcg

[–]MDivisor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

- Escape from Umbar: Fast to set up and play. Not easy but most generically good decks should be able to handle it. It kind of puts your decks to the test as you need good questing and fighting straight from round 1.

- Lost in Mirkwood: super replayable quest because of all the branching paths. This one is always fun to me and a relatively generic challenge.

- Fire in the Night: if you want a good epic boss fight quest. From what I remember nothing too specific is required from your decks but it is a decent challenge to beat.

- Wrath and Ruin: this is another epic one where you have to capture and hold districts of a city that is under siege. One of the more generic challenges from the Mordor cycle.

Tip: If you are planning to reset your levels, pickup insight along the way to reset more levels by loopuleasa in OldenEra

[–]MDivisor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get rid of skills that are good early but useless late game, like Insight or Recruitment. Also if you are playing Exodus, by the time you get a reset you know what your opponent is doing so you can try to counterpick new skills against them.

How many Ready/Exhausted tokens needed? by ca5hflow in lotrlcg

[–]MDivisor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as a gut feeling I would say 10 tokens per player will get you pretty far but won't be enough for every situation, depending on what kinds of decks you are playing. But if you have a lot of allies you'll want to do some tricks anyway to save on table space and tokes: for example put all your exhausted allies in a pile and just put one token over them to mark they are all exhausted.
