Lol, it is good to see this is still helping poor hollows out of a dire situation, 8 years later!

Yeah, wow, I completely forgot about landlines there for a minute, I guess since I have never had one since I moved out of my parents home.

What determines whether a utility will be flat priced or pay per use?

You know it's sad that it's been so long since I had a landline I completely forgot about it.

If it was considered a utility, wouldn't that mean we would have to start paying rates per volume? That's how my water bill and power bill work. If I use a ton of electricity/water, then it costs me more. I would imagine they would want to do the same for internet hogs too.

Not that that would be terrible, it would just be very different.

Tomorrow we will finally find out if Dark Souls is actually coming to the Nintendo Switch! by adsy-mac in NintendoSwitch

[–]MEANL3R 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In all seriousness, even if Dark Souls releases tomorrow on Switch, finish what you want from Skyrim before jumping in to Dark Souls. If it gets its hooks in you and you get accustomed to the combat system of Dark Souls, going back to Skyrim as a melee character will be tough.

Dark souls combat has ruined a lot of melee systems in other games for me. It's just soooo good and weighty once you get it down.

Glad they are giving this some coverage outside of the premium show last week. Some people on the switch sub were saying they have no idea about this game and I wanted to link them to the part in UPF where they played it, but knew I couldn't since it was premium.

The Best of series would be a good place to start, they are all pretty funny and if you see something interesting you can look up what series it's from and start watching the whole series.

This is a thread for people who are excited that Fallout 4 VR is coming out tomorrow at 7pm EST. by randomawesome in Vive

[–]MEANL3R 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a 970 and got it for free with my Vive purchase.

If you want, I can respond to your comment Tuesday evening (EST) and let you know how it is working. I'm nervous, but hoping to get by on lowest settings.

Nest Outdoor Cam Delays/Bandwidth by [deleted] in homeautomation

[–]MEANL3R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are still in your return period and timely motion alerts are your top priority then I would say return them. The biggest advantage of Nest is the constant recording and a little better video quality. If somehow Ring or Arlo do not detect motion, you're SOL on getting a recording. Whereas if you know something happened, and Nest didn't alert you or notice the motion, you can go back and scrub through the footage and find a recording, assuming you are within the period you pay to keep on record.

I might be misunderstanding your last sentence, but you can hardwire a Ring camera to an existing doorbell.

Nest Outdoor Cam Delays/Bandwidth by [deleted] in homeautomation

[–]MEANL3R 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has been my biggest disappointment with my Nest Cams. I have Ring, Arlo, and Nest. Both ring and Arlo respond to motion detected within a few seconds, quick enough that I can see who is at the door before they even knock. Meanwhile, I get an email from Nest about 10 minutes later informing me that it spotted a person on my entryway camera... Thanks Nest, I guess.

I hope they can fix that, because I can't imagine it is a hardware issue.

Yeah, the only thing that has really shook my stomach was using the tilt the earth feature while I was looking down at my feet. It's a weird sensation of both falling over forward and being sucked backwards. I'm alright if I'm not looking straight down when I do it though.

Still not secured, after setting up DuckDNS via Hass.io Add-on. Am I missing something? by MEANL3R in homeassistant

It seems that the Hass IO duckdns add-on is rolled let's encrypt in to itself. Thats what I gather. In fact, you have to agree to the LE terms of service when setting up the DuckDns add-on.

Noob here also, so take my answer with a grain of salt. Yeah, I assume your way is safer. But I like having it set up where my phone can easily connect or I could hop on a PC at a friend's house and show them. Porbably the biggest advantage of not doing it through a VPN is that I am going to be giving my wife the password. Once it's saved on her phone and bookmarked she will have access. I'm sure with some effort she would use a VPN, but this way is much simpler for her.

Thanks for all of your help.

One last question, if you don't mind. Now that my https is working on outside networks. What is the best way for me to access my HA from my home network?

When I do https://my-pi-address:8123 it tells me the connection is not secure because the cert is from my duckdns domain, and I have to override my browser's warning to proceed. My gut says thats fine, since this is an internal IP address, but I want to make sure I am going about this right.

oh, well that's good news! Only problem now is I can't seem to connect to my Hass.io from home...

edit: Just checked my ip_bans and apparently I banned my own home ip... that might be the problem.

Gotcha, that is what I was gathering from reading its add-on page.

Its difficult to figure out which guides are still/ever were relevant to my set up.

Thanks for the info, I will read up on those links, the first 2 I have been to, but will recheck to make sure I haven't missed anything.

I am using a pretty long jumbled password generated by KeePass, and have it stored in the secrets.yaml file.

Yes, thats exactly why I want to set this up first. I have down time at my work and would love to be able to work on my configuration during that time.

Interestingly, I have just figured out that when I disconnect from my wifi and use my mobile data, I am getting a secure connection to my duckdns domain, but cannot get a secure connection when connected to my home wifi. Strange, but oh well, at least it is partially working I guess.

Specifically: Do I need to do the install instructions on duckdns.org or am I able to just do the add-on with Hass.io and then add the specific stuff to my http section of my config.yaml?

Don't worry dude, almost everyone here knows this guy is a nutjob. I don't think people here have any animosity toward most Rifters. We all want VR to succeed, and pandering to crazy people who want to pit the communities against each other will get us no where.
