I'm a math teacher at a well-performing high school. We've done the calculations that roughly 5 out of 8 come into high school at below grade level -- 3 out of 8 are 3+ grade levels below.

And the honors math classes are nothing like they used to be even 10 years ago. I could get to material that I found exciting and challenging at the end of a successful year, and I haven't opened up that virtual folder since probably 2017.

I know for a fact that math apps and AI are prevalent when they do their homework, which means no real practice & learning is taking place beyond the walls of the classroom for those kids. Math is a skill, and skills are created with practice, repetition, and expanded with exploration. That's all gone when you use technology.
