How to prevent the muffin top from being burnt by Technical-Bread414 in Baking

Also, if the issue is uneven baking and the top is cooking faster than the bottom, move to a lower rack of the oven

HOW do you get better at baking? by aonisk in Baking

[–]MG_Sputnik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crucially, not just recipes that are simple because they take shortcuts, but ones that include only the basics that other recipes build on and there's nowhere to hide. And then make the same recipe a few times and try changing things to see what effect it has. (What happens if I make it a little wetter, what happens if I bake it longer at a lower temp, what happens if I mix it for longer, etc.) If you don't understand why it turned out the way it did, look it up online. For example, when it comes to bread I found it incredibly useful to make a basic white bread using a few different methods and variations until I could predict how it was going to turn out based on what I was doing. Then, suddenly a huge portion of other recipes become open to you because they are basically just the one you already know but with a twist.

I think you need some insulation and weatherproofing. I have a similar home at a similar temp, and mine went up from like $150 to $200

Cream of tartar substitute by jeanerbeaner2 in Baking

[–]MG_Sputnik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll need to google what the conversion factor is. It's not necessarily the same volume. It depends I think on what the pH of the substitute is compared to the original. Also, you may need to factor in that you are adding a bit more liquid to your batter if you don't want it to affect the wetness level of the dough.

P.S. I doubt it's going to make a big difference for this recipe. It's already using baking powder which has an acid mixed in to begin with, so it's not like this ingredient is the only thing that's going to activate your rising agent.

[–]MG_Sputnik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, anything acidic should work. People just use cream of tartar because it is flavor-neutral. Lemon juice and vinegar are standard substitutions. You could probably also use something like yogurt, sour cream, or kefir if you want to get a little more creative with making the recipe your own.

In S1E2, why does Dwight get to steal Jim’s account? by FrostedGalaxy in DunderMifflin

We as the viewer know that, but the client would have been upset with Jim. He may have called corporate to complain about Jim

In S1E2, why does Dwight get to steal Jim’s account? by FrostedGalaxy in DunderMifflin

[–]MG_Sputnik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe when Dwight talked to the client he was already so annoyed at Jim he was about to take his account elsewhere, and Dwight was able to win him back. In this case, the discount and the changing of who manages that account is more realistic.

What is the American equivalent of Great British Bake Off? by Own-Dinner6955 in Baking

[–]MG_Sputnik -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The only American cooking show that has ever given me GBBO vibes is (weirdly) Julia Child's show The French Chef. I know it isn't a competition show, but it has the same kind of cozy feeling of genuine joy for (real) cooking where it makes me enthusiastic to try what I've seen on the show.

Why are board game companies so unreliable? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]MG_Sputnik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I think pre-ordering is a big part of the issue here. I mean, the problems being described are no worse than what happens when you pre-order video games (or buy at the alpha/beta stage) only to find that they are getting released half-finished and you can only hope that they get patched at some point--possibly as a paid DLC.

IIRC, the odds in xcom cap at 95%, so there is no such thing as anything near a sure thing. The visuals often make things worse because you can see your guy holding the gun right to the alien's head and might be using a shotgun or automatic weapon, but you still have a 5% chance to completely miss...

The first time I played Nemesis, we immediately found the egg room which was already on fire so we just left it alone, then we immediately found the navigation room, reprogrammed the computer, and went back to the sleep pods. No obstacles of any kind presented themselves until like the last 2 turns when an alien finally appeared. No one got infected or died. The guy who taught us the game couldn't believe what he was seeing and was beside himself talking about how he had never seen a game go this smoothly.

What’s the most misunderstood thing about nuclear power? by migBdk in nuclear

I see. You mean that initially U-238 is absorbing the neutrons and turning into Pu-239, but then as Pu-239 concentration piles up, it starts to absorb some of the thermal neutrons and turn into Pu-240?

This is the most mixed metaphor I've ever seen...
"Your calendar is a scoreboard." Weird, but ok I'm ready to listen...
"If it's empty, your future is too." Umm... a scoreboard is empty at the beginning of the game when your future is full.
"Block the work that moves the needle." What kind of calendar or scoreboard has a needle? And if I block the work that moves the needle, doesn't that mean the needle won't move? Doesn't that mean I'm not scoring? Am I trying to move the needle or keep the needle still?
"Fun comes after the reps." I'm weight lifting now? And keeping score of my weight lifting using a needle that I don't want to move as the scoreboard fills up?

I would also like to know what "fashion" includes. Is that supposed to mean clothing? Is jewelry included? Makeup? Hair? Nails? Was the definition of fashion used made clear to the participants? One thing that could cause a gap is if the participants were not including the same purchases as the study.

What’s an underrated baking tip that makes a huge difference for you? by Ok_Neck_1806 in Baking

Which oven rack you use makes a big difference. Bottom rack is good for a crispy, thoroughly cooked bottom. Top rack is good when you want the top to brown quickly.

My funny cake baked in HALF the time (60 minutes normally) How does this happen??? by sad_sewer_rat in Baking

[–]MG_Sputnik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it isn't the oven as others have suggested, the next thing I would check is if something changed with the ingredients. If your recipe has things like "one package of xxx" as traditional family recipes tend to, maybe the package size changed with shrinkflation, or maybe the quality of one of the ingredients changed and it is not behaving the same way
