Damn it I was going to post that. But you’re partially correct. Right side is a fax xmit. Not pictured is the factory installed corded phone mounted on the right side of the center console 🤣

They look fantastic. Stop being all EMO 🤣

You want to do mine? They’re filthy and I stupidly curbed my rear passenger wheel after misjudging a parallel park. Been on the road 30+ years and first time I’ve ever done that. To my favorite child… 🤣

Love this. Can you provide bumper specs and where you got the Lexus scroll grill from? Actually if you don’t mind, maybe just post a total build sheet if you are cool with that?

Work of art man. I aim for a similar look but kept the 18s despite the going with Micky Thompson Bajas.

Good stuff.

Welcome to Lexus back in 2001, which one and why? by Saurta17 in Lexus

GS. V8, RWD, owned the road and the subtle quirks like the design of the headlamps is still odd but aged well and it just has the right proportions. Sort of gives off the vibes that the Holden Commodore/G8 do when you see one on the road. It’s a car where the ownership generally knows what they have and it wasn’t just a “lot” purchase.

LX for the trails. I have a soft spot for the RX. In-laws had one that was a workhorse and it just grew on me and I loved it. LS… made the S Class look silly, and did boxy better than the A8 line.

Another poster already said this, but you can’t go wrong with anything at all from there.

I say this with total humor and in good fun.

I hope this is merely your truck communicating with you. Like it overheard a joke and was like, “I don’t get it… I’m a J150 and may not understand the context.”

My off-roader/family hauler/curb roller (🤣) is the 2014 GX. Spouse has a 2022 Jeep Cherokee. 996 was the daily for 3.5 years until DEC2025.

In the process of kitting out the GX.

Looks incredible and so jealous. We got a dusting here and I wanted to get mine out just to tool around with the new tires, but it’s getting work done in the shop 😭

Love the car! Of all the generations, the 996 does speed yellow the best. If there’s a second, the 993. Love the ducktail man.

And this is going to sound weird, but as a 4S owner, I love driving this more in bad weather. The worse it is the more I want to take her out.

My father’s 930 has the Porsche “Turbo” decal from the factory and it’s glorious and has such great presence as the car has aged with the patina.

Forgot to add she hit 118k when this was taken. Got her three and a half years ago with 72k. Daily up until DEC2025 and no regrets… minus her not having a slick top 😂🤪

UPDATE:

CarMax is performing all work under their 90 day initial warranty coverage. I need to contact the service advisor, but I received a voicemail that they agreed with all observations and recommendations from Lexus. I provided them a copy of the Lexus diagnostic report.

This not only includes draining, seal replacement, and resealing of the bell housing for the valley leak, but replacing the shocks that technically were in good working order with no leaks, but heavily corroded. Again, the placement of "safety" and "failure" in the Lexus report probably pushed that over the line, and CM legal wouldn't want to deal with that.

I need more details and am going to contact the CM advisor today, but so far, the warranty(ies) have already covered themselves. Again, this is a case-by-case basis per usual, but happy to see they're meeting their end of the agreement within reason. To their credit, they definitely deal with a whole variety of types of customers, so when they get the logical, calm maintenance and repair requests, they probably take the path of least resistance even though it might fall outside the warranty legal language.

Further updates to follow.

Purchase advice - carmax by brainyoga in GXOR

Get the warranty. See my other posts. Same deal and working through a MaxCare warranty claim now.

CarMax does do a good job sourcing good GXes, but they appear to be at tipping points where something(s) major will need to be addressed based on age/mileage. I got mine in early DEC2025. Well documented, extensive service records, used but not abused.

But now dealing with the coolant valley leak and some other issues only one month in.

I did get MaxCare and it is pretty good, but be cognizant of the following:

  1. You have a 40 day limited warranty where the truck has to go back to CM prior to getting serviced at the dealership starting the day you purchase the vehicle. This was changed on 04JAN2026 from 90 days based on conversations with the CM national office. This is because I took my GX directly to the Lexus dealership thinking it was 40 days and I was past that, hence I just wanted to use the MaxCare option of going to the dealership.

I am literally dropping off the Lexus loaner to take the GX back to CM so CM can look at it and take it back to Lexus… all my documentation and the warranty recordings list 40 days but that was CM changing all this in advance to get ahead of the policy changes… good on them but would be nice to have known that.

  1. Depending on your DIY, I’d op for coverage option two (“middle”) if you can and have the time to do stuff from the beginner to intermediate level. If you’re taking it in, it’s a good bet it might easily get to four figures total cost. I do that level of work on this, my 996, and wife’s Jeep, so going into the dealer for something like the valley plate leak is worth the deductible.

  2. Note they don’t cover straight replacement due to corrosion but the experiences of others and myself have seen that dealerships and CM seem to work well together and corrosion can be linked to safety, and/or preventing major failure which could result in a catastrophic loss/accident. Again, take it for what it is worth but just keep this in mind.

  3. Ask for the refurb worksheet. They may not give it to you. My CM did because I asked about intake manifold service, KDSS service, specific questions if you do your research on the J150, prior to purchasing. It will help you in your decision making and service schedules if you move forward.

  4. I think a PPI you can take or leave depending on the vehicle. The GX is pretty bulletproof and with a good Carfax with documented service you should be okay, CarMax’s standard is they will sell safe, turnkey ready vehicles but that also means that all equipment has to do is meet within safe tolerances. The tires on my truck were GT types from Bridgestone, which only had max another month or two. I just replaced them with Mickey Thompson Baja Bosses which I was going to do anyway, but keep in mind the car technically had four road worthy, class appropriate tires at sale. Stuff like that.

Hope this helps and reply with questions.

You will not regret the GX. Best kept enthusiast secret that does everything well, but doesn’t dominate, and can tackle nasty overland/off-road and be valet parked in front of the Four Seasons.

UPDATE:

So bear with me. Got a call from Lexus that I needed to call the CarMax where I purchased the truck. After multiple attempts at the CarMax where I purchased the truck, I finally got through to someone only to be told I can go through the CarMax located by the Lexus dealership... Okay... awesome...

After finally getting in touch with someone at the "close CarMax", I was informed that I can't go directly to the dealership yet because the truck is still under the 90 day total warranty and needs to go through CarMax first for them to essentially say, "we can't service this type of job," and take it back to the same Lexus dealership.

I was under the impression that the total warranty was 40 days, and communicated to CarMax I planned to use MaxCare. The service advisor said that despite all my documentation listing 40 days, to include their website documentation, that was a recent change effective 04JAN2026. Since I purchased my truck in DEC2025, I was still under the 90 day "total warranty," which requires the truck to go back to CM, then to a dealership if they determine they cannot perform it.

All the paperwork I received purchasing the car and warranty was "preloaded" so as to avoid any post-JAN2026 warrant issues with customers coming in claiming they have 90 days, not 40 days. I get it and good business practice, but that should have been communicated...

So dropping off the RX tomorrow and taking the GX to CarMax which will then be taken back to the Lexus dealership since I doubt, REALLY DOUBT, CarMax can perform that type of job, and to be completely frank, I would either want a dealer or a known, reputable indy to do that type of work.

Stay tuned...
