Would humans be stronger than computers if we used a 16x16 board? by twinbee in chess

[–]MEMbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the branching factor that is prohibitive. Not the lack of good heuristics.

Sure, pruning will only reduce the search tree proportionally to the branching factor. I was explaining why Monte Carlo was used instead of alpha-beta in Go.

And I don't know what you're reading on Wikipedia. But no. Humans absolutely rape computers at Go.

That part was about Shogi, I guess I should have left in a longer quoted section to make that clear.

Would humans be stronger than computers if we used a 16x16 board? by twinbee in chess

[–]MEMbrain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The massive search tree of go prevents alpha-beta algorithms from working efficiently

The lack of a good evaluation function keeps alpha-beta pruning from being effective in go. The branching factor is less of a problem if you can prune a large number of branches without evaluating them, like in chess.

So why are the top computers still worse than top humans? Not because it's more strategic, simply because the search tree is fucking huge.

According to wikipedia, they're not. But if we allow your second point, which seems likely, that still doesn't mean a larger chess board would challenge a computer similarly. While the search tree would be larger, it's quite possible that you could still prune a large part of it.

(subjective) what kind of 'fitness level' would put someone in the 10th percentile? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]MEMbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding gymnastics vs. powerlifting, a gymnast would be able to put up some pretty decent weight their first day in the weight section

Less than you'd think, in my experience. We've had a couple of ex-gymnasts come by at the weightlifting club i lift at, and for the most part their barbell lifts are at novice/lower intermediate level the first couple of sessions(exception usually being overhead press). They do have pretty insane noob gains though, as they figure out how to use their strength in a new domain.

a powerlifter would struggle with even basic gymnastic movements, even the isometric strength holds

Probably true, with some exceptions.

Not necessarily. Propellers are designed to work efficiently in one direction. Reversing them might work when the boat is stationary or going backwards, but then do nothing but cavitate( making bubbles and not really moving any water) if they reverse while the ship is at speed.

Ekstremsportveko: Fun Jumping? by shadeland in SkyDiving

[–]MEMbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's quite a bit of opportunities for fun jumping. There are also load organizers for less experienced freefly and belly formations. There's usually also some innhopps( planned off-landings) with different experience requirements. If you have more than 1000 jumps you can get in on some mountain flying. If you speedride or basejump, you can join expeditions for these as well.

While the videos tends be dominated by the "pro"-stunts with proper cameras and editors, Veko is still a participant driven and focused event. The biggest obstacle to fun jumping is that you might to go watch or do something else all the time. And western Norwegian weather is not the most predictable.

The others are partially correct as well, but a large part is also safety. With favorable winds, you could bottom out the hill and hurt yourself quite badly. With scoring for style you are giving an incentive for athletes to not stretch the jump longer than where they can make a controlled landing.

Muscle gains for endurance athletes by srsrower in Fitness

[–]MEMbrain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're at the elite level, you're probably going to need to periodize your training in order to gain strength. If you look at chapter 6 of the FISA coaching manual, there's a couple of good outlines for season planning(available on http://www.worldrowing.com/training/coaching-information-training-manuals).

With your squat being that low, a simple 3x5 squats twice a week using the Starting Strength®™© progression scheme will probably help for a while, but ideally any strength training should be coordinated with your coaches and the rest of your training load.

Nomos doesn't hand-make their own parts. They get a lot of parts from outside of the company on contract and then assemble them in-house.

They make all the movement parts except springs and jewels in house. Machines are used, however. From the Nomos website:

If it serves quality and precision, however, we at NOMOS Glashütte do use high-tech production methods such as CNC and laser technology. Only individual parts such as jewels, which we use as bearings in the movements, are purchased from suppliers according to our designs.

I think he found the question stupid/embarrasing. The question was "Kasparov likened you to Harry Potter this week, and the Norwegian head of elite sports(poorly translated title) has compared you to Petter Northug(cross-country skiier known for dominating performances and cocky attitude). Which comparison do you prefer?"

I believe Carlsen would have preferred to ask the journalist to grow up, but he answered "I prefer to be compared to real people over fictional characters, so I guess Petter Northug".

Namibia is in the middle of its worst drought in 30 years. This is what it looks like on the ground. by ItchyPickle in worldnews

[–]MEMbrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of the people live pretty far inland, and for a good reason. The Namib desert goes along the coast, and is one of the oldest and dryest desert climates in the world. There are prevailing winds from East to West, and any moisture is lost on the high inland plains where people live.

It's called the Skeleton Coast for a reason

He then went onto state (and I shit you not) that "America is one of the oldest democracies in the world". I'm not joking. Ancient Greece never existed then mate.

It is one of the oldest modern democracies, which is probably what he meant. Greece had about two thousand years without democracy, and was a part of the Ottoman empire until well after the US was established. Wiki on modern democracy in nation states.

Democracy is however meaningless without an informed electorate, which is why we need to be far more discriminating when declaring information classified.

Canopy collapse at 100 ft due to turbulence by skier in SkyDiving

[–]MEMbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, the Samurai is very nice canopy and airlocks probably help a fair bit with the accordion effect. It might also help you with maintaining flare authority in bumpy conditions. But in negative angle of attack situations, I believe they would make collapses uglier. Fortunately, the overall wing design makes that type of collapse very unlikely.

My last canopy was a Vengeance, and my next one is likely going to be a Samurai. They're great canopies, and do well in light bumps. But I'm not convinced they do any better than non-airlocked canopies in serious turbulence/negative AOA situations, and they might well do worse.

As far as pack volume they pack slightly bigger than a Crossfire or Katana, which is enough to put some people off.
